To me at least, it is not surprising that Maruti is launching Swift Diesel now. In fact, many auto magazines were suggesting that Maruti's Diesel plant would be up and running by the year end 2006. So, this seems like a logical point when Swift Diesel should be launched. Well, let us see how Fiat's claimed 1.3 JTD performs here! It will be there in virtually all small cars barring Hyundai cars..

I was watching the ticker in CNBC-TV18 and it mentioned that the swift diesel engine will be a 75 bhp one
I doubt it. The Swift DDis in UK has a 68bhp engine. Wonder how MUL will have a 75bhp unit with our diesel quality. On the other hand, Fiat Grande Punto comes with a 75bhp unit in Europe. Looks like Fiat has kept the latest tech diesel for itself. Lets see what the specs are on the Swift here and more importantly how they price it at. Suzuki's UK site lists the DDis Swift at approx GBP 9,799 = Rs.7.85Lacs! In comparo, the 1.3L petrol is listed at GBP 8,100 = Rs. 6.50 Lacs. Difference between petrol and diesel of about Rs. 1.35 lakhs. I am guessing the difference between Petrol and diesel in India should be about Rs.0.75-0.80 lacs.

Note: GBP1=Rs80.

PS: I know we can't take UK pricing as a guide on Indian prices.

This is what I heard too, that too with the 1.9 JTD. One of my colleagues is in the hunt for the new Baleno and upon his enquiry, this information was furnished by the dealers at Bangalore.

There are 2 petrols in Europe, a 1.3 and the 1.5 VVT. Features wise you get fuel consumption display, driver and passenger airbags, side and curtain bags, ABS+EBD, immobiliser, steering mounted audio controls as tangable features, IMO, over the Indian swift. You have to upgrade to the GLX to get air-conditioning (NOT climate control) and fog lamps. By the way, you don't even have an option to buy the 1.3L in GLX trim there! I'd say things are more or less even on the features v/s price ratio between UK and India. Anyway, I already said in my earlier post that I know we cannot take UK prices as a guide to Indian prices. I was only trying to speculate on Indian prices based on the UK price list and spec. In all probablity, I may be proved wrong by MUL.

New Baleno with a 1.9 JTD diesel.. Wow ! that sounds really interesting..IMO There is a huge market for a good Diesel Sedan in the 6- 8 lakhs segment

looks like 2007 will be the year of diesels..

Hi,

According to what I heard, the entry level swift diesel is going to be priced at least 50K more than the petrol ZXI.This is to avoid cannibalising the petrol variants

1.3 JTD engine starts at 68 bhp in the Swift and goes upto 89 bhp for the Grande Punto. The difference between the two is variable inlet geometry, and different engine management. A 1.6 with over 115 bhp was announced, but no news after that.

The 1.9 JTD puts out between 90 and 150 bhp, depending on the no of valves, intake geometry, and engine management.

I highly doubt it's that simple. It probably has a lot to do with Fiat-GM-Suzuki alliances and agreements.
