June 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

NOTES:

1: Thanks to the team at Auto Punditz for sharing these sales numbers with us!

2: Only cars that sell 500+ units (and thus, the relevant ones) have been included in the gainers & losers chart.

3. These manufacturer-reported sales numbers are factory dispatches to dealerships. They are NOT retail sales figures to end customers.

Re: June 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Few Points!

1. Compass numbers are declining. The dealers are also offering discounts on select variants.

2. Decent numbers for Freestyle again. Figo is just 54 units. Is it the Freestyle effect or the production has stopped?

3. New Amaze is doing really well. The diesel CVT has also managed to get good number of bookings as per local Honda dealer.

4. Verna is the segment leader for last month, thanks to reduced numbers of Ciaz because of upcoming facelift. Grand I10, I20 and Creta are bringing good numbers to Hyundai as usual.

5. Bolero is the best selling Mahindra. The demand in rural Indian market for Bolero is not going to die anytime soon.

6. Ignis is doing decent numbers even with only petrol engine. S-Cross face lift has almost doubled the sales compared to outgoing model. Dzire is the best selling Maruti, followed by Swift.

7. Bad days ahead for Renault Nissan alliance. Kwid numbers have reduced, below 5k!!. Nissan dealers would have shut, if not for Redi-Go which is the only model that sells in above average numbers. Captur is a big time flop.

8. Nothing new to write about VW - Skoda. The sales are below average.

9. Tata Motors is doing very good. Good comeback by Indian manufacturer

10. Yaris is bringing decent numbers to Toyota. Crysta is doing business as usual.

11. Out of top 10 cars sold last month,

Maruti : 6/10
Hyundai : 3/10
Honda : 1/10 (Yes, the new Amaze)

Re: June 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Maruti has a bumper month with top 5 sales numbers for its models. Hyundai takes 6 and 7th. Its BAU at the top.

Amaze is a super hit by the looks of it. 9k plus twice in a row now. The diesel CVT looks seems to be a much sought after model.

Yaris looks like will struggle to reach 2k from now. Will be interesting to know how many J variants made up its sales numbers. Verna and City still seem to maintain their sales, while the new Ciaz will surely relegate the Yaris to the bottom of its peer group

VW India must be VW's worst performing division in the entire world by the looks of it. Cant see things changing for VW any time soon.

Kodiak is outselling the Superb which again shows how people prefer SUVs over conventional sedans.

Nissan is again irrelevant while it's poor cousin Datsun is bringing in what ever sales there are. Just as VW needs new models, Nissan is also in the same boat.

Wonder when the new Duster will be launched, as it looks like the only hope left for good sales for Renault with Kwid also losing sales month after month.

Mustang reached double digits which must have pleased Ford

Re: June 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

For Maruti Suzuki the figures could have been better if not for losing a week of production due to its annual maintenance shutdown. Hence some cars like Brezza loses its top slot while reduction in Ertiga and Ciaz volumes are due to its upcoming launches.

Quote:
Every year, Maruti shuts down its plants for almost a week for conducting routine maintenance work. The three plants cumulatively produce 17.5 lakh cars each year, i.e. approximately 4,795 cars a day. Shutting the plants will lead to an overall production loss of 33,500 cars. This will also affect the deliveries of new vehicles.

Highlights for June:

-Maruti drops below 50% Market Share even though the OEM grew a humongous 44% YoY( low base value)!
- Hyundai grew a modest 20.8% YoY backed by New Creta & i20 launch
- Toyota’s growth was phenomenal basis Yaris performance (also it was affected the most during GST implementation)
- Tata Motors dethroned Mahindra from the 3rd spot!
- Even Honda overtook Mahindra’s passenger vehicle sales by a very strong market response for its newly launched Amaze.
- Ford too had a great month and the same is attributed to the newly launched Freestyle

Re: June 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

I did an analysis of how much money a model is bringing in for the manufacturer, by averaging out the ex-showroom prices. It reveals some pretty interesting insights.

These numbers don't necessarily denote profits though, just the cash being brought in.

Some of the most out of place cars are Creta, Verna and Innova.

Re: June 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

My 2 cents:

Datsun should see some traction thanks to the 5 year warranty that's on offer

Fiat had better completely shift to a B2B model! Their showrooms in Bangalore have slowly disappeared!

Ford seems to facing heat in the mini SUV segment. The EcoSport face lift has offers to the tune of 30k

Honda has hit the sweet spot with the Amaze. The detuned iDTec on the CVT does not seem to have affected performance

Hyundai themselves seem to have no answer to the resounding success of the Creta

Maruti needs no lessons on how to crush competition. I saw the new Dzire up close and that took away any element of surprise on why the sales charts are on fire

Renault really needs to give the Duster a serious makeover

Tata has gone well beyond the initial buzz with the Nexon and can safely be called a success

Toyota must be worried. The Yaris may soon start seeing discounts

The VW twins must be looking at the sales charts and staring at each other in dismay

Re: June 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Interestingly Maruti has seen a big dip compared to Hyundai. June is not really a month where we see booming sales anyways.

Baleno, Vitara Brezza bit down - could it be due to Amaze and Nexon ?

Yaris selling close to 2K back to back, perhaps the backlogs ? it will be interesting to see what happens after the initial 3-4 month sales.

Maruti plants were shut down for a week due to routine annual maintenance work.

Re: June 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Top 5 cars are MSIL - speaks volumes about what the nation's default brand of choice is !

Dzire & Swift selling more than Altos and WagonRs - signs of changing times where the cheapest is no longer the best selling car?

Freestyle for Ford & Amaze for Honda, both proving to be just the right launch at the right time to retain their share of the market.

With the monthly sales they are making - Fiat & Nissan should be worried, very worried. They are both on sister brand crutches, namely Jeep & Renault, who themselves aren't huge sellers either.

Why are HM mitsubishi even posting numbers?

I don't think Yaris is selling as much as Toyota would have liked. Effects of overpricing?

Re: June 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

New Creta seems to be doing its job of keeping numbers afloat.

Ford EcoSport has dropped off significantly in numbers. It seems it cannot take on Vitara Breeza.

Honda Amaze is consistently at 9K for two months. I will be amazed if it continues that streak.

Ciaz has tapered off, new one seems to be around the corner. New S-Cross is doing good numbers at 4K average.

And poor Captur. <literally have nothing else to say about Captur!>

And what, Tata Motors has zoomed past both Mahindra and Honda!

Re: June 2018 : Indian Car Sales Figures & Analysis

Just one word for Maruti.. Wow!! Especially with Swift and Dzire outselling the Alto!! Also the Baleno almost beating Alto..

As usual numbers for Hyundai. Verna took the pole position for this month in its category. With the upcoming Ciaz face-lift things will get interesting in that segment.

Amaze is ringing in the volumes for Honda. Diesel CVT did the trick and I hope that it will be reliable. Based on Amaze's numbers Honda might bring in the diesel CVT in all its products and take the first mover advantage. (Volkswagen is not popular like a Honda and its DSG is notorious)

Honda and Toyota did one good favor with Amaze and Yaris respectively. Amaze got the proper Diesel Automatic and Yaris got all the safety features in base variant as well.
Now Atleast other manufacturers will sit and think about introducing these features in their products. Hyundai would definitely try to introduce this in their top sellers to up the competition.

All the new launches from Tata doing decent numbers. While Hexa's numbers are not too great but it is not too dull either. It is a competent product and Tata is doing right things at right time now.
