Great restored car! The outcome has come out to be very good. It would be very nice of you if you can start a thread on her.

Re: The story of the Standard 2000. 1985-1988

Folks
A question. Assuming Standard 2000 had clicked, would STAMPRO have survived to this day with the market having opened up in 1991 putting an end to the Licence Raj system.
IMO i think it is yes. If you compare the trio (HM,STAMPRO and PAL), STAMPRO had variety in their portfolio unlike the other two. May be they would have roped in a foreign partner. Your say on this.
Gutted to see the company no longer in existence.

Re: The story of the Standard 2000. 1985-1988

My Dad owned this car for 4 years during the early 2000s in Hyderabad. We enjoyed the car and it was a sort of head turner on the roads. Will pen down some memories of this beautiful car sometime.

Re: The story of the Standard 2000. 1985-1988

I just across this rare picture of Rover SD1 (UK Police car variant) being checked out by then Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi at the 1986 Auto Show in New Delhi. I think this was around the time it's Indian variant Standard 2000 was launched. Photo copyright rests with respective owner.

Re: The story of the Standard 2000. 1985-1988

What blasphemy . Standard actually planned to dieselize the 2000. Thank God this jugaad never saw the light of day (although there were plenty of conversions by owners).

While browsing through some old issues of Auto India magazine (from the 90s) I came across this ad for the same car.

Below are a few screenshots that I managed from Youtube (Sorry for the bad quality).

Reviving a very old thread. I was curious about the Standard 2000 and found this on Olx. Is this the same car? The Engine has been switched with the one described in the post quoted above.

Why does this petrol engine sound like a diesel Mahindra Bolero? Is this how this engine sounded when new?

Maybe it IS a diesel engine?

The idling is unmistakably diesel.

In the video, There is a carburetor whose butterfly is opening and closing while being revved!

By the way, this is actually how the engine sounded even when brand new!!

This and the Original Contessa (till the 1.8GL came in) were pretty unrefined by even the standards then.

The contessa 1.8 was anything but unrefined. Save for the loud cooling fan, the engine was smooth as silk and actually quite a scorcher. It pulled effortlessly to 100kmph in second gear all the way up to 160.

Please read my quote properly, I wasn't talking about the 1.8 (btw when it was launched people used to call it its full name, the Contessa Classic 1.8GL)
