Re: The 2014 F1 Season

Power unit penalties to shape second half of season

Each power unit is defined as six different components:
the internal combustion engine (ICE),
the Motor Generator Unit-Kinetic (MGU-K),
the Motor Generator Unit-Heat (MGU-H),
the energy store (ES),
turbocharger (TC) and
control electronics (CE). Each driver is allocated five of each per season.

Following is the current standing of each driver. With ten races remaining, half the field are already on their last or penultimate example of at least one power unit component.

Power unit penalties ‘carry over’
A driver will receive a ten-place grid penalty the first time they use a sixth power unit component. On any further occasion that driver uses a sixth component they will receive a further five-place grid penalty. This pattern repeats for a seventh power unit component and so on.

On top of that, these sanctions work differently to other grid penalties in F1. Normally there is no consequence if a driver cannot serve their full grid penalty at a race – for example, if they have qualified last and receive a five-place penalty. However penalties relating to power unit components can be carried over to the next race.

For example, If a driver qualifies 20th and receives a five-place grid penalty due to a power unit component change, they would be moved back to 22nd and carry a three-place penalty into the next race.

These new penalties can only be carried over once, so if this driver were to qualify last for the following race, their three-place penalty would not carry over to the next round. Note this only applies to the change of power unit components, not gearboxes, the rules for which are unchanged.

As in Cricket:

Form is temporary, Class is permanent.

The Iceman is a class act.

Re: The 2014 F1 Season

Iceman should avoid letting other drivers pass on the inside and outside. He got banged up quite badly last weekend. (Pardon the pun)

He looks a bit grey this year no doubt in my mind. N its taken him 10 races so far and he still hasnt found his sweet spot. A certain tiny Brazilian must be laughing and also thanking his stars.

Re: The 2014 F1 Season

There appear to be 2 drivers on the grid who seem to extract the maximum from the car no matter whether it suits their driving style or not - Alonso & Hamilton. Ricciardo could be the 3rd one as he's the one who's pushed out Vettel from that group (at least for me). The rest (Kimi, Button) require the car to suit their driving style before they can max it (though when it suits them, they are as quick as anyone out there). The new guns (some not as new anymore but still without a top drive - Hulk) need to prove a lot before they can get into that category.

Mercedes trying to make it 2 German drivers?

Hamilton dismisses rumours linking Vettel with Mercedes F1 team

Hope this is just Marko going bonkers, else it will be a shame!

Re: The 2014 F1 Season

Hamilton takes the title this year, leaves to Red Bull. Vettel joins Mercedes for all German everything. Alonso moves to Mclaren Honda for 2015, im breathing a sigh of relief as im typing this. Mclaren have peter prodromou joining them from Red Bull, a major boost ! Expect epic battles in 2015 or 2016, Alonso vs Hamilton vs Vettel vs Rosberg with Ricciardo/Kimi joining in (maybe?). Kimi stays in Ferrari. Title for Alonso/Mclaren-Honda in 2016 !!

In one line, none of it is likely to happen except Peter's move

What sort of paint thinner were you sniffing when you came up with that prediction
Jokes aside, if what you've predicted does happen and provided other teams can match the pace of the leaders in the forthcoming years, it should make F1 even more exciting!

I agree! Alonso might move, but which of the top teams have empty seats to take him. Rosberg, Hamilton aren't moving, neither are Bottas-Massa or Ricciardo-Vettel pairs. I am still having fingers crossed on how McLaren-Honda is going to workout in 2015. It will be a gamble for ALO whether he decides to stay in Ferrari or move to McLaren.

Yeah agree here. Vettel to Merc is just a rumour so LH's management doesnt ask for the moon in his contract terms.
McLaren will be too big a gamble, Ferrari are making enough changes to convince Alo to stay. Peter will take atleast 1.5 years to settle in, not that he can do wonders on his own. McLaren doesnt inspire much confidence, even with Honda's $100 million coming in.

But I am very excited to see how the battle of the engines shapes up in 2015.

And what the bloody hell!

Team bosses keen on success ballast for F1

Bernie has gone senile but I can't fathom why teams would agree with it??

May not be too far off the truth for 2016. I am not sure Alonso will be keen to go to McLaren for 2015 as no one has any idea how their engine is going to turn out. Alonso is already suffering from a poor engine this year. Also, 2015 is probably too early for Prodromou to make an impact. Kimi will probably retire after 2015.
