Thanks again. Now I know why my current i3 struggles as it is a U series. I have coughed up money to buy the MSI G 63 laptop. No other brand comes anywhere within my budget. The models I am working on have specific minimum requirement - Intel i7 (they didn't specify the generation so I went with i7 11800H and RTX 3050 and the manufacturer claims it shares the RAM with available system memory.

I have to upgrade the memory to 64 GB from 16 GB and add 1 TB SSD for the intended task.
Thanks for all the suggestions and explaining the Chip architecture.

Thanks Aroy. I always knew this - "all are equal but some are more equal than others" Thanks to George Orwell. What I didn't know is this is applicable even to CPUs until now. Background voice " I am getting old - still stuck in Pentium days with 64 MB RAM and 1 GB drives".

My development server is an aging AMD with just 2 GB RAM for over a decade. Even the OS is an outdated Centos 6.9 - but it is still happy chugging along.

Thanks again.

This is not possible for Deep Learning. The way GPU accesses main (Motherboard) memory is completely different from GPU memory.

This marketing gimmic applies to games and some other usecases not for DL (like lLM) since it does need whole model + minibatch to be loaded in GPU memory at the same time.

Not to dampen your spirits or anything, but MSI service is very bad in India. You can check on Reddit. While there are negative reports about each and every brand, none come close to MSI. Just something which you may wanna keep in mind. Also, if I am not wrong, the model which you have chosen comes with a 40W 3050 so the GPU performance is gonna be quite average.

You may use this website to figure out more options-

It is too late anyway. But truth be said , I have heard some good reviews as well in India. I know it is difficult to expect the longevity of Apple devices with MSI. At the first run, it is not so bad. Only thing is it is heating up pretty fast.

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

Was looking for a replacement for my Dell Inspiron Touchscreen laptop, and took a fancy towards OLED displays as screen reviews were good. Ordered the Vivobook S3402ZA, i5 12500H processor which is quite powerful. Went with 2 years International Extended warranty and 3 years accident protection.

Long story short, within a month had to replace the motherboard due to screen freezing issues. Asus service was really good, onsite replacement and follow up. Coming to the laptop- It's on Flipkart for 75k now, and was available for as low as 59k couple of weeks back. Great 2.8K screen, 4+ hours battery backup, comfortable keyboard. Good webcam with Motion Tracking, and AI noise cancellation. Fingerprint reader is a little iffy at times. Overall a good package for this price. With the 3 years warranty in place, peace of mind!

Need Help! : Seeking Leads on DDR5 5600Mhz Laptop RAM

Hello Forum Members,

I am currently in search of a DDR5 5600Mhz laptop RAM.
I'm posting this due to the fact that I can't seem to find it anywhere in Mumbai ( searched shops on Lamington Road, but they only had 4800Mhz RAM available).
I have extensively searched both online marketplaces and physical stores, but to no avail. If any of you have any leads, suggestions, or recommendations on where I might be able to procure this particular RAM, I would be immensely grateful.

Please feel free to reply here or send me a private message if you have any information that could be helpful.

Thank you in advance for your time and support.

Re: The Laptop Thread: Configs, deals & questions

Guys, please suggest a powerful laptop that'll be used to run Team-BHP . My 2018 Dell Latitude 7490 is choking under the current workloads.

Requirements:

- Horsepower for heavy multitasking. When I am choosing the hot threads or going through "Reported Posts", I usually have 120 - 150 tabs in Chrome open. Other than the 100+ Chrome tabs, I also have Spotify / iTunes playing. And keep opening / closing a few other programs for accounting, MS Office etc.

But 90% of work time is spent on Chrome which always has 100 - 150 tabs open in different windows (for different purposes).

- Reliability

- Great after-sales service & long warranties (my Dell had a 5-year warranty). If my laptop needs repairs, I need the company to quickly fix it. Onsite preferred, although offsite is okay if it doesn't take them too long.

- Other than power, reliability & after-sales, I am not fussy about stuff. Am open to screen sizes, battery life etc.

- Would have bought the Macbook M1 / M2, but I absolutely need Windows. It's a non-negotiable. No time to set up the new computer, so I will be cloning my current Windows 10 hard-drive (with files & programs) to the new computer.

- The laptop spends a lot of time on my desk, plugged into a big monitor + Apple keyboard + mouse. But I do take it out to another room while working too.

Guessing the upcoming BBD sales on Amazon & Flipkart will be a good time to buy? Or should I buy direct from the brand for the 5+ year warranty requirements?

Thanks in advance!

