The line-up for the Formula 1 in-season test after the Hungarian Grand Prix may be starting to fall into place, but all eyes are on what Renault chooses to do about Robert Kubica.

The French car manufacturer is weighing up whether or not to give Kubica a first run in its 2017 F1 car to further evaluate if the Polish driver has the potential to make a grand prix comeback next year.

Kubica has impressed in two private tests he has done in a 2012 car so far, but Renault still wants to know more about how he will perform in contemporary machinery.

F1’s strict test rules means that opportunities to run Kubica in a current car are extremely limited – and are further complicated by the fact that he will not count as a rookie driver despite his years away from F1.

The FIA regulations demand that two of the four in-season test days are completed by drivers who have competed in no more than two grands prix. Kubica completed 76 races in his career for BMW Sauber and Renault.

With Renault having already run Nico Hulkenberg for one day in Bahrain, it faces a dilemma over whether to give Kubica an outing at the expense of current driver Jolyon Palmer. F2 race winner Nicholas Latifi is set to run on the other day that Palmer or Kubica do not do.

The only other way that Renault could run Kubica would be in a totally separate acclimitisation test that is allowed in the rules if a team elects to substitute a driver.

Re: Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017

The 2 day test program after Hungarian GP was an opportunity for many young drivers as well as an old one aiming for a comeback.

Robert Cubica made his appearance on the second day driving for Renault factory team.

He even knocked down the Nico Hulkenberg board on his way out the first time.
Maybe there was a hidden message that he was trying to give there.

The timings:

The teams tested lots of new parts that they would introduce in the second half of the season.
Probably these are going to be the last batch of parts for this year as their attention would shift to the 2018 challenger.

Re: Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017

Latest rumours are that Torro Rosso will be running Honda power from next season onwards, freeing Carlos Sainz to join the factory Renault outfit from the next race of this season as a sweetener to get out of the Renault deal early. In return Gasly is likely to slot in at Sainz's slot. This crucially opens up a Renault engine to go into the back of the Mclaren for next season, with Palmer being shown the back door. Afraid no place for old Robert under such an arrangement.

Lord only knows how complex the wrangling must've been between Helmut, Cyril, Christian, Zak and Hasegawa. I think it'll be a good deal for everyone.

Renault keeps their supply output fulfilled. Mclaren get rid of Honda, consequences be damned. Honda are able to stay in the sport, running in a much more low profile setting. Red Bull can also bring the Honda engine up to speed in their B-spec team, with the eventual goal of having a much more permissive engine partner to run in the factory squad once the Honda PU reaches some level of competitive parity. Carlos is freed from the dead end Torro Rosso seat to join a factory team and test his mettle towards becoming a front running driver.

Helmut gets an empty seat to promote the next young Bull in their young driver programme. Who knows, might even go the whole hog and get rid of the Torpedo himself for a whole new Torro Rosso line up, if not now, but by the start of the next season.

Yeah. Ends the misery for Daniil Kvyat. A potentially good Russian youngster who couldn't live up to the expectations. His days were numbered the moment he was demoted from RBR last year. Should have ended right there. Guess they didn't find any suitable replacement for STR till now.

Re: Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017

Marcin Budkowski, Ex-FIA technical chief joins Renault as director soon.

He has been a McLaren man for long.
Now Renault seems to be on a rise after this move.

It looks like Goodbye Jolyon. Carlos Sainz Jr will replace him from Austin and Kvyat returns to Toro Rosso to partner Gasly.

This also means that Gasly cannot compete in the Super formula finale at Suzuka as it clashes with Austin GP

Re: Formula 1 - Silly Season, 2017

Looks like forum members have given up on the season. No separate thread on U.S Grand Prix.
Meanwhile Hamilton looked supreme all weekend, took his 72nd pole. Even after beating Hamilton in the first corner, it wasn't enough for Vettel. Max climbed all the way from 16 th to take final podium place, only to denied, imposing 5 second penalty on him. P3 for Kimi. Vettel an Max taking different strategies than Hamilton made the race a little interesting. Bottas was clearly struggling ending up P5.

Mercedes wrapped up constructors championship.
Kudos to the team.

Seriously!! Watching re-run on TV now. Seems like a good crowd. Hamilton only needs to finish the remaining races to claim his championship.

Though not upto par of the Mercedes, the redbulls seem very fast!
Good job by the Force Indias in finishing again within points.
