Hi, from your signature, I see that you do have a penchant for forgotten or unique luxury Indian cars from the 80s and 90s! I guess the one car missing from your collection is the Rover Montero!

Yes. You are right. Rover Montego design not impressed me much. Even I went and seen Rover Montego to buy and restore. But the car was in very bad shape and soucing spares also not so easy and I am running sort of parking space for my cars and bikes. So I decided to not added one more car in my collection.

Re: The story of the Standard 2000. 1985-1988

A reasonably tidy 2000 sitting outside a garage that I came across last week.
I had guessed that
1) going by the recent regn. (Guntoor) this car originally came from Madras.
2) It would've been Dieselised

And later checked the RTO website where I found the records online (possible usually for recent regns. ) and both my guesses were right!

The previous regn. was TMH ****.

Re: The story of the Standard 2000. 1985-1988

Some Standard Motors (SMPIL) nostalgia :

A rare Standard 2000 advertisement from Indian Auto Journal of Dec 1986

News in Indian Auto Journal about the ailing SMPIL in January 1989 (when nails to its coffin were being hammered one by one)
The amounts in Indian Rupees in the news item seem so paltry by today's standards.

Re: The story of the Standard 2000. 1985-1988

We had ours delivered in Aug 1986! I have some nice memories in this car, blue with nice grey interior and nifty woodgrain in interior. With all her faults and 6 kmpl we still loved her to death. Nothing could beat the suspension ride and other creature comforts. She looked hot where ever she went. Finally was sold for a joke in 1989 after putting some 60k km's on her with one failed power steering incident and the engine unable to last, needed a premature rebuild at 40k km. But all an all a super riding and driving car

Rover V8 - Part availability - Similar to Standard 2000

Hello ,

I have got a Rover V8 3500 . This is a car similar to Standard 2000 from the exterior. Check http://carsdata.net/Other/Rover-SD1.html for more details. I need a lot of external spares and also internal trim spares for the same.

Do any one you know where I can get the spares of Standard 2000 in India. I can import the spares from UK but it is an expensive proposition. I am checking if I can get it in India.

The Engine , gear box and other mechanical stuff are in good condition and only require a overhaul . But exteriors are not in good shape.

I need the Front indicators , Fan cowl , The front skirt where fog lamps are fitted , the under body cowl , door handles etc. If possible I also need the windshields .

Any help is highly appreciated

Re: The story of the Standard 2000. 1985-1988

A very rare advertisement of the Standard 2000, that had appeared in an India Today issue in 1985 - may be one of the earliest advertisements for this car.

^^ Standard 2000 in the 80s - "...nothing less will do."

Fast Forward >> to the 21st century, mid-2000s, the Mahindra Scorpio gets "Nothing Else Will Do."

I know it's but that's the first thing the above ad reminded me of!

Re: The story of the Standard 2000. 1985-1988

The Standard 2000 is featured here in the list of motor vehicles available in our market during November 1987. The price of the Standard 2000 is
Rs 206,352=24 paise (ex-showroom, Pune) - the costliest automobile in the list.

Re: The story of the Standard 2000. 1985-1988

The Standard 2000 was clearly ahead of its times, was a pioneer vehicle in every sort when it was introduced. I still remember, I was in school then and the impact it had on us kids. I had this class-mate who swore that when he 'grew-up' he would buy the Standard 2000. I never saw one in real life, had to make do with glossy pictures from newspapers and magazines. Pity it did not sell, it was a luxury yatch on wheels

But for the front bumper, the car is quite well restored. Did you fit its original Vanguard engine?

Of all the cars of the 1980's, the Standard 2000 is almost impossible to find in today's traffic.