This is the laptop for you:

Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 Laptop, 12th Gen Intel i7-1260P (12 Cores), 14.0" FHD (1920 x 1200) IPS Anti-Glare, 24GB DDR4, 1TB SSD, Fingerprint Reader, 1080P Camera, 2.91 lbs, Win 11 Pro - Black https://amzn.eu/d/erBYaSO

It's the Toyota of laptops. Built like a tank. Solid, reliable and powerful. Battery life is really great for an intel powered machine. Has the specs to justify the price and most importantly runs cool for longer service life. Boring looks is the only trade-off. I would recommend getting the 13th gen version though, not available on amazon but on Lenovo's website configurator. You can also get extended warranty and customize it to suit your needs to the T on their website. Expensive lenovos are generally much better than similarly priced HPs and Dells. I don't trust brands like Asus, etc for work purposes.

What's the configuration on the laptop? Perhaps you can consider upgrading the RAM and hard-drive? Unless the laptop has an i3 or i5 processor, upgrading the RAM especially (to say, 32 GB) should bring about noticeable changes. If it has an i3/i5, then a new laptop with i7 processor, 1 TB SSD and 32 GB RAM should do the trick.

Here's the shortlist.

+1 to this. I have a company issued T14 which I use 24x7 5 days a week. It does heat sometimes, but a simple raised metal stand which allows air to freely flow under the laptop has solved the heating problem. I have no other complaints. The laptop is built like a tank.

BTW, if you are planning to get that ThinkPad, I suggest you purchase it directly from Lenovo. They offer customisation services on most of their offerings. You can build a laptop you want with all the options - including what kind of warranty you want. However, most Think series laptops are routinely out of stock in the official online Lenovo store, which is a bummer! When they do have stock, the shipping speeds are nothing to brag about either.

I purchased a ThinkCentre M70q Gen 3 last year via this route. The configuration I chose ended up being substantially cheaper when compared to what was available online. Most importantly, I ended up getting a 12th gen processor which was not available on other e-com websites/offline at that time. It took them 4 whole weeks to customise it and then ship it to my location (from their factory in China to Lenovo office/warehouse in Mumbai and then forwarded to me), but the machine was fresh off the factory floor!

Of course there is banking partner and exchange discount (unless you have an old laptop to exchange) which are not direct discounts offered by Amazon.

Cheers,

Hey GTO

I have been a heavy to very heavy user of laptops for most part of my life. For the last 30 years it has been Dell for me (various models). I also have a MacBook pro M2 processor (which is very very good and you can really get a lot of work, throw many things at it and it is totally unfazed - above all you don't need a cooling pad. Another advantage - you could later get an ipad or iphone and it all works together seamlessly.

However, it can take up to 4-5 months of transition and getting used to Apple environment. That said, since you are absolutely wanting Windows, here are some suggestions on the Windows PCs -

Dell XPS 13 – this particular model has the usual i7 but comes with a 32 GB RAM. HDD can be external for as much storage anyway.

https://www.dell.com/en-in/shop/lapt...cc-c786508win8

Dell XPS 17 – This particular model (not very movement friendly) but a powerhouse of a performance has Core i9 plus 32 GB RAM (two slots of 16 GB Ram each) plus Nvidia GeForce 8 GB. Absolute powerhouse of a performance. (take a cooling pad with it)

https://www.dell.com/en-in/work/shop...300ucfg002css1

Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 3 Laptop, 12th Gen Intel i7-1260P (12 Cores), 14.0" FHD (1920 x 1200) IPS Anti-Glare, 24GB DDR4, 1TB SSD (take a cooling pad with it)

https://www.amazon.in/dp/B0B4M4K86Q?...21650JSC62202P

HP Spectre x360 13th Gen Intel Evo Core i7-1360P 16 inch(40.6cm)UHD+OLED 500 nits Gorilla Glass Touch 2-in-1 Laptop(32GB RAM/1TB SSD/5MP(IR)Camera – better cooling than Dell – but will still a cooling pad

https://www.amazon.in/HP-Spectre-i7-...C1CLMLWX&psc=1

You can also look at a powerful Dell PC Desktop - the upgrade to a more powerful processing unit or a different monitor is always possible. Cooling is not an issue and support is anyway there. I suggest Optiplex and Vostro. You can have a Dell XPS as the more mobile and business friendly version.

Hopefully this helps.

Cheers
Rajain

I would recommend the Dell XPS 15/17. They are literally the Windows equivalent of a Macbook! (I might be slightly biased because I'm currently typing out this response on a XPS 15) The laptop is pricy but makes up for it in terms of it's build quality and features. You can upgrade the RAM and storage as well something several laptops as missing out on. But do note you might need a USB Type-C Dongle if you want to connect several devices into your laptop. The one that comes with the laptop only has 1 USB Type-A Port and 1 HDMI Port.
