Not only the front row. In Innova second row with bucket seats recline too and many other cars. It is just that nothing can be taken for granted. When we recline the top part of the seatbelt is always around the neck unless you push it behind the neck.

Re: BHPians, what rules do you apply for passengers in your car?

Great Thread! My Rules :-
  • Front passengers must always buckle up. No expceptions
  • No PitBull songs
  • No old whiny depressing songs that suck out my enthusiam.
  • No Trance Music
  • Rear passengers buckle up on highways.
  • No backseat driving. If you keep saying 'Be Careful' for every overtake, I will lose my mind and kick you out.
  • Food & Drink is okay as long as you don't spill.
  • Shotgun doesn't get to sleep on longer drives
  • Do not put out any limbs out of the window to feel the wind, especially your face.
  • Don't try and feed me a snack while I'm driving at a relatively higher speed. When I think its safe, i'll extend my hands.
  • No Littering outside the car, keep it in a pocket till the next stop with a bin.
  • Don't complain about me waiting for the signal to turn green, just because others are moving past.
  • Shotgun is in-charge of keeping change and receipts ready for tolls on out-station drives before we pull up to the booth.
  • Don't have an hour long conversation on your phone with a friend while we're on a trip. I will wait 5 mins before the music comes back to its original volume

Re: BHPians, what rules do you apply for passengers in your car?

Great thread! I too have some guidelines, all of which are followed properly only by me

1) Seat Belts! I wear everytime while traveling in a car to the point that it feels weird not wearing it. Dad and sister always wear seatbelts on their own (mom doesn't feel comfortable while wearing it, so she's given a pass). I gave up forcing other passengers to wear seatbelts, thanks to their resistance and their "no need of one" attitude! This comes from the kind of people who never wear helmets while riding motorcycles (same "no need of it" attitude).

I do pity anyone sitting on middle of the rear seat, not being able to use the non-retracting hip belt.

2) Back seat driving - As an enthusiast, I love to explore the speeds and limits of our car occasionally. I do lose my calm when people lecture me on how to drive or slow down. Only exception to this rule is my dad, who I allow to lecture occasionally, as I'm an inexperienced driver, and he lets me drive on my own as long as I'm doing it fine.

3) Force feeding me - I don't mind my passengers eating a snack or something, as long as they don't spill or dirty the interiors. But I've OCD for keeping my surroundings (area close to my feet or my body) clean. So I'm willing to go hungry as long as it means a pass from not eating anything while I'm traveling in a car. I'm willing to make few stops en route if required for eating.

4) Fiddling with dashboard controls - No need of explaining this. I'm willing to do it if anyone requests me to change music, volume or control the A/C.

5) Windows Up all time! Thanks to high ambient noise from traffic and polluted air on roads, I'd rather prefer the cleaner, filtered air from A/C. Fortunately, my passengers cooperate with me regarding this, except while traveling on hilly roads, which I don't mind, though I always have my window closed.

6) No stickers on windshield or bumpers! I'm waiting for the next time to give an earful to someone who sticks something on our car. Speaking of which, I've to remove the dealer sticker now.

7) Blocking the left ORVM - I'd politely ask front passenger not to block it, if they unknowingly do so.

8) No smoking in the car! This is a strict no from me, since passive smoking is more dangerous than active smoking. Also, I hate the smell of the smoke. Fortunately none of my friends and relatives have even attempted to smoke inside the car.

9) Closing the door slowly - It does feel bad when someone slams our door, especially while we're inside. To be honest, I'm also sometimes guilty of this. We Indians can't help our truck door closing style

10) Detours! To people who recommend me to take the shortest route everytime, I'll reply that I don't mind or just ignore them. To me, a comfortable ride and protecting the tyres, suspension and the chassis are more important than saving a litre or two of petrol. I'm even willing to drive longer distances for experiencing great roads.

Please, for a short time, be uncomfortable. It's the law, it's for a good reason, and you will get used to it.

Sometimes, it's ok for the kids to lecture the parents!

Re: BHPians, what rules do you apply for passengers in your car?

My car is like my own kingdom. Only my rules apply there.
  1. No consumption of food: I strictly don't allow anyone to eat anything inside my car. I am fine to stop the car and let people have food outside.
  2. Never put food packets on the bonnet or on top of my car. I don't like food stains on my ride.
  3. Buckle up (everyone) even if we are going for a 500 meters drive.
  4. Do not fold your legs while you are wearing shoes.
  5. Clean your shoes before stepping into my car. ( I carry extra water bottles and tissue for the purpose)
  6. If you see a bird poop on my car immediately tell me. ( I carry two spray bottles filled with soapy water & freshwater followed by a microfibre cloth. I always wipe bird poop mark on my car at first glance.)
  7. Don't touch my windshield with your fingers. I clean them regularly with a microfibre cloth and wet newspapers.
  8. Don't ask me to drive faster. I always choose the speed at my convenience.
  9. Mind the sharp edges of your handbags. I don't want scratches on my interior

That's all.

I wish I could be "uncomfortable" atleast for a short time as you mentioned. I hate the thought of hearing those people mention me as "a jerk" behind my back, when they're the ones behaving like a jerk by not cooperating for their own safety.

For mom, the edge of the seatbelt brushes against her neck. Maybe a seatbelt cushion will solve the problem. Other than that issue, she will gladly oblige to wear the seatbelt, as she's aware of the importance of the seatbelts.

I'm ok with chips and chocolate bars, and sandwiches which don't disintegrate and leave debris inside the car.

