Re: What cost-cutting bothers you in your current car?

Hyundai Grand i10 Nios

Cost cutting galore, the most bothersome being:
1. No anti-theft security system, and worse, a useless and horrendously loud lock-unlock honk that cannot be turned off.
2. No backlight for the power window controls on the doorpads. Even after 1.5 years of living with the car, I struggle to find the right button in the dark.
3. Integrated front seat headrests. Good enough for my height, but still look cheap on an otherwise premium interior.

Re: What cost-cutting bothers you in your current car?

My Hyundai Alcazar 2022 Signature - O Variant 6 Str.

1) No Rain sensing wipers and cheap quality wipers.
2) No Request sensor on left side door.
3) No illuminated/backlit switches for opening and closing windows on driver's side - this is my most hated gripe on Hyundai cars, which is a very obvious example of cost cutting that can be easily rectified at practically no cost to them. I feel it is a safety issue, because sometimes needing to open or shut windows while driving during night times needs me to fumble with the buttons for a few seconds more than I would have liked.
4) No full sized spare wheel - but this is now true for almost all cars.

Re: What cost-cutting bothers you in your current car?

2015 Ford Fiesta

For car that had almost all the bells and whistles it’s puzzling that they left the auto door lock out of list of features.

Also the most useless and irritating feature is the voice command feature of Sync by Microsoft. It’s unresponsive, slow and chunky.

Re: What cost-cutting bothers you in your current car?

I have a 2020 Skoda Karoq. Being a CBU, it has all the things covered but these things bother me the most:

1. Absence of ambient light strips at the rear. When the car has ambient lighting at the front, this feels like a huge omission. Will plan to install it.

2. Absence of powered tailgate - Close to 30L and no powered boot.

3. Wireless charger

All these are offered abroad on the Karoq but didn’t make their way to India.

2019 Santro Sportz
Hyundai has given the steering without having a chrome Hyundai logo. It feels so cheap. I don't know how much they saved by doing so but this is certainly the worst cost cutting in my opinion.

Re: What cost-cutting bothers you in your current car?

Tata Harrier - Tata went and procured a great engine from Fiat, great gearbox from Hyundai, great music system from JBL. But why go cheap on the infotainment system? It’s a major let us down from what’s a great product otherwise.

Re: What cost-cutting bothers you in your current car?

Interesting thread.

1) BMW 3GT: No Keyless entry, No cruise control.

2) Datsun Redi Go: Where do I start? No Intermittent wipers, Only one wiper blade which leaves 20 % driver vision impaired. No sound deadening, Two tiny speakers in the front door, No central locking, There is literally ONE Keyhole in the car. Only one way to enter inside. Non self adjusting rear seatbelts and a dashboard whose connecting bolts broke off twice!

Re: What cost-cutting bothers you in your current car?

BMW530D LCI M-Sport

1. 360 Degree Camera: Have my heart in my mouth most of the time on the narrow roads in Kerala.
2. No Auto dimming on the passenger side mirror.
3. Would have loved it if Apple Car play would stream GMaps to the HUD. Now its only AppleMaps or the inbuilt navigation system which sucks.

Honda Brio VX-AT: No auto door lock

Re: What cost-cutting bothers you in your current car?

Tata Hexa XTA. Quite a long list:-
  • engine cover deleted.
  • Puddle lamps deleted in newer models.
  • Roof rails deleted.
  • 19 inch alloy wheels deleted(though 17 inch is better for Indian roads).
  • Boot lamp deleted
  • Third row 12V socket deleted.
  • Adaptive guidelines(available on XT)
  • Glovebox lamp
This list goes even longer in the lower variants.
I don't know How much did Tata save on these feature deletions.

a. Lack of factory fit Centre Armrest with storage
b. Lack of good under thigh support in the seats.
c. Lack of a simple and easily managed rear seat tumble fold mechanism.
d. Lack of sensible and creative storage spaces in the vehicle.
e. Poor Interior space design.
f. Lack of rear washer and wiper
g. Lack of removable and refixable mid section panel in the front cabin roof.
h. Lack of seat height adjustment capability in the front passenger seat.
i. No headlamp washers
j. Lack of factory fit rear reverse camera and front parking sensors.
Have a Mahindra Marazzo and simply copying many of the above. Not all maybe cost-cutting though.
a. Poorly designed and not very robust factory fit Centre Armrest
b. Lack of good under thigh support in the seats esp driver seat - had to get additional padding done.
c. Lack of sensible and creative storage spaces in the vehicle esp rear door pockets that can hold virtually nothing and can not be accessed when doors are closed. I.e. basically useless
d. Poor quality interior esp hard plastics everywhere
e. No keyless entry / start stop / auto-ivrm. Actually ivrm is so small that you have to adjust it with precision for visibility
f. Black hard plastic on the front reflects like crazy - drops visibility in bright sun by a few notches when you are driving under a canopy of trees. Anyone else noticed this??
g. Only lap belt for rear middle passenger
h. No AT even for 19L OTR.

Otherwise its a great car:
a. Solid NVH, very quiet inside
b. Oodles of space inside
c. Furgal engine for a turbo diesel
d. Buttons for everything except AV system
e. Even has cornering lights that illuminate well as you turn into a corner!

What cost-cutting bothers you in your current car?-20230129_113211.jpg

Dzire LXI Cheap instrument cluster
I have bought this car in Nov 2022. Being bought a basic model, it has some low cost parts such as front seats with fixed head restraints (it is good in functionality, so not much complaints).
But the instrument cluster is really cheap to look at and for an owner who is supposed to be all time driver of this car, this always reminds me the most prominent cost cutting in this car.

Got the yellow cabin lights changed to LED, source Amazon. Works like a charm.
Wireless Android Auto works in the sportz model with a few bugs.
Armrest in front is an ergonomic disaster.
Non adjustable headrest on rear seat. And no armrest (my Dzire VDI had both)

Re: What cost-cutting bothers you in your current car?

Skoda Fabia 1.2 TDI (2013): While the product itself was leagues ahead of the competition in terms of build quality, fit and finish, plastic quality there were some hopeless cost cutting works across the car. They were just too glaring omissions for a ₹8 lakh OTR car.
  1. No audio system! (yes you read it right) - only Skoda can do this to Indians
  2. Third rate headlights - while projectors were offered in the first iteration, after the facelift Skoda did this (regular halogen) and it hampered visibility and how!
  3. Manual adjusting mirror - you were taken back to yesteryears with rotary knobs. Atleast electric adjustment should been offered. One had to be good with gymnastics to adjust the left mirror
  4. No fog lights, rear wiper and rear defogger - seriously this was a big turn off and I repented buying this variant

Re: What cost-cutting bothers you in your current car?

2017 Hyundai Grand i10 1.2 Asta MT

Having owned the 2016 pre-facelift Grand i10 as well, I was surprised to see the lack of a request sensor on the passenger door handle. The pre-facelift model came with request sensors on both front doors.

Hyundai also decided to not offer an auto lock, one has to manually lock the doors.

Re: What cost-cutting bothers you in your current car?

Two examples from two opposite ends of engg/design philosophies - Hyundai and Fiat. As different as chalk and cheese.

1) Hyundai Creta/Alcazar etc don't have backlighting on the door buttons.Yet they have sunroofs, gizmo-filled to the brim, air purifiers and what not..
2) Fiat cars have literally no storage options other than one single rear AC vent bottle holder. Yet even from 2009, they have auto headlamps , auto wipers, cruise control etc.

What paradoxes each of these are.
I own one of the above paradoxes.
