Navin, Thanks! I just found a thread in ICE about HT systems. Will go through it completely first and then rephrase my questions. (I thought ICE is for in car entertainment and not for home, silly me! )

Update : I did go through that Home theater thread, but just didn't understand anything All, I see there, are funny names, acronyms and some strange fractional numbers such as 2.1, 7.1 and crazy RMS values (alright, I know RMS). I guess, I should suspend my purchase till I understand these things better Or alternatively, catch a guru, give him a budget and buy his choice.

I know exactly how you feel! Remember when you speak to an expert the budget is what HE determines, not what YOU specify.

All the best!

i just read abt 9.1

2.1 : front left & front right and a subwoofer

4.1 : front left & front right ; rear left & rear right and a subwoofer

5.1 : front left & front right ; rear left & rear right ; frnt centre speaker and a subwoofer

6.1 :: front left & front right ; rear left & rear right ; frnt centre speaker, rear centre speaker and a subwoofer

rms: root mean square.

buy a set based on its rms value , NOT pmpo.

Navin,
may be we need a home audio 101 thread too.

RX,
all most all the audio system available will go with any TV. So what TV your are going to buy has got nothing to do with the audio purchase.

For your budget, get a desirable TV first and for rest of the amount, streach a bit, 10 or 25k, and get a HT systems from sony, panasonic or such. They should be min 5.1. They should come with a DVD player too.

What ever forum you are referring too, give the link, i guess is too much for your budget.

gkrishn,

Here is The Home theater link in ICE which I was talking about. Budget will not be a major constraint, but then I am not a serious audiophille and pretty much novice when it comes to these things. In nutshell, I don't want to spend 40K on something, if I can't differentiate between a 10K system and 40K system.

Right now, I am reading "home theater for dummies" Alright, here is the link to get basics right.

I am planning to buy this kind of over head projectors one day...just for watching DVDs.
How much did they cost you? also heard that the biggest draw back is the life time of the bulb used... (thats the reason i told just of DVDs).

Hey, I just said I noted the point, no more no less.

Any way, I realized couple of hours ago that I should have known a few things about audio *before* shooting my mouth here. So going to read myself a bit before I ask questions.

Have the following at home:

1)Panasonic two in one driven by laptop.
2)Philips receiver and stereo speakers(1978 model with turntable)
3)Sansui midi hi fi
4)Philips AW 606 mini hi fi
5)Sony DVD player(DVP NS 575P)
6)Samsung 29" Flat TV.
Except the laptop,DVD player and TV,planning to dispose off all of the above and on the verge of buying:

1)Sony STR DE 597 A/V receiver(6.1 channel).(MRP 16990/-)
2)Sony 3 way 4 speaker SS-MF650H.(MRP 9990/-)
3)Bose acoustimass 5 series III speaker system(MRP 21990/-)
4)Bose acoustimass VCS- 10 centre speakers.(MRP 9990/-)

Can anyone suggest if this set up is good within a budget of 50K.Are Bose speakers good considering their reputation? Is Denon receiver better than Sony?
Replies awaited...Thanks

A few days gone by and I am still as clueless as I was when I started off. I got educated vee bit more, but going by this pace, I can make purchase only in another year or two.

If only I can meet an audio guru, who doesn't drill hole in my pocket before I speak out "H" in "Home theater". Rudra/Navin, are you listening, gentlemen?

Quote:
Ok 1st we need a budget. As someone else said this can be a bottomless pit so give us your best budget. Then we need you need. % of audio onlyuse, % of Home theater use. Type of music. Type of Video programs and lastly we need you decor considerations which we mysoginists over on the ICE forum call WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor).
Let me try to answer:
1) I don't know what is correct budget for a casual listener like me. 20K-30K excluding TV set? I don't need a purist profession audio but a good one for regular home usage. I hate unnecessary excessive bass (so audible in "V-groove"d Sony boxes).
2) I have not special choices for music. I can digest anything that is audible, but prefer soft music than heavy metal.
3) 35-65 usage in audio and video.
4) WAF : Not an issue as long as she likes whatever she hears and sees. But, then no sane married man on this earth can guarantee anything :-)

I visited Sony World and checked out Sony 5.1 HTIB at 15K and same system with 3 CD changer at 21K. I am also planning to buy 29" Wega. How good is that?

P.S.: Mods, can you move this thread to ICE?
