^^^ The black thingy is the masking tape IMO. Yes, the gap of max 1 cm does exist in the bonnet, but, it is necessary to avoid the rattles, which could otherwise turn the rock the ride like an orchestra drums (Sivamani without any notes).

Good catch, I think the taped off portion above the rear glass is LAND ROVER DISCOVERY type sky lights. Hope they also take off the rain water running lines above the windows, the rear suspension also still seems to be leaf spring. Looking at the tapes on the back door, TATA looks like its getting the spare wheel back there, and in some images, looks like there are 3 rows of front facing seats

I wonder why is Tata testing this particular version of the Sumo? Dont spy anything interesting in the pics. With the rear high fixed glass, this looks like an old landrover version.
Two possibilities in my opinion.
1) A cheap capable 4x4 offroader, based on the short Sumo chassis.
2) Just using the Sumo mule as a camo. Testing some new engines, chassis, running gear under the old body.

I second Apachelongbow's second point. It could be just a mule with sumo's clothing. Probably Mini Sumo/ Grande whatever is coming.

It could be TATA is learning a lesson or two from Mahindra, how they updated their workhorse BOLERO. Once up on a time Sumo ruled the roads, TATA might be trying hard to regain the legacy.
