Re: Car designs you didn't like initially, but then warmed up to?

For me it has to be:

Maruti Esteem (especially this particular model):

I absolutely hated it's quirky front (somehow looked like it was cross eyed). Even wondered why we even bought it. Then started liking it after few months.

Maruti Zen

Everything about it reminded me of a capsule (headlights, indicators, brake lights etc) and wasn't able to digest the design initially.

Skoda Yeti

Lights were weird, B pillars were oddly shaped and rear was too boxy. Somehow felt the car was designed by two different guys who never met. But this was one car that grew on me so quickly. I would buy this car if I had the money now.

Re: Car designs you didn't like initially, but then warmed up to?

Cars which eventually grew on me:
  • First Gen Hyundai Santro. The Subsequent Xing made the brand more acceptable.
  • First Gen Maruti WagonR
  • Daewoo Matiz: I hated its looks initially, but now am a big fan of the product.
  • Maruti SX4
  • Maruti Ritz: The product's strong points made me like it, not the looks.

Re: Car designs you didn't like initially, but then warmed up to?

There are cars which grew on me due to their character and then there are some whose looks grew on me over a period of time. I will include only the latter in my list:

1. HM Ambassador
2. First gen Santro
3. Innova Crysta
4. Nissan Sunny
5. Tata Estate

Re: Car designs you didn't like initially, but then warmed up to?

Once I develop disliking (in looks department) for something, it's difficult for me to develop liking for it. The only exception to this is VW Polo.

It's not that I had hated Polo. When it was launched its was just okayish. In the era of New Verna and new Ford Fiesta, Polo was still having same design and I was thinking what VW is doing.

I did not like it's design for many years. However after a decade, I really love Polo's look very much. I must say it's ageing very well despite minimal changes. Thanks to it's timeless design.

In general for designs, the more you observe them, the more you either start liking them or disliking them.

I fully agree with your observation. I have noticed this in a lot of Toyota models worldwide and in India. To me, they appear a bit overstyled and oddly proportioned in the beginning. But 2-3 years later they start looking very "current" whereas other cars start looking dated in that time period. Didn't like Innova Crysta, New Fortuner or Corolla when they were launched but they all look nice to me now. Qualis is an obvious exception though, it will be forever ugly

Bentley Bentayga

When the initial renders/spy pics came out, it was hideous! I think Bentley went back to the drawing board to do some tweaks.
At launch I didn't like it, but didn't hate it either.
Now after seeing a few in the flesh and some kitted ones abroad, I quite like it. Don't love it yet but maybe if I owned one I would

Re: Car designs you didn't like initially, but then warmed up to?

Designs which I initially despised but was having 2nd thoughts a little down the line:

1. Toyota Fortuner facelift (hated the Japanese robot-like design, and the massive kink; liked the masculine older variant)
2. Split eyed Octavia (the design really grew on me once I saw the VRS in person)
3. Baleno hatchback (initially did not like the rounded hatch, later liked the squat stance)

Designs which I abhorred before and till date:

1. KUV, TUV and the likes (no way Jose)
2. Dolphin Honda City (bloated)
3. Tata Nano (won't catch me dead in one)
4. Toyota Yaris (trying too hard and coming up with zilch)
5. Tata Manza (rounded front and squarish boot..nope)

Absolutely , I had the same feelings when the TUV3OO was launched. The front end was at least digestible, but the abrupt end to the rear end was beyond me. I sweared, I would never even look at this car. One fine day, I went to Mahindra showroom to check out the XUV5OO. I took a test drive and was impressed, however the big XUV5OO was a squeeze in my tight parking. Besides the XUV5OO was standing an Orange TUV3OO. I thought of peeping inside it and was blown away by the space offered in a compact 4m footprint. The packaging inside the cabin was very neat, decent interiors, simple dashboard. When I test drove it, I loved the low end grunt. A tough body-on-frame build, rear wheel drive, proper SUV with smaller turning radius and the top end being priced at under 10 lacs on-road, meant only one thing, I voted for the TUV with my wallet and bought it home.

With each passing day my love for the TUV is growing manifold and whoever has said that "Looks can be very deceptive" was so very right

How about the Audi Q7 ? Hated the redesigned version initially but it eventually grew on me.

Re: Car designs you didn't like initially, but then warmed up to?

For me, it has to be the W222 S Class. The first images were revealed on the internet in early 2013 I suppose. It appeared very very Korean and too flashy to me. But when I saw this video, things took a turn and could imagine how classy it actually would be.

After that, I saw the S in the fancy Mumbai hotels and the road presence was UNMATCHED! it's too classy, stately and elegant. From that day, I decided not to judge how a car looks like just from pics.

Re: Car designs you didn't like initially, but then warmed up to?

The other day, came across this immaculately maintained 3-door Maruti Zen, parked in our society compound.

It was a carbon steel variant and I guess, it was last on sale in 2002-03 and was limited to 400-500 copies only.

I never liked the Zen back then but this time around, it was a different story.

I kept looking at her for a few minutes and so wanted to take her out for a ride.

Looks I liked then, and wish would come back - Contessa Classic. Maybe because it's so evocative of a muscle car.

Re: Car designs you didn't like initially, but then warmed up to?

For me it is Ford Aspire 2018 facelift. I love the Aston Martini-ish front grills of previous Aspire. I hated the honeycomb grills of the facelift Aspire.
But after a few months, I started loving Honeycomb grills which now look classic to me.
