Me thinks the 3 litre will stay and go further downmarket to take on the Scorpio while the new 2.2 will take the pricepoint earlier occupied by the 3.

It will be very confusing to the end consumer if they do so, but then 3 litre sales would shoot up if the 2.2 is positioned upmarket and there is nothing to distinguish the two visually.

May be they'll put the 2.2L in only the VX trim and in the new midsize soft roader they're planning on? This would mean the original TCIC would get relegated to only the SUMO line. I would speculate that the new 2.2L will cost AT LEAST Rs.50K more than the current 3L.

I think it would be a mistake for TATA to not introduce the 2.2L in India now. Although there are quality issues, the Safari is the best 4x4 IMO in the overall sense (VFM etc). I don't think there are any inherent cost advantages to producing the 3L engine since its more of an adhoc DICOR. Are there other applications of this 3L engine (Dicor or non) reducing its cost which would make TATA not to introduce the 2.2L in India?

The 3 litre Dicor is derived from the 407. No reason why it shouldnt go into the 407, Spacio and the TL dual cab - in fact its already inside the crew cab for export markets.

If we look at the cost of production, a 2.2 Liter engine in all Muv, SuV from tata which means Sumo, Spacio, TL, Safari, X2 would mean high volumes and much lower cost for Tata. That makes more sense, though personally I am not really in favor of 140bhp call center cabs

Yes but its an engine that costs more to start with - technical fees paid to AVL, Aluminium in place of cast iron, 16 valves in place of the 2 valve pushrod, probably more expensive Common Rail injectors from Bosch instead of Delphi, more complex engine management, etc.

Makes more sense to use their in-house, low-cost 3 litre engine for common applications.

Plus, for load-bearing applications I'm sure there is nothing to beat the 407 engine. It just goes on and on and on.

Probably uses a VGT type turbo as well. 16v means DOHC which also adds cost.

16 valves do not necessarily translate into DOHC. Cars like the Baleno and Esteem have 16 valves but SOHC.

However, I'm not suggesting that the new Tata engine isn't DOHC. It probably is.

Cheers!

Well, About the positioning of 2.2 and 3.0 l engines, Suddenly it occured to me that Godfather may be right, it all makes sense. TATA can use the 2.2 L engine to power lower end safari, which can compete almost directly with the scorpio. Effectively killing all the advantage the scorpio has over the current 3.0 L engine. These just may work. Maybe I am wrong, but there is always a possibility.

You are right as far as petrols. But for any modern diesel you need to have a central vertical injector that works with the bowl type piston and for that you need DOHC.

Tata Safari in Italy

If you see this forum (in italian), the Tata discussion is much longer than most other brands, almost same as Toyota!. Either the Italians like it so much or they hate it so much to merit so many threads/messages...wish it was all in English

Autocar says June 2007 will be the launch date in India, though europe will get this beast in January to meet Euro IV norms.
