What about the total maintainance costs, if compared with petrol Swift. Confused between the petrol and diesel as the vehicle would be used for only 10- 15 kms per day.

Panks15,

:OT but just answering your qn.

Based on my experience so far here are the main areas where the diesel maintenance runs more that the petrol

1. Air filter - ~400/- for diesel compared to 90/- for petrol. Also change interval is 20k for diesel as opposed to 40k for petrol
2. Diesel filter - ~1000 for diesel compared to ~400 for petrol. I think the change intervals are also same.
3. Oil filter - ~300/- for diesel compared to ~100 for petrol. Change intervals are the same.

All in all there is a ~1500/- difference in the cost for a standard 20k service between a diesel and petrol Swift.

I think a diesel would make financial sense (for car nuts like us this often is something that have a lower priority) if you cover over 1500kms per month. This is expecially true if it is an all cash buy. Especially with todays interest rates you might be able to pay for the extra petrol costs with the interest of the extra money forked out for the diesel. If financed you can consider the extra EMI and decide.

Driving exp - well thats a different ball game ain't it :D. Plenty of post abt that already so me not adding more.

Drive on,
Shibu.

ehm. who said petrol air filter replacement is at 40k?? its same at 20k for all MUL vehicles, and for your information almost all dealership will try to push for a change every 10k kms thanks to our driving environment.

Yes parts are lil more costly but still doesnt burn a hole in ones wallet week after week (petrol bunk)!

The price difference and interest rates all has been discussed to death, use search to get more info.

Where did u get those prices from?

Swift P
Air Filter - Rs 190
Time interval (Recommended) - 20k kms but it is mostly replaced @ 10k kms here due to dusty conditions

Swift D
Air Filter - Rs 250

Jaggu, I left my Swift for it's 40 K service today morning. Told him to specifically check out the poor pickup, also told him that I suspected a very very dirty air filter, which could probably need cleaning.

However, the Service Advisor just called now to say that the clutch is nearing the end of it's life and so it's not able to take the load of the vehicle in the 2nd and 3rd gears. Does that make sense? My usuage has been almost 80% highway which is why I'm skeptcial, Is it normal to have the clutch changed at around this point? It would work out to approximately 7K, sounds expensive.

Any advice, guys.

Checked with Bimal over the weekend and they gave the clutch a clean chit.

Guys, could you please explain this test to me. This is what they did at Bimal's to check the clutch. Pull up the handbrake, shift to 3rd and let go of the clutch ... the engine's supposed to die without a shudder, the time period between letting go off the clutch and the engine dying determines the clutch's status. This was the guy's explanation but to be honest, I didn't really get it.

Anyway, now I'm still stuck with a 'whoosh-less' swift, could it be a problem with the Turbo? I've tried cleaning the Air Filter (or atleast thats what the guys at Green Cars said they'd done), changed fuel pumps but nah ... nothing's working. Am sure there's something wrong, it feels like it's suffocating for air or fuel ... reminds me of my friend's '03 Tata Indica Diesel with the AC on.

One more thing, any idea where I could oversee the Air Filter being cleaned, any recommended place on this side of the city (Koramangala, IndiraNagar). Somehow I still feel it's a dirty air filter (or maybe my mind's refusing to believe that it could be something more serious)

Edit: I just noticed that I've been billed for 20 W40 Engine Oil. I don't have my Manual to check for the recommended grades but is this ok?

@rufroc- Air filter should be replaced at 40k. Not cleaned! Did your service station do that? The filter costs only Rs200 odd, so its well worth it.
If your air filter is clogged, engine will be noisier than usual, sound strained, and rev rather poorly. Engine will "feel tight" like when it was being run in. smoke also increases, and yes, the "whoosh" goes away.

Check oil level to make sure its not overfilled.

I had a similar issue, that was fixed when the intercooler was cleaned. The turbo itself is not known to have problems. Have heard nothing about it on the forum or at the MASS. Also get the turbo plumbing checked to ensure that there are no leaks. I dont know how they would do that at mass without a boost pressure gauge, but they told me they checked it, and since my problem was solved, I did not pester them about it.

The clutch is a possibilty, but that would produce a drop in mileage, and a rev happy engine with disproportionately poor acceleration compared to the revs.
I have the same doubt as you-
How can we be sure if our clutch is in good condition?
The method you described as done by Bimal is what every garage does, but is it a reliable test?

EDIT- more than the temp range of the oil- its the Grade of the oil that is important. For the Swift D i think its supposed to be CF4 or higher. not sure though. Please verify with the manual.

@rufroc: why dont you take it to RNS Yeshwanthpur and have a chat with Sachin, air filter go ahead and replace, its not very costly part at the end of the day.

@rippergeo: It's a Greens Wind filter and that is why I suspect they didn't bother cleaning it :) (one service advisor even had the nerve to suggest that the problem is with my filter and I have to put the stock filter back). Read about checking the intercooler pipes, I hope I find a reliable place to get that done out here in Bangalore. Has to be one of these two things.

@Jaggu: Am going on a vacation but this is certainly one of the first things to do when I get back. I live on the other side of the city (K'mangala) but I don't mind driving all the way to RNS, since you recommend the place and contact. Am tired of explaining 'stuff' to people whom you expect to know 'stuff'. It doesn't inspire confidence when these service guys blabber on about something totally not related.

Goto any shop which does fitments and service of greens before you decide on anything else, including driving to RNS. if you have an after market part, its best to avoid dealer to solve any related issues.

