I agree. Many people here have been talking of Harrier/Rexton being as good if not better than their competition and that these should be priced according to the product and not brand.

Unfortunately that does not happen here. Even Maruti which controls the market had to reduce price to sell S-Cross when they charged premium and finally went with Nexa to launch premium products. Even after this they are yet to charge premium pricing. And that too when they have better QM processes than Tata and Mahindra.

Case in point, a couple of my friends in my office are waiting to buy new cars in 20-30 lakh range. But when pressed for Rexton, they say they would rather buy an Isuzu MUX or Ford Endeavor if Rexton comes close to their pricing, even when they like what they are seeing of new Rexton. So i think we can use this case to look into the psyche of Indian consumer on how they perceive value of brand and not of a product that might be better than an established brand's product. And i will do the same if put in their shoes.

Are these guesstimated prices or do you have access to privileged information? If you have a source, please quote or mention the same.

On the prices themselves, I'm not sure what to make of them. Too high for a Mahindra yet pricing from a segment lower (theoretically) for what it offers if quality, fit and finish is at par.

Edit: Just saw news from Autocar that this may not be called XUV700 after all.

Mahindra to drop alphanumeric name for Y400 SUV

XUV 7OO takes off exactly from where the 5OO finishes - and the above pricing is spot-on in that sense.

Just hope the product has lot more strengths other than pricing.

If these figures are true, the Rexton will indeed be a VFM offering. I think it has way more to offer than the outdated Indian version of the Isuzu MuX.

re: SsangYong Rexton (Y400) to be sold as Mahindra Alturas G4 in India

At prices just above XUV5OO, its going to be a real good offering. Let's see if Mahindra prices it as a VFM instead of pricing it at a premium like it's latest Shark (read Marazzo). Interestingly they continue with their tradition of names ending with 'O's. Inferno sounds cool but I don't think it suits well for a big SUV.

In the Mu-X's current avatar with an outdated power-train, definitely yes.

However, if Isuzu does update the power-train/ICE to the current international specifications, then I would still pick the MU-x since it is a proven platform rather than something from new from Ssyangong/Mahindra.

That is a terrible name for a car. Does Mahindra really want to associate a raging fire with its car in the minds of its customers?

I too agree that Inferno is a horrible name for the car. Looks like someone at Mahindra has been seeing too much Marvel movies. But I suppose if this car is going to be hero in the next Transformers movie, I think Inferno is acceptable.

Mahindra's Flagship SUV is likely to be called Mahindra Alturas G4 . Drops the alphanumeric name trend.

Does this mean that they haven't yet finalised a name or is this such a well kept secret? The cars are likely to be shipped to dealers without a name. The dealer will probably do the christening at the yard before delivery by when Mahindra would have chosen a 'NamO'.
