Strangely enough, I don't recollect selling any car because of problems. If it suffered from unreliability, we fixed it and used it for over a lakh kms anyways.

Reasons for sale in time-descending order:

'03 OHC Vtec : Run 70,000 kms, but was in top shape. Never had a break down. Quick, FE and practical. Just after selling it, new owner dyno'ed her for 106 BHP at the wheels! Talk about a healthy engine. Created a thread on 6 lakh rupee enthusiast cars, got tempted myself as the OP, sold the OHC for a used Civic earlier this year.

'96 Esteem : Sold in 2006. Had 10 years and anywhere between 1,75,000 - 2,00,000 kms on the clock. Useable life pretty much done at that point. Was the first car I owned that was F-A-S-T for its time.

'02 Mercedes C180 : Not exactly sold, but Mercedes bought it back from me in 2005. Was a lemon. Those 30,000 odd kms had more than their share of painful moments.

'00 Mitsubishi Lancer : Family was bigger at the time = heavy running. Covered over 1.0 lakh kms in 3.xx years! I wasn't around to maintain it, family procrastinated. Never saw her go, but was told she felt really old.

'95 Maruti Zen : Delightful li'l hatch, especially for the time. Loved to embarass snooty Maruti 1000s in it. Used for over a lakh kms and sold off in 2000. Sure was overpriced though. See what Rs. 4.25 lakhs can buy you now. If we bring inflation into the picture, Maruti was charging today's 10 lakh rupees!

'93 Padmini Diesel : One of my favourites. Absolute workhorse and stupendous reliability. Used for well past its life (well over 1.5 lakh kms), and then sold off to a taxi chap.

'92 Premier 118NE : Worst car I've ever owned. Felt like it was put together by the local cobbler. Useless car, horrendous reliability...but we still used it for 5 - 6 years and over a lakh kms before selling off. This car also taught me all about Pioneer stereos, what backseats are really meant for (), how to maintain a good rapport with all the neighbourhood mechanics, every conceivable solution to overheating, and why NOT to get after-market LPG conversions.

P.S. : You guys do know there's one particular car thats not going on the block...like anytime, right?

Why? What happened? Did the whole car go up in a huge ball of fire?

Luckily not . But everything else that could possibly go wrong did. Leaks, heavy smell in the cabin, starting problems, acceleration issues. I remember a time that she had trouble climbing the Peddar road bridge

IIRC, we threw the system out the same year as it was installed.

Never got a chance to sell a car yet since my Palio is the first ride owned by me (not family) and never got bored of driving her. She is now 6 years and just 37K odd Not sure whether I would ever part with it in near future. If at all I decide for another car, it would be becoz of the petrol prices to go for a more fuel efficient diesel ride.

But yes i have an experience of parting with my beloved 1983 Bull. this was due to the low FE and expensive maintenence which made my parents ferocious .

This the thumb rule for the replacement of 'sarkari' vehicle. For once seems to make sense.

I bought my Dad's M800 off him in May 2006. It was a 1998 carburetted model which had done 70k kms by that time. I sold it last month (April 8 to be precise) to Maruti True Value. The odo read a little over 89k kms.

It wasn't a heavily used car by any means (89k kms overall in 11y 9m and only 19k kms under my care in 3y 10m) but it had begun to show its age. Every time the car was serviced there would be some part that needed replacement. The plan was to keep it till 2011 but I sold it fearing reliability problems after Mithra said the engine was beginning to show signs of weakness and *might* need a re-bore. I saw no sense in investing that kind of effort for a car that I would keep for one year at the most, and I didn't want to sell it (directly at least) to an unsuspecting buyer, hence Maruti True Value.

Regards,
Spadix

-sold my 2001 Indica V2 as it did 100000+kms and was too old
-sold 2004 Indica V2 (purchased after the 2001) since engine gave sudden problem and had to spend 36+2 brand new tyres since the michelin cracked when it was in standstill in garage for almost a month.
Even after spending 36 engine was not upto the mark ( i was not convinced) so SOLD IT !!

My next selling or rather pushing my dad to sell is 1999 SANTRO done 215000+kms

Sold my '94 Toyota Corolla and wife's '93 Honda Civic in '03 after a large no. of miles clocked up on them - and we were moving to India.

Sold my '04 Palio 1.9 D in '09 after giving up the battle trying to keep it in a running condition and realizing weekends with family were a distant memory due to my having to take it to the mechanic every Sat/Sun. Lesson Learnt - Family more important than a white elephant - oops Palio 1.9D.

Maruti omni 1988-1994 - was my first baby, kept it shining like new, the paint had a glow from so many layers of Turtle wax. It had an Italian pull-out cassette-radio that I brought from a junk-yard in Europe for nothing, with the sweetest sound you ever heard. Sold it on advice from my accountant, and wept for a few nights!
Maruti Omni 1994--2000. Amazing difference in quality from the earlier one, this one was in the garage every so often, the finish was far worse, only advantage was my kids loved going for holidays in it. SOld on advice from the accountant.
Ford Escort diesel 2000-2005 - Bought used, very comfortable car, gave me that "big car" feeling, and instant respect from snooty hotel valets. Sold as the car was costing an arm and a leg in maintenance. Bought the Baleno after joining this forum, my mid-life crisis car!
