Hello HTC,

Thank you for your warm message. I am sorry I couldn't reply on time as I was away for a while. The rear ladder on the Jimny serves a functional purpose to access the roof or roof-installed carrier. Yes, some get it installed near the hinges, and some (including me) get it installed on the left (far edge) where the door handle is. But installing it on either side does not make any difference, but I may stand corrected.

Re: Maruti Jimny Review

@maverick5490 - nice little drive review.

Agree fully with whatever you have mentioned on the capabilities of this small Jimny. I recently did a Chennai-Guruvayoor (650kms one way) with my wife in my Jimny and it was awesome. We did go straight to the destination with short little usual breaks. There was no tiredness or anything like that. It was very comfortable for two people, at the same time I would not say the same thing if i had couple of people in the rear, that would be uncomfortable for any rear passengers. It does a decent job in overtaking as well, if you plan it nicely. Overall a great car with a good ride.

Do not carry out wheel alignment at dealerships. Used a recommended specialist shop for that.

What is the need of resetting the steering angle sensor? Haven't heard to this before.

I agree, specially for Jimny. Had a harrowing experience with NEXA Pasco. More details here: Link (Maruti Jimny Review).

It is needed, specially all new Marutis with ESP. Steering angle sensor needs to be reset after any alignment/steering related job. The service manual too says so.

Unfortunately most Maruti dealerships are unaware of this. I got this done outside. More details: LInk (Tyre Shop - Haryana Wheels (Faridabad))

This was surprising, especially since he claimed to have 14 years of experience with Maruti service centers.
That is really concerning that Maruti Service Centre would hire such inept mechanics. I had hoped that being the No. 1 market leader, they'd have excellent service centres with knowledgeable mechanics but my experience servicing my Maruti Fronx Hatchback has also been sub-par.

Going a bit off topic here, but relevant to the topic of Maruti Service Centres, when I went for first service of my new Fronx, the mechanic was about to fill distilled water to dilute the coolant. I immediately rushed over and told him to not dilute the coolant as it was already premixed. According to Maruti's own manual, the Turbo engine uses pre-mix coolant unlike the regular 1.2L engine which used coolant that needs to be diluted.

The mechanic looked at me with an irritated look and told me how he had been working on Maruti Cars for 12 years and that this is how all coolants work and that there is no such thing as pre-mixed coolant. I stood my ground and told him again to not dilute the premixed coolant in my Fronx. Later on, I found out that they don't even stock the premix coolant and that they use the normal yellow coolant which needs to be diluted in each and every Maruti. Thankfully, I have the bad habit of checking the car personally as it's being serviced, which irritates the knowledgeable mechanics but gives me peace of mind

Is this something that can be done DIY or do you need the scanning tool for this?

Not surprised at all. A technician is only as good as his training, and most service centres rarely teach technicians to look up the relevant model's workshop and/or parts manual instead of just assuming things while working on cars.

I not only stay with the car, but also make clear notes on the job card about the spec of items/fluids likely to be involved in the service.

First thing first, I am bowled over by the suspension, I have been driving SUV's and lots of them, across all price range, but the way it takes bad roads has to be experienced. Very mature, very compliant, ride is absorbing and handling for a SUV is good. This Jimny was shod with 215's Cross Contact AT's so my experience was with it.

If and when I change my second car or add a third one, this should be it.
I got one (Alpha AT in white for 14L OTR) in mid January and have put some 2,000 odd kilometers on it.

Post delivery got the tires changed to Geolandar AT (LT ones on purpose). Next day, got the footsteps / rocksliders from Bimbra as parents may need to hop on the SUV.

I don't usually take it to highways, it's mostly for commuting and going to work.

Few observations -

- AC is a chiller

- OE music system is average

- Turning radius is huge (I have a 4X4 Scorpio so in comparison to that)

- Rear camera should have been better (my erstwhile Swift ZXi+ had better)

- LED headlamps are average (the Swift Zxi+ had better)

- Have sat at the rear once (for ~10 kms) and it's not for full grown adults (I am 5'9 at 77 kgs)

- A parcel tray should have been provided

- The front power windows are not easily accessible, you need to be sure of the button you are pressing, especially, the co-driver window

- There is no storage space to speak of, I had to add them aftermarket

- The rear seat belt chime is irritating. I have clipped on the belt and left it as it is. Rear occupancy in my use case is rare & only for very short commutes (~ 5 kms round trip types)

- Jimny is built well. I go to rural areas with very patchy / no-roads condition & I don't usually slow down, no rattles / squeaks (surprisingly it was absent on my Swift ZXi+ too, but I drove it carefully over its 35,xxx kms it was with me)

- It does turn heads wherever it goes

- I prefer to take my other SUV if it involves fast highway driving over better roads.

