Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

I Bought my first car in November, 2014, when I was 29 years old. It is Hyundai Grand i10 and still being used by dad.

I handed it over to my dad when it had clocked a little over 30K Kms and now it has clocked over 45K Kilometres, relatively less in the past 4 years since I bought its stablemate, MSIL Vitara Brezza which incidentally crossed 40K this month.

We have had amazing road trips with both of them and both are running without any hassle whatsoever

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

I have had quite a few cars earlier on - the humble Nano, a wonderful Santro that I drove with my family from Pune to Bengaluru and drove alone from Bengaluru to Trivandrum to Chennai () and the reliable i10- all passed down the family. My father had a thing for Hyundai's!

My first car with my own money is my present ride - the Sonet GTX+ bought at 29. I have had it for about 16 months and have just crossed 19k kms .

Well, there is a snag. I got a car from the company when i was 32 years old. While a strict interpretation of the rule, would disqualify me- but hey : it is a part of the CTC and hence my own money? On a similar note, all the cars in my other jobs were bought by the company and i bought my first car with my tax paid money when i was 40 and the next one after i retired at 60.

Sadly, no pictures but i do have a review (in T-BHP) on the GLE Review (Ownership Review: Mercedes-Benz GLE 250D 4MATIC)that i bought in 2017. Hope that takes me off from the dog house?

My First Car bought with my own money when I was 27 - a pre-owned Fiat Linea Tjet. MY2013 Bought home 11 Months and 57xx Kms old in 2014. God Bless the Fiat depreciation!

Here is a pic week after I bought it when I drove it down to office.

I have done 38xxx kms as of today.

Before the Linea there was an Alto Vxi 1.1 owned by the family(now sold) and my brother's Tata Manza which he still drives.

Cheers!

It also means you were successful and enthusiastic as well.

Because buying a car in those days was a luxury for most Indians. Most would consider buying a house or two before investing in a car.

It also means you did enjoy filling the tank in the lower 3 digit figures!

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

I bought my first vehicle when I was 26. It was a childhood dream come true.
Although I had to let her go a few years ago there are still very fond memories of the car.

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

Bought my first car (pre-owned) back in 2005 when I was in my early 20s. I say on my own because I paid the major share of the cost from my own savings (roommates contributed a bit) and the car was in my name.

Last picture taken of the car in 2011 before it was replaced by the Vento

It was a <10 year old M800 that was wonderfully maintained by an elderly family. Absolutely no idea how to evaluate a car (wasn't a member or aware of TBHP back then). The other alternative was to pick a pre-owned Opel Astra which looked and felt way more 'cool' to a 23 year old but sanity prevailed and we opted for the safer and reliable Maruti.

We did a lot with that car - took it across Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat and whatnot. It was basically the 'cool' option to a bunch of young testosterone-heavy 20+ year olds with bikes who would argue/cajole/negotiate to get the car on weekends to take their (girl)friends out. Had a whole lot of fun with that car over nearly a decade of ownership.

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

First car I bought with my own money was Maruti Zen Estilo LXi at the age of 33 in May 2009. It went out of Bengaluru only twice, first to Puducherry in September 2009 and second to Mysuru in May 2015. Special memory associated is that both our son and daughter came home in this car. I had exchanged the car (ODO 23K) with Mahindra TUV300 in December 2015.

After first service:

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

Maruti Swift Vxi M/T 1.3 Ltr petrol. Bought in mid 2005 when I was 28 years old.

It was purchased when it was newly launched and was part of the second lot of deliveries by Maruti - and by god, did it turn heads at the time. I had booked a Vxi ABS variant but the timelines for that were so elongated that I finally settled for taking delivery of the Vxi.

I absolutely LOVED that car. Tyres were upsized, custom alloys, lovingly installed music system (blaupunkt maybe or alpine something I can’t recall the names also anymore) with subwoofers at the back.

Despite upgrading to a new Civic A/T in 2009, I still regretted selling the Swift at the time (it was similar when I bought the 3GT in 2015 - I didn’t sell the Civic until a year or two after). Would have loved to keep the Swift if I could have convinced my mum to sell her then i10 instead but she wasn’t willing to let that go (found the Swift too big for her - ironically then went to buy a used Manual Accord & then AT City for herself which she would self drive. )

It was bought on loan and at the time, I could perhaps have bought an esteem or maybe even a new Baleno by pushing a bit but the Swift just looked like nothing else in the market at the time.

Unfortunately I just don’t have any pictures other than this lone pic. This pic too was heavily zoomed in so not very clear.

One thing I’m happy about. My personal car history has been Swift M/T, Civic A/T and BMW 3GT. Every one of these cars has been so special that despite the next car being significantly superior, the previous one has still been very hard to give up / give away. Says a lot for each of these cars in their own right.

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

All of 24 years, I had quit my first job to pursue higher studies. Out of job and going to study financial management, what do I do next? I buy a used car, my first one

I had some money as savings and from the final settlement that I received when I left the job. Used all my savings to buy my car which I drove for the next 6 years/75k kms. When I was looking for a new car, my dad offered to take this off my hold and hence, my first car is still with us.

Clicked last month when I was home and this was my preferred ride

Re: How old were you when you bought your first car with your own money?

I bought my first car about 17 yrs ago - a Maruti 800. It was the first car ever in my family. I was also probably the first to learn driving in the family. The excitement of unlocking that brand new car everyday, smelling those new interiors with plastic covers , taking in that powerful AC which was such a luxury to me those days, moving from bike parking the previous day to the car parking in my office the next day - Unforgettable!!

I was 26 when I got my first car: an electric blue Fiat Punto 1.4. 12 years and 160k kms later, she is still going strong and doing road trips across the country.

Here’s a pic from her initial years, this was in Ooty.

This one’s from a couple of months backs where she encountered her first snow in Narkanda.

Lovely thread GTO and same pinch. My first car with own money is a Honda Civic - Black. 1.8VMT
Bought it at the age of 32 and I am still keeping it - have no plans to sell. Somehow love the steering, looks and high-rev engine are something I still cherish. And what a reliable and cool car it is.