Also no littering inside the car. I carry a small garbage receptacle that I insist be used. If it is packets and the like which are bigger, I dedicate a garbage bag for that that needs to be cleaned each stop.

Smoking (in all forms and of all things) is a big no-no, but liquids which are juices and water are allowed. I prefer not letting people open cans/bottles of soft drinks as I've had them spray the interior quite often, and cleaning up is tiresome.

Though unfortunately I am forced to bear with the dirt (sand) when we go to a beach front. On "stink" absolutely agree ... though my wet dogs are exempted from said rule !!

I once had a whole chocolate bar melt on my car seat. Luckily, the seats in that car where pure, unashamed plastic (the original-model Honda Civic was quite basic) and, once set, all the chocolate just chipped off. If the seat had been cloth, it would have been awful.

Re: BHPians, what rules do you apply for passengers in your car?

My set of rules
1. No unnecessary fiddling around with Window glasses. I don’t like when people can’t find one location for their window and keep on shuting it up and down. It drives me nuts. However to overcome this I’ve started using AC throughout any journey So the passenger doesn’t have to fiddle to get right temp.
2. No issues in eating snacks etc but everything will be put in a portable dustbin. I am allergic to people pushing and concealing wrappers inside door cupholders.
3. No liquid or oily thing will be carried along if it poses slightest of chances of leakage. If it still has to be carried it will not be carried it the boot. The copassenger will carry it and hold it from spillage.
4. No issues in smoking. Just let me know so I can drive a little slow and the smoker has to throw the ash and bud out of the window.
5. Seatbelt is a must.
6. You can have my phone to fiddle around with the music but don’t mess with the music system. Specially abrupt changes is volume.
7. I’ll change the track whenever I have to.
8. No chatting or yapping when I’m driving in triple digits. I don’t do it unless the road permits. But if I am doing it you are humbly requested to keep shut during that time.
9. No opinions on ongoing traffic and how should I drive. I hate it when people tell me when to overtake and when not to. I’ve been pretty vocal of such passengers and truly hate it.

Rules 😂
Used to have many but had to bend them for my family and eventually the only rule right now is not to break my head.

Re: BHPians, what rules do you apply for passengers in your car?

I have my set of do's and don'ts, as I'm sure we all do. I simply ended up following the visionairy Himesh Saar's directions, which are all the more important in these crazy times.

No touching, no touching,
Only seeing, only seeing
No touching, only seeing

Understand?

Re: BHPians, what rules do you apply for passengers in your car?

I have my set of rules that might seem crazy.

1. Everyone has to buckle up. I dont care even if your parents are cops. Its for my safety and your's and the car's. No negotiations and zero compromise.
2. Do not tell he how to drive. Especially to speed or take dangerous decisions. I drive my car/your car in a way I seem fit and safe. Non negotiable. Zero compromise.
3. I will not drop you in the middle of a road/busy street nor will I park in a 'No Parking' zone however urgent it maybe. I'll find a place that I can safely tuck the vehicle into before you get out. Non negotiable. Zero compromise. (The Mrs hates me for this )
4. Water, candy bars, and things that will not leave crumbs anywhere are welcome. No food item that will stink up the place will be allowed in the car. I like my car clean and smelling like a new car thank you very much.
5. No sharp objects in the car, especially that scratch at a level 6 and deeper grooves at level 7. Hey bring in porcupine spikes if you've covered the rough edges. Non negotiable. Zero compromise.
6. No I will never go down the wrong way of the road even if it means driving 5 or 10 kms for a U turn. Non negotiable. Zero compromise.
7. No funny business/ unlawful activities in the car. That includes drinking and smoking. I'll stop at a dhaba/bar/teashop if you're keen on doing things on the trip. Non negotiable. Zero compromise.
8. Front co passenger cannot sleep or talk on the phone for more than 5 minutes. For that scarifice he can select tunes to be played(from my spotify list).
9. Beach trips get sandy and its fine. But I will bring out my curly mats and put it over the 3d mats. No one can complain. Non negotiable. Zero compromise.

Re: BHPians, what rules do you apply for passengers in your car?

Hahaha. This is my kind of a post.

I have a few set rules. Before sitting in the car and after sitting in the car.

Before sitting in the car:

1. Do not lean on the car! I myself do not lean on my car, let alone anybody else's. If it is absolutely necessary, the B Pillar is the only place to lean on. Nowhere else. No bonnet, no boot, no grille nothing.

2. Wear clean shoes before stepping in the car. When sitting, open the door at a comfortable angle and sit with your feet out of the car and clank them a couple of times before you turn your feet in.

3. Do not SLAM the door! I repeat. Do not SLAM door!

You guys get the hang of it by now. So let's move on to "After you sit in the car"

1. Adjust the seat the way you are comfortable. No problems with that. Be gentle though. Don't fight with the seat adjustment.

2. Adjust the AirCon knobs the way they are supposed to be. Not by putting your fingers in the vents.

3. Legs are supposed to be on the floor. Not on the dash. Not on the windscreen. And definitely not hanging out of the window. Side note: The windows of the car rarely open when out on the road.

4. Do not touch any glass (passenger door or the windshield with your fingers. I absolutely hate it when this happens.

5. Phone is supposed be in your pocket or in the cellphone holder.

6. If you are using your hands to give me directions, don't! Tell me left and I will go left. Stop blocking my view in the ORVMs.

7. No eatables in the car. Only water allowed. Bottles with a narrow mouth preffered.

8. Finally to get out of the car. Watch for any dividers, walls, poles, stones, rocks before you open the door.

And yes. All occupants abide by the rules mentioned above.
