Hi Condor ,

May I ask you if you agree with SuMo's claim to touch speed of 160 kmph in his Victa ?From your expierence with your Victa do you think this speed is acheivable ?

hi Koushik,

No, I dont. The rated speed is only 125 Kmph. We have the same model, and the Sumo TCIC cannot do 160. I have done an indicated 130 at full throttle, but we need to remember that the speedo's are calibrated upwards of actual speeds.

The NA Victa is rated to do only 110 (IIRC).

But to be fair, an earlier test report by an auto mag gave the speedo error for the Victa to be very low - about 3-4% only.

My opinion:I do not know about the calibration in my Victa IDI, but have done speeds upwards of 135 kmph (flat or slight gradient, less-windy day). There probably was scope for a few kms more, but the bounce due to composite leafs kept me edgy.

Yes Condor I agree with you.I have gone through the specifications of Victa GX 2005 .It is indirect injection 2 L diesel engine that was earlier used in Safari. The power output of 90 PS and 190 Nm torque sounds good on paper. This is a high rpm engine may be good for Safari but you have rightly mentioned that it could be slightly underpowered for Sumo. From your posts it is evident that you have nicely maintained it.It has a wheelbase of 2400 mm but now all Sumos are with 2025 mm wheelbase.

My friend had a Safari with this engine but after 120000 kms it became extremely expensive to maintain. He sold it out for just about a lakh rupees! I am sure you will be delighted with pleasent surprise if you take test drive of BSIV Gold.We are very much eager to hear from you.

Koushik

Thanks, Koushik. I have managed to take care of the Sumo, and have been lucky with T.A.S.S too.

A small correction there - the WB is now mentioned as 2425 mm, and not 2025 mm. There is an increase of 25 from before.

From the looks of it - specs, review by others, it will be a fair guess that I will be happy with the Gold. Will try for a TD, but cant say when (a little busy with my (Arctic) Silver at the moment .

@Synchro, calibration "error" is always there. Vehicles are over-calibrated to some extent. Some more than others. Some vehicles on Indian roads are reported with errors of 7-8% (as compared on a GPS).

Btw, did you try the plug-work I had asked you for ? Do let us know.

@ Condor, the construction seems to be slightly different here, compared to your Victa.

@Synchromesh, thanks !

So that's one more example of small changes that TML keeps making to their vehicles, but do not always advertise this. From what I have seen, such changes are not limited to only small stuff, but extend to other parts of the car too.

77 months / 71650km, Clutch cylinders replaced

Mid June 2012: 77 months, 71650 km

A few months of low usage, due to one DIY I was doing. The Sumo was often parked for extended periods at home, and once at Prerana, Hosur Road.

This also caused the battery to die out twice, but a fresh charge at the Exide outlet has kept it going. I was afraid that that two discharges would have weakened the 2 year old Bosch Silver battery, but so far the battery is holding. Apparently, the trick is to run the engine at idle for about 15-20 min a week if no running is being done.

But all that's another story .. It will take lot of time to narrate, just as it took about 5 months of free time to cover all that has been done so far

-----------------------

The clutch had been feeling soft for some time now. I had to often give some acclerator input along with releasing the clutch to get the Sumo moving in first. Of late, it was very apparent on inclines, when it was behaving almost like a petrol. On Monday, the clutch play increased to almost 50%, and on Tuesday morning, I was not able to move the Sumo in first - it used to stall, like it would if I were to try moving in 3rd instead of 1st.

Got it checked at Prerana, Hosur Road. Clutch Master Cyl required replacement.

Truckin'.. A journey of 7 years, 5 months & 78300 km with the Sumo Victa GX Turbo-clutchcyl.jpg

Cost:
Master Cyl: 1145 + tax
Slave Cyl: 844 + tax
Labor: 500

Also replaced:
the OE accelerator cable: 210 + tax
Labor: 150

Total bill, including miscellaneous items: Rs 3454/-

A/c cooling checked, since cooling was low. This has been a small niggle. Hope it holds this time.

Get yourself a battery tender or battery charger. Don't waste fuel to charge it. I have 2 cars and experience the same issue.

Sumo's back to it's old self, to a large extent. The clutch feels good again, and the Sumo does not need accelerator when I engage 1st.

@SuMo, where are the pics ? Good to see you crossing the 1Lakh mark. I am still at 72k.

The Victa name may be there till the old IDI engine is there. Let's see how it goes. But the N/A IDI is quite old now. Even the cabs are now getting either the DI Turbo 3L, or the new 3L CR engine.

Sumo is now offered with either 3000 CC 4SP TCIC or more powerful CR4 engine. May I know what is the maximum speed ever recorded in your SUMO.
