Re: Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn arrested in Tokyo. EDIT: Carlos escapes from Japan!

Fugitive auto executive Carlos Ghosn settles scores in new French book.

Quote:
Executive-turned-international fugitive Carlos Ghosn is gunning for revenge in a new book published this week about the events surrounding his November 2018 arrest in Tokyo, 130-day imprisonment and dramatic escape to Lebanon.

The former high-flying chairman of Nissan Motor Co. and Renault SA, who has denied financial misconduct charges, has long said he was set up to prevent deeper integration between the two automakers, part of a three-way alliance with Mitsubishi Motors Corp. Ghosn remains holed up in Beirut after jumping bail in December and fleeing Tokyo with the help of a former Green Beret, who with his son is now facing extradition to Japan from the U.S.

Re: Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn arrested in Tokyo. EDIT: Carlos escapes from Japan!

Carlos Ghosn receives support from the United Nations for his four arrests in Japan.

U.N. says former Nissan head Carlos Ghosn owed 'compensation' for arrest, detention.

The U.N. panel said it would refer Ghosn's case to its rapporteur on torture and degrading treatment.

Added trouble for Carlos Ghosn:

Carlos Ghosn Investigated by France Over Possible Tax Evasion.

- Authorities examine ex-CEO’s residency over three-year period
- Newspaper reports that France seized EU13 million in assets

Quote:
Ghosn and French tax authorities have been discussing since the middle of last year whether the former chief executive officer should have been considered a French resident during 2016, 2017 and 2018. Ghosn declared in 2012 that he had moved to the Netherlands and was subsequently treated as a non-resident.

An almost detailed story about how Carlos escaped from Japan. Straight out of Hollywood script. Reminds me of the movie 'ARGO'. I'm sure there will be a movie made on his great escape.

US father - son due extradited to Japan for helping Carlos escape Japan.

The father apparently planned and executed the escape for a fee of $1.3 million.

Source.

Japan seems to be following up on this case unrelentingly.

Its surprising how fast they were extradited. We are still in the queue for Mallya, Nirav etc. Not to forget that US refused to extradite Coleman Headley to India on terrorism charges. Looks like there is one law for third world and another for developed world.

Re: Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn arrested in Tokyo. EDIT: Carlos escapes from Japan!

Trouble for Carlos Ghosn:

Ghosn gets $6 million bill as Nissan-Mitsubishi case backfires.

Quote:
Fugitive former car executive Carlos Ghosn suffered a setback on Thursday when a Dutch court ordered him to repay 5 million euros ($6.1 million) in wages to Nissan and Mitsubishi in a case he had brought.

The case, one of a series of legal battles involving one of the best known figures in the auto industry, centres around the Dutch-registered joint venture Nissan-Mitsubishi BV (NMBV), where Ghosn was ousted as chairman in 2019.

Ghosn claimed the Japanese companies violated Dutch labour laws when they dismissed him and had demanded compensation of 15 million euros for missed wages and severance payments.

But the district court in Amsterdam sided with the car companies, stating that Ghosn did not have a valid employment agreement with the joint venture, as it lacked the required consent of the boards of Nissan and Mitsubishi.
Quote:
The court found that Ghosn had wrongfully determined his own salary and sign-on bonus at NMBV, and that the board member who had signed his employment contract at the joint venture on behalf of the car companies did not have the power to do so.

Father And Son Plead Guilty To Helping Carlos Ghosn Escape From Japan.

Quote:
The two men who orchestrated Carlos Ghosn’s escape from Japan have pleaded guilty to charges in Japan.

United States Army Special Forces veteran Michael Taylor and his son Peter were in court on Monday and asked by the presiding judge if there were any mistakes in the charges submitted by the Tokyo Prosecutors’ Office. Both said no.

Quote:
After Japanese authorities issued a warrant for the arrest of the Taylors in January 2020, Michael Taylor asked Ghosn for help with legal expenses. Ghosn agreed and sent $500,000 worth of bitcoin from his son’s account to an account owned by Peter Taylor.
The Taylors face up to three years in prison.

Re: Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn arrested in Tokyo. EDIT: Carlos escapes from Japan!

