About the Galaxy S :

1) Is it available in Mumbai yet?
2) How much longer will i have to wait for the 2.2 upgrade (given that it runs Samsung's custom UI)
3) Is it easily possible to install the "plain" android OS on these phones which come preinstalled with their custom "sense UI" et al?

Thanks,
R

PS - Is there any currently available phone thats a competitor to the Galaxy S, in terms of screen size and specs?

I think the Galaxy S is available everywhere now. The quoted price is around 31K.
Samsung has promised an update to Froyo by the end of Q3 i think .
HTC Evo is a good phone comparable to the Galaxy S ( it has a 4.3" screen ). However, Samsung is the only manufacturer of Super AMOLED screens and they are not able to supply these to HTC and other companies. So with respect to the screen, there is no competitor to the Galaxy S for now.

Yes it is (<30k). There have also been a few well priced ones on TBHP Classifieds in the past few months.

Hmm... so hopefully by the end of the year.
However, with Samsungs bada-os, i wonder how dedicated the Android support will be... Probably not worth worrying about though.

Looking for a top end android phone, which is the best among these?
Google nexus one
HTC desire
Samsung I9000 GS?

Preferences would be No Hangings!, Web browsing,UI, Maps and other apps, Camera in the order. Please suggest.

Also would it be worthwhile to go in for maemo N900 or wait for Symbiam 3^ Nokia N8

I think Galaxy S is better than both the Nexus and Desire, especially with that Super AMOLED screen.

Android 3.0 Leaked. They're Calling It Gingerbread

Android 3.0 Leaked. They're Calling It Gingerbread > News on Smart Mobile > Tech2.com India

This is from tech2 site:

Android 3.0 aka Gingerbread was slated to release in Q4 of 2010 and already some features have been released. Firstly, this new sweet treat is catered to tablets and supports 1280x760 resolution and minimum specs of 1 GHz. Other features are:
  • Android 3.0 Gingerbread will be released in mid- October (around 15 -16th), 2010. First handsets shipping closer to Christmas time.
  • Minimum hardware requirements for Android 3.0 devices are: 1GHZ CPU, 512MB or RAM, displays from 3.5” and higher.
  • New 1280×760 resolution available for the devices with displays of 4” and higher.
  • Completely revamped user interface.
  • Android’s split into 2 branches becomes official. 3.0 for top of the line/high end devices. Cheap, low-end mass market handsets will keep Android 2.1/2.2
This spill comes from movile-review.com's Eldar Murtazin but there is nothing on his blog or his main site. He basically revealed all on his podcast, Digestiv where he speaks in Russian.

I'm in the same position.

The i9000 (Galaxy S) beats the former 2 when it comes to screen size (4" vs 3.7").

Also, the mutli-touch is WAY better on the Galaxy S compared to the nexus one. I saw a video somewhere but can't find it. It was similar to this :

One advantage of the Nexus One -- will get Android v2.2 before most of the other android phones. Though this doesn't bother me too much.

As for reliability etc -- no idea!!!

I LOVED the n900 as a piece of hardware, unfortunately the maemo os has a long way to go, especially if you're the kind of person who wants apps!

Not sure about other differentiators.

Compared to the 800x480+ resolutions of the top-end phones.

Isn't there an up to date site which gives a nice side-by-side spec comparison of all the android phones!?@

To make things worse -- the Droid X is on the verge of being launched!!
4.3" screen, not sure what else differentiates it? Maybe QWERTY?

PS - Apparently the 16GB Samsung Galaxy S is on sale for 29,000/- or less in Mumbai. Just checked yesterday.

The HTC Desire is another phone to watch out for. However for the power hungry the Galaxy's ARM Cortex A8 chip aka 'Hummingbird' should be more than satisfactory. It supposedly can process about 90 million triangle per sec, about 3 times more than the Apple 3GS processor.

There are rumours of a HTC Scorpion in the near future with a 1.5Ghz processor.
