hi,

I have been crossing my fingers over whether to buy an LCD or a Plasma TV or go for a Projector. I already have the following setup at home :


Living Room -- Size 11*14 , Viewing Distance 10feet.
1. LG 21" Flat TV
2. Pioneer HTP-2500 1000W 5.1 home theater system
3. HP Laptop and 2 500GB Lacie External HDD
4. Nintendo Game cube ( connected to TV and ht above)
( additional features -- 2 kids -- extremely naughty)
I wanted to replace the LG TV with an LCD or Plasma or a projector.

I had my eyes set on 2 options:
1. Sharp Aquos 32" LCD tv
2. BenQ W100 DLP Video projector

I talked to BenQ today morning and they discouraged me from the video DLP after knowing the above setup and have suggested the BenQ MP511+

so my question is -- with the above setup what is a better bet -- going for a data projector or waiting for a right time and upgrade to a Sharp LCD.
The primary usage will be watching movies (my wife's crib is that i don't take her to movies often) ,sports (if kids permit ) and gaming.

So guide me . I do not want to waste any money and set it up in such a way that has minimum wastage of all the setup allready present.

Their recommendation is ridiculous. They are suggesting a business projector for your home theatre use. That too it is a 800x600 projector, a relic.

Look for a projector whose primary purpose is for home theatre. The business projectors are not optimised for moving images.

Are there any other DLP projectors that i can consider -- looking back I think Benq doesnt know what to recommend to whom , I am thinking of other providers -- can you suggest any ?

thanks for the quick response Samurai -- they suggested the W100 home projector for a price of 60K incl of taxes and installation. Is that a fair deal ?

I don't want to suggest merely looking at the specs sheet. It is a 16:9 projector, that is good, but the lumens are low. You should decide only after a live demo.

BTW, I finally settled for a 50" plasma in 2006 since I found dark room viewing to be a problem.

most projectors will need a dark room or semi dark room for a proper contrast on the screen. however the latest DLP projectors for home theater use are just amazing. I recently saw a demo of a 1080 P infocus X10 projector. I am planning a dedicated HT room after seeing the demo. Its simply mindblowing and i scrapped my plans to buy a LCD. Now imagine something like this ...

Given that your choice is between a Flat Panel TV and a Projector please be aware of the following.



A Projector cannot substitute a TV.


When it comes to daily viewing of serials, news & regular channels, the convenience of watching these on a TV is just not present in a projector. You can be partially carrying on which your daily chores, kids playing about, have your snack/dinner all while watching TV at the same time.

With a projector this is not possible. You have to have a semi darkened room and totally concentrate on what is beamed by the projector.

However when watching movies the experience that a project can offer is far superior to one got watching it on a TV (provided you get a 720p or higher model). So their applications are slightly different.


After analyzing these facts once you have made your decision as to whether it’s a Projector that you want, go ahead researching the Projector market.

thats exactly has been my confusion. I do not want to disturb the existing setup and have kids watch their daily dose of cartoons or any soap operas on the regular flat tv, however during watching movies, i personally want to immerse in the experience of watching it and hence need the projector. Thanks for the links. I want to make a conscious decision that i do not regret later and hence am very skeptical before committing to a lcd\plasma tv or a projector.