Don't blame the poor turbo for getting the intercooler dirty. The real reason for the intercooler getting dirty is because of the stupid emissions law by which nothing can be directly vented out to atmosphere(yeah, yeah, I know - Love for your atmosphere and all that). Therefore, crankcase ventilation is routed through inlet, which then contaminates the intercooler with it's oil fumes. Add the soot from EGR being pumped back:Frustrati, and you have a nice mix.

So basically, no busted seal on turbo, or the car would exhibit other symptoms. How long would the car run with a busted turbo seal, anyway?

Opened up the plastic engine cover this morning looking for the line that ventilates the crankcase. Could not find it. Does the DDiS have such a system? Where is it? Can some one help?

I have no idea where you can find this in Swift DDiS. However, since we are getting too technical here, I thought it proper to start another thread on the topic. Let's discuss it there.

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/techni...es-engine.html

Ok replied in new thread as Sir Kuttapai on the horseeeee suggested :D

First let me clear the air, NO swift D doesn't have a scheduled service at 25k kms, service intervals are every 10k kms after 10k mark. So why did i get the job done.

1) I do oil change at 5k kms, since most of my driving is in peak city traffic. Stop and go's, long idle, short trips, you name it my car goes through it. So just to keep the engine a lil more happy i opt for 5k oil replacement. No i dont change filters while at this.

2) Last service somehow got into hurry bury at the last minute and didnt attend properly to rattles!

Since i moved to HSR thought of going back to RNS hosur rd branch, anyways these were small routine jobs. Fixed up an appointment last week, and opted for today. Middle of the week, vacation time = less rush at workshops.

Dropped in 10 minutes early and was welcomed by SA Shankar. Oops he is not fluent with English but we strike a chord with my broken Hindi ;) Initially had a tough time convincing about my unscheduled service. He was confused if i missed out on the 20k service, finally air cleared and instructed and reconfirmed on a doze of Mobil Delvac ie job 1.

Meanwhile bumped into my old friend Gururaj, the Service Manager and said hi to him also.

Job 2: Rattles!! And i meant business this time around, told him to keep the car as long as he wants BUT i want a rattle free car!! No i was not shouting still managed to get the point across and he promptly put a * against the rattle complain. I somehow knew he also meant business.

Job 3: 5 point check with emphasis on air filter clean up.

Repeated and reconfirmed and then i thought why not some interior 3M dressing and that was job 4.

Job 5: Brush touch up front bumper scars, oh yeah i got few of em added over last couple of crazy months.

Shankar promised delivery at 6 pm, called up at 4 pm to take a chance, and i can avoid peak traffic and he confirmed car is ready and can come anytime. Jumped into the rick and reached in 30 mts met Shankar and he guided me to the car where 3M guys were doing the finishing touches. Signed a GOOD JOB for them and they in return ensured my car was smudge free (First time!!) after service.

Gururaj also met me there and ensured everything was in order, i thanked him and had a friendly chat with him while Shankar was scanning the nooks and corners for dirt :P

Shankar explained that he has removed all door pads and stuffed em up as well as adjusted the doors. Said only the rear speaker tray he couldnt do much, i was lil confused since in my car somehow that plank is held well in place. He assured that he took rough road ride and double checked that all rattles were taken care. He even offered me a test, but somehow i was convinced by his confidence.

They didn't have any snowhite paint so he informed, scars will have to be attended at a later date, no problemo. Nazar nahi lagegaa!

Paid up and thanks to Maruti auto card i made a nice deal, more on this along with the bill details.

Took the car out and HALLELUIAH!!! my prayers have been heard and who said Swift cant be rattle free!!!

RNS HOSUR has done an EXCELLENT job, absolutely no rattle, even when jumping between broken lanes on Hosur road. Only thuds from the tire and then silence. I need to get used to this really out of place feeling, for a change Snowhite felt close to Rudra's Optra sans the plush ride. Had removed my HU control and hence i was obsessed at finding the rattles for the whole 6 kms drive to office.

Then figured out the rear parcel tray thingie that Shankar mentioned was my unattended/unfastened spare wheel which will do a THUD if i hit a bump violently, which i can live with.

Am a very happy customer, car is purring thanks to the dose of air cleaning for the air filter and the car is finally rattle free.

For the pessimist in me i want to check how long this lasts, i know that my car was ok till 15k kms, when a small squeak pushed me to report it and then slowly the rear doors made my days miserable, which reached pinnacle soon after 20k kms.

Yes will give a 9/10 for this one to RNS Hosur and my bill break up:
  1. Engine Oil Mobil Delvac 3 lit - 759.99
  2. 5 point service - 250
  3. Vehicle washing and cleaning - 225
  4. Consumable check / replacement - 61
  5. Upholstory cleaning - 800
  6. Total - Rs 2,356/-

So in short - Rs 1500 for service + 800 for Upholstery clean up. This should give people an idea of how expensive OR inexpensive a Diesel swift at 25,000 service is.

The Maruti Auto card- I had accumulated 1150 points or so from previous jobs, which was redeemed this time at a value of Rs 1150 :D

So my net pay out including cleaning = Rs 1206/-

Jaggu: 2.2L Safari bill is the same :P

I was dumbfounded when my friend was billed 5k or so (I did report here) for his DDiS. Suzuki makes dough with illiterate customers and we who knows abcd about cars get decent bill.

Jaggu, if you were on Hosur road, how come you didnt prefer Surakshaa over RNS? OR was it that you just wanted to continue with RNS?
