Now, separate figures are available for Tour, but new DZire numbers are now clubbed with sub-4m hatches as per SIAM classification.

BTW, just 1328 Tours? I thought the Tour numbers would be higher than this.

New Delhi, September 1, 2014: Honda Cars India Ltd. (HCIL), leading manufacturer of premium cars in India, registered monthly domestic sales of 16,758 units in August 2014 witnessing a growth of 88%. The company sold 8,913 units in the corresponding month last year.

The tremendous growth for the month has been achieved owing to strong sales momentum for the family sedan Honda Amaze and tremendous response for the newly launched stylish 7 seater MPV Honda Mobilio.

HCIL registered an overall growth of 49% during the period April – August 2014 with 73,185 units as against 49,263 units during the corresponding period last year.

Expressing delight at the company’s performance Mr. Jnaneswar Sen, Sr. Vice President – Marketing & Sales, Honda Cars India Ltd. said, "We are extremely happy to witness consistent growth for Honda cars month after month. The festive season has already set-in and will bring further cheer to the market. We are geared up for strong sales in coming months."

HCIL will resume the production of its best seller Honda City from 1st week of September 2014 and the car will now be manufactured at the Tapukara plant in Rajasthan. Re: July 2014 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

A couple of observations:

1) MSIL has now become the No. 1 in terms of utility vehicle (UV + MUV + SUV + MPV + small passenger van) sales, in addition to being the market leader in terms of cars (as well as passenger vehicles as a whole).

With 15,481 utility vehicles (5,491 + 9,990) alone sold last month, they are comfortably ahead of the former leader in the UV space, Mahindra, whose total sales was 14,140 units (and this includes the cars Verito & Vibe) last month.

This is no mean feat!

2) With 5,530 units moved to dealers last month, the Honda Mobilio is slightly ahead of its direct rival Maruti Suzuki Ertiga (<= 5,491 units) in its second month of being on sale. Whether it's only an initial euphoria or a permanent occurrence, only time will tell.

Amaze has really caught the fancy of the Indian consumer - 9K+ units already and that should make it to the top 5

Re: July 2014 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Honda has major production challenges and this month shows that clearly. They beat the Ertiga because it was prioritized it over city, and Amaze too is clocking big numbers.

If they could get the second plant into full swing they could easily clock 20K+.

Hyundai overall sales are down by 8 percent, thanks to declining exports. Domestic sales are up by 19.2 percent YOY, but exports declined by 40.2 percent.

True! Hyundai's export numbers have been steadily coming down after Hyundai's India plant was replaced by their Turkey one as the small car supplier for EU markets. It's fast approaching the point where Hyundai may be replaced by Nissan as the country's top passenger car exporter.

I think it may be both a forced strategy, and a deliberate decision. Forced strategy because of successive Indian governments' refusal to cut import duties on high end cars coming from the EU. This has made the EU retaliate by raising import duties on small cars exported from India. Deliberate decision because of Hyundai utilising the shift in export base to free up capacity for the domestic market.

HMIL says the Indian plant will now become the small car export base for markets in South-East Asia, Middle-East, Australia etc. I really hope Hyundai India exports cars to Australia & New Zealand in large numbers. This would mean the Indian versions of those cars would get plenty of safety features, at least as options. The Aussie & Kiwi markets use the ANCAP program as a safety benchmark, and this is the exact equivalent of Euro-NCAP. This would mean the Indian versions of those cars would have the same safety features, at least as options - just like the previous i20 had class leading safety features like 6 airbags & rear disc brakes, because the Indian plant was the export base for Europe.

They had to restrict production of the City for the newly launched Mobilio due to limited production capacity.

All the figures given in the monthly sales thread are the dispatches from the factory to dealers and NOT actual sales.

Mobilio effect. Priority given to Mobilio hence lower figures.

Re: July 2014 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

They are shifting the City production from Gurgaon to Rajasthan plant and hence there was no production in August (they had put up a circular/notice on their site as well). Production was to start from rajasthan in september. 7xx number may be July production dispatched in August.

Fiat-Aug nos

Linea: 139
Punto Evo:985

New Linea is turning out to be a complete disaster, heard discounts have already started.

Punto Evo nos looks better by Fiat's standard, should improve further once Avventura is launched.
