Re: Which scooter to buy for short commutes?

I bought a Jupiter & a Wego - all in the span of a month!

Jupiter - for my dad to go around finishing chores.

Wego - for my wife and I to go around finishing chores.

Did not even bother to check others, why?

1. We had a Activa, and were bored of it!
2. External fuel filler - no more hassle of getting down and pulling your seat up every time you fuel.
3. Telescopic front suspension - much better ride quality. Gas filled rear mono-shocks.
4. 12" rims - much better handling than the 10" competitors.

If you think you wife too needs to use it, do have a look at the Wego. It is designed well with body weight well designed, does not feel as bulky as Jupiter and in essence - Wego is a Jupiter under the skin.

I bought the Wego from the initial batch when it was just launched in 2010. My wife uses it now for her office commute and it is still going strong. It never gave me any complaints. All the electricals are still stock. And that too without regular service. It's body balance technology actually works. When I take my wife as pillion on my Aprilia SR150 I have some difficulty in balancing. But not on the Wego. One of the few scooters which suits both the genders.

I second this suggestion about the Scooty Zest, specially if the women of the house are on the petite side.

My neighbour has one, and I borrow it once in a while to run errands in our colony. It's a very nimble and manoeuverable pocket dynamo due to the same 110 cc engine that it shares with the Wego/Jupiter, combined with its lesser weight.

Cheers,
Vikram

Re: Which scooter to buy for short commutes?

Making basic scooters is not a rocket science. Most of the scooters are competent and would serve the purpose, each with some strengths and weaknesses. What you should look for is, what would be the clinching point for you.

Most of all, having seen scooter owners of various brands in my friend circle, I have not heard anyone say they are dissatisfied with their scooters. They are utilitarian machines and most of them serve the purpose well.

If I were in your position, clinching point for me would be a scooter able to fit full face helmet. Yamaha Ray ZR and TVS Zest, I believe have the largest under seat storage and that could help you decide.

Re: Which scooter to buy for short commutes?

Go for Activa/Any Honda scooter :
1. If your travel route consists of smooth roads.
2. If resale value is of importance to you.

I've always found Activa/Any Honda scooter, plagued with starting trouble and mediocre brakes. Add to it not so sophisticated front suspension of the 110 cc scooters.
I would recommend Activa only to those who travels mostly on well paved roads, and don't have a heavy usage. Activa ages well, any FNG can repair it, has a nice resale, and has the smoothest engine in its class.

On the other hand most well balanced scooter is Jupiter. It is a relatively niggle free scooter with a better riding comfort compared to its class. It only looses out to Activa in engine smoothness.

If you want fun to ride scooter, Access 125 is the one to go.

If you want a hassle free experience, only go for the scooter you see on the road. Less selling scooters are a strict no no.

Re: Which scooter to buy for short commutes?

I have a Wego since last 5 years and has clocked around 10k kms.
It was unused for 2 years when I was abroad, else it has had decent run in 5 years.

The distinctive features for buying a wego in 2012 were :

1) 12 inch wheels
2) Telescopic suspension
3) Less width so very nimble in traffic
4) Body Balance - this really works, Jupiter does not have this.
5) External fuel filler - i love this
6) Easy stand, you can put this scooter on stand with one hand with right technique.

TVS Zest is another good option if ride height is an issue.

Re: Which scooter to buy for short commutes?

Mod note: Post edited punctuation and spacing, helps with readability. Thanks.

Having worked in the assembly department of Honda motorcycles and scooters India I can vouch for the fact that Honda scooters (either the Activa 4G or the 125) have great build and parts quality. It will serve you and your family well for long as your second no frills scooter.

Not endorsing the company but endorsing the quality with which the parts and the final products are manufactured. Having visited scooter facilities of other plants as well, I can say Jupiter and Fascino are safe bets as well.

As far as the quality and attitude of the dealers is concerned, I urge people to forward their complaints to HMSI, even the most trivial ones. They will be looked into. The problem is people do not complain, they move on to the next showroom or the next company.

Do not miss out on a great product because of mediocre customer service or do not buy a mediocre vehicle because of great customer service..The vehicle will stay longer than the anger.

Re: Which scooter to buy for short commutes?

If budget isnt an issue, why dont you consider the Aprilia SR150?

If you are looking at the Activas, then the Jupiter is a better buy.

I agree with the above absolutely! 10 kg lesser than the other twins (Wego, Jupiter) , but having the same engine, this is a pocket rocket at signals to vroom away! Minor irritant is not having external fuel filling like Wego or Jupiter, but still a capable vehicle. No complaints over 21 month ownership. Only this did not set the charts on fire like Wego / Jupiter

As for Access, well it packs a lot of grunt down low, which is good if you're heavy and your pillion is as well and if you both enjoy climbing inclines all day long or drag racing from light to light. But unless you intend to haul some serious weight, investing in a 125cc scooter doesn’t make much sense considering the FE, as the higher displacement only favours FE on long hauls.

When you come to think of it the Access is an Activa made by Suzuki with marginally better after sales support, which again is subjective to location.

Happy Riding!
I too have the same opinion about Activa, too common! Cliq is a worthwhile scooter but somehow the looks aren't upto my taste.

Thanks for the TVS service centre heads up, I think it will be better where I live.

And the scooter will mostly be ridden solo, and even if not, it will just be used within the city for short hauls, so I think 125CC does not make sense.

The difference in price between Activa and Jupiter is not much, would you still suggest the TVS twins?

Even though I'm inclined towards Jupiter, I did visit the Honda dealer. I'm not new to complaints about their attitude, but somehow I didn't experience any of that. My experience was pretty normal. Maybe it was an exception. :P

Haha, I'm not married yet. However, my mom/sister may use the scooter occasionally so the advice is helpful nonetheless.

Glad to know you had such a happy experience!

I think this is what makes is so popular, and kind of perfect for me needs. Thanks!

I wasn't aware it has the same engine, will definitely give it a ride, thanks!

Budget is not an issue per se, but this will be a secondary vehicle, which will only be used for short hauls. I don't think it makes sense to spend extra on something which does not provide any substantial benefit.

Wego/jupiter is any day better than Activa. We have both - wego and activa 4g. And I always reach out to wego keys when both are available. The handling, braking and ride are much better than activa. Activa is just a over hyped piece of machine.

Between a wego and a jupiter what would you guys suggest? I am single, will only do short commutes in the city. I believe even the jupiter has the combi brake system now.

Jupiter has nitrox air rear damper (shock absorber) providing optimal stability and comfort compared to competition. 12 inch wheels add further ease to drive in Indian road conditions.

Re: Which scooter to buy for short commutes?

I had done research on scooters some time ago when I was contemplating buying one. Wanted the Japanese reliability (Suzuki Access) AND the bells and whistles (external fuel filling, LED lights, etc.) Had considered Hero Maestro Edge after lot of deliberation.

Finally dropped the idea since there wasn't a single scooter which met all my requirements (the 150cc ones command a premium and have nothing to offer besides the engine).
Settled for a 2017 Duke 390 ( )
