re: Review: Honda Activa 125 (Pearl Amazing White). EDIT - Now sold

Took the scooter to the ASC today for finding out the issue of the speedometer fluctuation. Here's the video:

Started from home and rode to the ASC that was 18.6 kms. Of this 18.6 kms, it wasn't working but the last kilometer the needle was perfect like nothing happened. Just to be sure took the vehicle in and got a minor job card opened for the same.

The mechanic opened the rear wheel and the sensor. good according to him. Sensor, wiring and the connectors were all okay.

As the sensor cover that is damaged (see image), they didn't have stock of it.

Just for the information:

Sensor: ₹1,600
Instrument Console: ₹2,427

Rode the scooter for almost 56 kms after it came out from the ASC, no issues with the needle.

re: Review: Honda Activa 125 (Pearl Amazing White). EDIT - Now sold

Scooter being 2.1 years old now, there was a peculiar vibration/judder felt when accelerator input is given in situations like:
  1. Slowing down and RPM is near idle, accelerator input given the judder is felt;

  2. While moving out from standstill position be it single riding or double;

  3. Riding at constant speed and accelerator input is increased, the judder is felt for a second or so.

Got the clutch cleaned today. Was an half an hour job for the mechanic and boy what a difference in ride-ability. Smooth as New.

All parts were cleaned with petrol liberally and grease applied where required and refit. All parts are in good health including the drive belt.

Odometer currently is at 7,801 kms. The speedometer is working normally. No more issues for now, fingers crossed!

Here are two images with the bulb on the scooter. Been long since these were fit but realised I haven't uploaded any images of the same here on the thread:

Not required since the difference is low enough. If one upgrades to 60/55W then a relay would be needed. Not sure if such bulb wattage is available for HS1 type.

Odometer Update

Review: Honda Activa 125 (Pearl Amazing White). EDIT - Now sold-img_20180920_2121111280x720.jpg

With great difficulty reached this small milestone. Last time the scooter was ridden on 12.07.2018 (odometer was 7,800km) and then the scooter was started on 20.09.2018 (70 days it was parked idle ) and hit the 8,000 km milestone.

Don't know when next she'll be used.

Thanks for detailed review. I was looking one for my daughter and came across this. Nothing like to hear directly from an owner.

Quoting an older post of mine (5 months) where the clutch was opened and cleaned to address the judder issue but it resurfaced in 200 kms, so got it opened again and I could find the drive belt cracked at many places plus the weight rollers also worn out a bit (flat spots on the surface) so decided to replace them. Drive belt was ₹550 and the cost of weight rollers was + slide pieces ₹150.

After replacement, it was all good plus there was a marked difference in the way the scooter accelerated and even responded to fine inputs was great, 5 days passed by and the judder resurfaces again.

Took it to my FNG again and opened it for inspection and what could be the issue, found that the clutch shoe (lining on it) is brownish in colour which means the lining has absorbed grease/oil causing it to slip when speed is low (read where the bite is not at maximum). Bought the new clutch shoes (₹400) and refit the whole thing again after cleaning with petrol.

Updating here after 1100 kms of riding post clutch shoe replacement, all is fine and no judder is felt whatsoever.

Current Odometer: 9,122 kms.

Hello Anurag, I have been following your thread since you started it and use your tips and experience for maintaining my Activa 125 too. Thanks much for sharing your experience so someone new to scooters like me can read and learn.

My Activa 125 is a 2016 make which has run 14.5k as of today and it has been very good so far with respect to ride experience as I ride it often for ~50km/day.

Last week, the drive belt snapped while riding at 50kmph locking up the rear wheel completely. As I couldn't even push the scooter, found a mechanic nearby and with his help and couple others moved the scooter to his shop and opened it up. Found the drive belt snapped to pieces and stuck everywhere. The mechanic did a good job of disassembling the clutch, weight rollers, spring etc. cleaned and greased them up, replaced the belt and assembled them back. I did a test ride and all looked fine then.

But since then, I have been noticing is a very noticeable vibration/judder when
1) On throttle between 20-45kmph
2) Slowing down
3) On idle

Past 45kmph, it's smooth. The vibration especially the audible noise from the headlight cowl is so annoying. I checked with the same mechanic again and he said it's normal for Activas to have these vibrations/judder but I have not faced this with the same scooter before for 2 years.

As you appear to have faced a similar issue, would clutch shoes could be the issue here too? Or anything else you could think of because of the mechanic's disassembling and assembling the parts?

Thanks!

Thank you, sir, for the appreciation.

Please replace the weight rollers, slide pieces and clutch shoes.

Please do not apply lots of grease and see to it that the clutch shoe liners don't come in contact with any grease/oil.

Thank you! Will get it checked with a good FNG as nearby Honda service centers are bottom of the barrel type.

When it was opened and cleaned, did you manage to click any pictures of the internals like of the clutch shoes or the weight rollers? If yes, can you please post them?

Finally got around to take the scooter to a FNG. The mechanic within a very short ride identified it as issue with clutch weight rollers. He opened it up and showed that couple of them were damaged.

Unfortunately couldn’t get Honda original clutch roller set in nearby parts stores and as HSC is a bit of a trek, I settled to replace with what a store suggested. Make was of a company named VHPL (Vijaydeep Agencies) and the mechanic observed that these rollers were little bit less weight compared to Honda ones but we went ahead put them in and the ride is much better now. He though suggested to replace them whenever I take the scooter next to service with the HSC just to be safe.

Also changed the spark plug to a Bosch one from stock NGK as I couldn’t get NGK like the weight rollers. The mechanic also identified a small leak because of a bad head beading and suggested to replace the beading with the HSC.

Overall, the ride is back to normal now. Have to ride for few hundred more KM to see if the smoothness remains. I couldn’t take proper pictures of the process and parts but attaching few.

Thanks for your guidance and help!!
