re: Mahindra TUV300 facelift spied sans camouflage. EDIT: Launched as Bolero Neo at Rs. 8.48 lakhs

As per Hindustan Times Auto the all new Bolero Neo comes with 1.5 litre 4 cylinder diesel mill from XUV3OO! In XUV3OO the engine produces some 114 BHP of power & 300 NM of torque.

Some of us here were of the impression that the XUV 300's/Marazzo's 1.5 litre engine is only good for FWD cars and that the Bolero/TUV's 1.5L engine is fit for RWD applications. I can't properly recall though if it is technically meant to be that way or if this is just Mahindra's bifurcation of its engines.

So far no concrete information has been made officially whether the 4 Cylinder 1.5 Diesel can be mated with a RWD configuration. The only downer of the TUV300 was the 3 cylinder engine which had a slow pick up on highway speeds, the 4 cylinder motor is just like the 2.2L Mhawk diesel, a mix of good low end torque and high speed whack. If the news is true, it will certainly push the bolero neo miles ahead of TUV300.

When Innova was launched, Qualis loyalists hated for what Toyota did and in couple years, Innova went on to become a blockbuster and was very well accepted. They did same with Crysta too. Selling one model well makes much better economic sense than selling two independent models in average numbers.
The original plan of launching TUV was that only, they had planned to discontinue the bolero after the launch of TUV. However, as soon as Bolero lovers got to know this there was a huge amount of resentment amongst the buyers and they were forced to sell TUV alongside the Bolero and thus marking a slow end to TUV.

re: Mahindra TUV300 facelift spied sans camouflage. EDIT: Launched as Bolero Neo at Rs. 8.48 lakhs

The Tank philosophy continues just with a facelift!

Why can't Mahindra design from scratch; all they want is same wheelbase, same gauge chassis and same weight of the engine from other Mahindras
All this has contributed to the ungainly proportions of TUV aka Bolero Neo.
If Suzuki can design a lightweight Gypsy with Body on frame then there should be no problem with Mahindra given the lineage they have today.

I think they should take inspiration from Qualis for wheel size. 14-inchers all round may reduce unsprung mass shudder associated with TUVs and Boleros.
A lightweight Bolero with agile handling is always welcome.
But if the protuding doors gonna still hit occupants heads, rear wheels are going to spin and Daul mass flywheel woes are going to continue, then this is again a dud on arrival.

Going by the Tata strategy, why don't they revive Commander/Major moniker still cherished in the rural India?
Anyway they try it, this 'tank' has none of the USPs the yesteryear Mahindras had.

re: Mahindra TUV300 facelift spied sans camouflage. EDIT: Launched as Bolero Neo at Rs. 8.48 lakhs

Here is my take on the Bolero - TUV - Bolero brand strategy Mahindra is playing.
- I believe the TUV was always designed to be a replacement of the Bolero.
- Mahindra knows that Bolero is a relic, it simply wont comply with future needs of customers as well as regulatory norms.
- Bolero is Mahindra's bread and butter. It is what the 800 (or the Alto after that for Maruti) and replacing it overnight with a different model can be suicidal. What if customers don't take to the new model as they did with the original.
- Thus they introduce the TUV 3oo first as a somewhat a lifestyle urban brand, thus enabling them to charge a somewhat (again that somewhat!) premium pricing. Dare I say iron out some niggles too!
- Then comes the TUV + which contrary to the original TUV is more rustic, more designed as a people mover and not a step up from the TUV 300. This is perhaps why it was not 'launched' with a lot of fanfare and simply existed in Mahindra's lineup.
- Then comes the updated TUV 300 as Bolero Neo. And the TUV brand? It is slowly on the way out!
- That leads to the question what happens to the TUV +? There it is, that's your new Bolero! Mahindra will make the switch when they know there is sufficient diffusion of the Bolero customers into the TUV. They will play it ultra cautiously.

Sanju

Another factor here is that the TUV3oo+ also came with the mHawk. A far more superior engine to what the Bolero Power+ comes with (75PS 3 POT 1.5). So the Bolero NEO+ when it comes will definitively be costlier than the current Bolero anyway.
So like you mentioned - there needs to be a smartly choreographed overlap + transition period to make this shift and customer orientation. Sudden change would indeed put their market share in this utility segment at risk (even when there is no proper competition per se).

re: Mahindra TUV300 facelift spied sans camouflage. EDIT: Launched as Bolero Neo at Rs. 8.48 lakhs

I think the Bolero and Bolero Neo can coexist. The sales explains that some buyers are happy with 75 PS. For those who are not, Bolero Neo 100 PS is the way to go. To those who want a lifestyle vehicle, there's Thar(or a cheaper Thar 1.5L 100PS in the future).

Mahindra is filling all the SUV space, except for the 4.3 m Creta rival, which will be a runaway success if launched with a good set of engine and gearbox options. They can standout if they bring in a 4WD/AWD.

Also, if the new Scorpio has a step up in the pricing area, the TUV300 plus 2.2L mHawk will be a good replacement. They only need to improve the rear leg room(simply keep it the TUV300 way).

So, the TUV becomes the Bolero Neo.

I have to admit, it is a wise decision.
The Bolero brand has immense pull in rural/semi urban landscape.

However, what happens to the TUV brand name then?

I really doubt this.
The Bolero Neo was supposed to inherit the same 3-Cylinder 1.5 Engine from the TUV!

Hope agains hope, that's a great news. But most probably it is just a quick article hobbled together. They must have known that the 1.5l is there, and assumed it is the XUV300's 1.5l engine.

Nice observation!
Is it only me or someone else can also sense some (not much) resemblance with Jeep Compass from the front side?
