Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

Well mine is Zen updated model which I bought when I was 23 years. Now every one suggested against Zen and wanted me to go for Santro , Wagon R or Swift. But I loved the low slung seating and the drive in Zen and bought it new even though I knew was getting phased out in couple of months. And boy what fun I had in that, unfortunately sold it when I got Fiesta 1.6s after 4 years.
I guess Zen spoiled me for that low seating and I can never think about owning a high seating / GC vehicle.

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

Haven't bought a car yet, but I bought 2 motorcycles with my own money last year, at the age of 22

Here's a link to the thread on my first bike: https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/motor...max-100-a.html (My first motorcycle | 2001 Suzuki Max 100)
One of the last posts in the thread talks about my second bike too.

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

My first ever vehicle purchase with my own money is my current ride Tigor XT Diesel, bought it back in Dec 2017, when I was 28 years old. Dad had asked to go preowned way but as this was my first purchase(although we had multiple vehicles in the family) I wanted it to be a memorable and niggle free thing. Stretched my EMI budget and went for it, I am very satisfied by the decision. 4.3 years and 68000k. later the car has held up good and another reason for buying new is that I will keep the car with me for long, minimum 10 years.
Whats something interesting is that my dads first car was a Sedan(1962 fiat ss) bought in 1989(couple of days before I was born, to bring me home in a 'car') which had a 1 litre engine. my first car is also a sedan(compact) with a 1 litre engine.
My car registration numbers last four characters are the birth year of my uncle and the last 6 characters are same as the last 6 characters of my bosses first car! coincidences!
Below are 2 year old pics of my car

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

A possession very close to every motor lover. Indeed a superb thread. And i would like to mention that it's all fate and hard work which makes us absolute owner of a beautiful machine, congratulations to those who earned the ownership tag in early 20s, and people in 30s certainly had more financial responsibilities to cater to before taking trip to the automobile showroom. A big applause for all absolute owners

I took the plunge at the age of 35 years. And i would certainly like to acknowledge the ease of financial payments which EMI has bought us in this age.

My choice was the 2017 model Honda BRV Petrol V-MT for its ground clearance, interior space and ergonomics in ease of ingress/egress which suit the aged in our families very much. Secondly I don't always drive with full capacity of seven passengers, during travel vacations max 3+D passengers are seated and after folding the last row of seats there is space bigger than a bath tub to accommodate all you could possibly wish to throw in.

Got the PDI done smoothly :-

First vehicle with my own money : 1998 : Bajaj Chetak for 3500.00 was in my mid 20s. First car with my own (borrowed) money : 2009 : M800.

Both were scrapped after use.

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

OT, If I may...this poll has a statistical flaw considering the shift in spending power over the years. The chances of people in 20s buying a car out of their own pay check in 80s is way different from the 2000s which is again significantly different in 2020's. Purchase power has been getting better and younger over the years. It would be interesting to see how the age group changes w.r.t buying their first car out of their pay check every decade. One step better would be to find the cost they were willing to pay for their first car with every decade.

We have the populace and participation in this forum to make this poll a reliable indicator. I am just not sure if the forum can host such a complex poll.

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

I bought my first car, a 1996 - 1.6L L4 DOHC 16V - Toyota Corolla with ODO of 92K Miles (1.48L KM), at the age of 25 after landing in an Island in US . I bought it from a Pakistani dealer and though the car was 11 years old, it was clean and mechanically sound. I thought the dealer will ask upwards of $3000. I just had 2 to 3 months of savings from salary and the dealer asked how much I am willing to pay. I said I have only $2000 in hand and he said fine take the car. Then I felt I should have bargained more (typical for an Indian landing in US for first time) and asked him if he can give some discounts. He again asked me, okay, so how much are you willing to pay? I said $1800 and he again said, fine take it. Honestly I was shocked and started doubting if this car is a junk and the dealer just wants to get rid of it. Anyway took the leap of faith, bought it for $1800, drove it for another 32K miles (51k KM) over 5 years, with only expense being oil change, and one set of brake pads, and sold it exactly for $1800 while leaving the Island The lady who bought it from me offered $2000 when I asked her how much is she willing to pay; and I took only $1800 from her. That was the time I realized what Toyota means in US for a common man.

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

For those of us who have spent their early career days in the US in the 90s, there was no getting around a pre owned Honda/Toyota as a reliable, inexpensive first car option. It was either a Civic/Accord or Corolla/Camry, Nissan came a distant third, and GM, Ford , Chrysler were almost frowned upon in the newbie-desi diaspora for ownership. Of course when it came to renting, it was the American brands because they had good space, powerful engines. My first rental was a Pontiac Bonneville V6, 3.8L. It was an absolute blast to drive. Two of my friends got tickets in that car for speeding at 79 and 100mph, but technically speaking, we didn't feel a thing while doing those silly speeds. It was a different world back then.

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

Early 30s. Learnt driving, got DL and booked the car.

Considered the Beat, but chose Spark as Beat was a new model and I wanted to give it some time so that any problems discovered when people actually use it get addressed. Got a Beat when I upgraded 5 years later.

I was 29 when I bought my Bluey! Ignis Zeta 1.2P AMT, Nexa Blue.

Didn't buy a used one because didn't want to take the pain and risk.

Loving it to the CORE!

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

When the company I joined after MBA asked in their interview form that what would I do with the first savings, I wrote I'd buy a used Skoda Laura TSI, this was in 2017 January.
In January 2020, happy that I had made the dream come true, I bought the car and enjoyed it every time I drove it, it's a hoot really.
I still miss it! Sold it within 16 months though, to get an Audi Q2, so the first stint was very short.