Now with the father-son arrest in the US and deportation to Japan (J for Japan and J for Jail) and revelation of the US $ 1.3 million payout by Ghosn for the "Great Xmas Escape 2019" to this duo, it appears that everyone else who is connected with this voyage to freedom for Ghosn, is either under trial or arrest. This includes the two pilots and the private jet company executive who were also convicted by a Turkish Court.

Ghosn the main character, is the only person who still enjoys freedom ever since, despite the criminal cases against him in Japan.

Re: Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn arrested in Tokyo. EDIT: Carlos escapes from Japan!

The Great Escape of 2019 from the horse's mouth as revealed to BBC News. More funny as it is classed by BBC as Business News. Fleeing arrest is business :-

Then CEO of a three way alliance between Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi as he calls himself, he had devised his cost cutting measures at Nissan that saved the company and had made him a respectable and recognisable figure. Renault then still owned 43 % of Nissan and the latter perhaps feared cannibalisation. Nissan was fighting back against the increasing influence of Renault. From his revelations it is apparent that Renault was the unliked and unwanted entity for its increasingly role of "Big Brother" for Nissan.

Recollecting his arrest at Tokyo airport, three years ago he says "Its like you're being hit by a bus or something really very traumatic happened to you. The only memory I have is shock, frozen trauma." He was taken to the Tokyo Detention Centre, given prison clothes and confined to a cell. He had no watch, no computer, no telephone, no access to news and no pen-nothing, as he revealed.

Spending long periods of custody in jail or under house arrest after getting bail for more than a year, it was common knowledge that he faced 15 years in prison if convicted, as the conviction rate in Japan is 99.4 %. To add salt to the injuries, he was told that he could not have any contact with his wife Carole and thats when the "Clever and Scheming Carlos" took over the power of decision making for Carols Ghosn. The masterplan took care of the fact that he could not reveal his face then anywhere in Japan. A box or luggage would be the better way to escape. A large box that would normally contain musical instruments would work well ! And there were a lot of concerts in Japan then.

What began as a normal day with normal clothes, normal attitude and a normal walk was to see a sudden change and become a D-day for him. He swapped his formal suit for jeans and trainers. He travelled by bullet train from Tokyo to Osaka where a jet was awaiting those boxes at the airport. Reaching a hotel the boxes for Ghosn at a hotel became the centre-piece of all action. Transported from the hotel to the airport by two men (Dad and son Michael and Peter Taylor, who are now extradited from the US to Japan, facing three years jail) by two men posing as musicians, Ghosn was in the box for around an hour and a half. He felt like it was one year and a half ! The private jet took off at night and the Japanese believed musical instruments and musicians had flown out. Travelling throughout the night and free now Ghosn's plane was swapped after it landed in Turkey. He landed at Beirut airport in the morning in another plane.

He says that he feels sorry for the people in Japan who are victims of the hostage justice system. Carols Ghosn as the BBC report puts it "lived more like a head of state than a head of industry." Ghosn also says that his escape-caper is worthy of becoming a Hollywood film.

BBC 4 will feature 'The Last Flight' on BBC 4 on 14.07.2021. The full story here:-

Carlos Ghosn: Father and son sentenced for helping ex-Nissan boss escape.

Quote:
The Tokyo court sentenced US Special Forces veteran Michael Taylor to two years in prison.

His son Peter was handed a term of one year and eight months.

The pair were extradited from the US over claims they smuggled Mr Ghosn out of Japan in a luggage box on a private jet as he awaited trial.

Japanese prosecutors had been seeking prison terms of two years and 10 months for Michael Taylor and two years and six months for Peter.

Re: Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn arrested in Tokyo. EDIT: Carlos escapes from Japan!

If the father and son duo indeed gets out of jail in two years, then it is a well-played game by the duo. They got a truckload of money for two years of the sentence. At least a small part of that money will be saved at a place where the US does not have jurisdiction. Ghosn got saved from 15 years or even a lifelong sentence. It is very much possible that this prison sentence was anticipated and the money was negotiated including this possible few years of the sentence if caught.

Nissan ex-chair Ghosn set to fight on restoring reputation.

Quote:
“I’m going to be there. I’m going to defend my rights as long as I have the energy to do it,” Ghosn, 67, said via Zoom from his home in Beirut. His story is “far from finished,” he said.
Quote:
Ghosn said he is trying to get Interpol to drop its red flag, which requests police worldwide to seek out and arrest persons wanted for prosecution or to serve a sentence.
