Regardless of the price, I would still go for a good diesel SUV.

For Indian roads its nothing like and SUV or UV, ofcourse a diesel one. for me it would be a Bolero with the CRDI this monster wont bother about the road conditions not matter how bad it it, have seen these machines shoot on bad roads while most of the cars will be crying

+1 to that for the Bolero. Had once a broken fan belt on the highway and still could drive it at night without over heating the engine to the nearest garage. Can never imagine that in a sedan.

Going a little OT but if you ever face such a situation in any car.
Turn the AC temperature setting all the way to RED.
Blower speed at max.

Keep eye on temp meter and drive to nearest garage.

I would love to own a diesel SUV. Apart from offering loads of space and the fun factor, practically it makes sense given the condition of majority of indian roads.

A diesel sedan preferably a german. I currently own a vento tdi driven 90% on highway. Reasons for choosing it over a suv
1. 55litres of fuel tank gives a minimum range of 1100kms.
2.low running costs due to F.E. between 21-25kmpl with A/C.
3.Big boot so don't have to put the luggage on the roof which will reduce F.E. and increase drag.
4.well insulated cabin so let road, tyre and wind noise.
5. Good fit and finish so a rattle free ride.
6.supportive seats.
7.suspension have a good combo of ride and handling so less rolling and pitching.
8.lighter weight results in better braking than suvs.
9. Better power to weight ratio and better acceleration than suvs.
10. Better high speed stability.

Re: Highway usage: Diesel Car or SUV ?

I voted for a Diesel Sedan, though I own a Diesel SUV. Over the highway, I was more comfortable with Sedans due to better cruising speed, sturdy and comfort. A sedan like Jetta or Superb can't be beaten by a Captiva or Fortuner.

However, I am sure an SUV with Car-like-comfort cannot be ignored. Through haven't driven one, I think a Nissan X-Trail kind of urban SUVs could be a better choice.

Re: Highway usage: Diesel Car or SUV ?

My vote is always SUV. I drive a Scorpio and the most fun thing on Highways is the 'collaborative play around' with Volvo / MB Multi Axle busses especially when you feel bored. You could easily pass them and hover around without much efforts.

Then you get a lot of respect on the road

Re: Highway usage: Diesel Car or SUV ?

There is no way you're going to get consensus here. I, personally, would get a sedan - and I did.

COMFORT: Some people claim that the SUV will be more comfortable because of the higher seating position and more space inside. The 'more 'space inside' argument is usually valid and the higher seating position will definitely afford greater visibility BUT... SUVs are also louder than sedans - more tire noise, more wind noise and more engine noise. It's a well known fact that all things being equal the louder your car is, the more tired you're going to be after a long drive. SUVs are also usually bouncier than sedans. I personally had to sit in the second row of a first-gen Scorpio for a few hours on a highway run and I was appalled at how uncomfortable it was.

SAFETY: Remember one thing - the safest accident to have is the one you don't have at all. Sedans have much better control and handling than SUVs and a much, much lower center of gravity which means they're much less prone to toppling over.

At the end of the day, if you're confused between a sedan and an SUV, pick one or two of each in your final shortlist and drive them. See if you can get a highway test drive and then decide which one you enjoy driving more and which one meets your requirements best.

I would prefer SUV for highway.

1. Comfortable high seating position.
2. Better on bad roads.
3. Road presence.

Would prefer a diesel SUV something like XUV which has better mannerisms on road than compared to Scorpio/Safari. It has got acres of space and makes it very easy to stretch oneself when he needs some rest. Goes without saying the fuel tank of 71 liters, increased ground clearance. Throw in a Thule Overhead Carrier and you have a perfect Indian Overlander
