A few people have suggested the lower leg of the R looks a bit like an elephants trunk as does the lower leg of the capital E in Enfield.

I've read that Royal Enfield says this was not intentional but I wonder?

Could it be a subtle reminder that these motorcycles are made in India?

Yes, Indeed, that could be the case. In fact, A RE dealer told me that E(nfiel)(D) was made to look like curtains splitting so.