- Jimny does grow on you

- My infotainment shows just over 9 KMPL (for those interested)

- The UV cut glass is a boon in maintaining temperature as well as some privacy. Parked under hot sun, it does not get as hot as other vehicles.

That's it for now. Will add some pictures later, especially after getting a new grill. Current one does not look very good IMO.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks Kat!

I paid somewhere between 8.5 - 9K per tire. Unfortunately don't recall the exact amount, but it was between this figure.

I paid 6k/tyre for 235/75/15 geolandar AT/LT.
Stock tyres went for 3k/tyre.
No scuffing or rubbing.
Covered 13k kms.

Re: Maruti Jimny Review

Sunday activity : Spent the late morning and afternoon elbow-greasing the Jimny. The so called small car is a 'big' task to wash and polish at home.

Future BHPian in the making my 6 year old kiddo did his best to bring back the show-room like shine.

I sprayed water for the first time on the engine bay. I was pretty skeptical but the Jimny is supposed to handle mud and slush. A bucket of tap water shouldn't be a concern.

The GFX plastic mats proved to be a nice value addition to the car. They are really simple to clean and maintain. Just wiping off with a damp cloth does the job.

The finale was through a back-breaking session of spray ceramic wax application. The Turtle Wax actually works. The deep gloss and formation of an instant hydrophobic layer is noticeable. The hardest part was to do the roof. The after-market side steps really helped there.

I had just finished driving a Fronx turbo and I was uncomfortable driving the Jimny post that. I'll pen down my points.
  1. The car is really cute and small. The rear seat was able to accommodate myself, my wife and my son.
  2. The front seats are ok, not as comfortable as Brezza or Fronx.
  3. The drive starts without any drama.
  4. The engine note is nice to hear.
  5. The car did build up speed till 60kmph but then I had a heart in mouth moment with the brakes. They were spongy! I pressed it and the car didn't respond the way the Fronx had responded.
  6. The rumble strips didn't unsettle the car.
  7. The steering felt like Jeeps of yesteryear's shown in movies wherein you have to keep it moving to maintain a straight line. This could be a one off issue with the test car.
  8. I was able to do a U turn without much issue.

After the test drive, all I need to say is that it's a great car but it is not for me, atleast for my current requirements.
Quoting my full post as the current one will be on similar lines.

My daily driver is a Fronx Delta Plus (O) AGS now. I had gone to collect the RC of it to Nexa. I decided to take a longish test drive of Jimmy again. It was a 49K kms run Zeta AT.
  1. The car was thoroughly abused one, apparently was involved in an accident with bent chassis. It was repaired but somehow not that great.
  2. The steering was wobbly. It was shaking like anything after 60kmph. Not at all trustworthy.
  3. The brakes were pretty good, no spongy feeling unlike my last test drive.
  4. Fronx (6 airbag variants) has the best front seats I've ever sat in. It's just wonderful for my built.
  5. There is a constant whine from the transmission.

I was considering the Jimny for my daily use but now, I have decided it is not for me even with the current use case scenario.

Re: Maruti Jimny Review

There's not much to update, except that my Jimny has now crossed 12,000 kilometers. My wife has gained confidence in doing intercity drives without me needing to navigate. Mission Jimny accomplished, as this was one of the main reasons I upgraded from the Zeta MT to the Alpha AT . On the return trip from Mysore to Bengaluru, I set the cruise control to 85 km/h and achieved a fuel efficiency of over 17 km/l. This is quite decent considering the car was loaded with two adults, two kids, luggage, a 50kg rice bag, and a top box filled with various items.

I started feeling sleepy on the expressway, so I pulled over and handed the driving responsibilities to my wife. It was great to catch up on 15 minutes of sleep, and once we entered the city limits, I took over the steering again. I felt refreshed and was able to reach home without any issues. The sleepiness was due to an early morning run after a long break, which resulted in body aches and tiredness. Nothing else.

cheers,
HTC

Re: Maruti Jimny Review

Hi

Wanted to check if anybody else also faces the following rattles around the 2k RPM. Posting a video I found on Facebook of the AT. However, I get something similar in my MT. It's slightly less than what is audible in this video. The rattle is more pronounced in the 4th gear and is observed when accelerating. Its there in 5th also but much more muted. Also, it's probably not there if there is no load on the engine, like going downhill.

https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1UN5GNj2MY/

I have also observed another sound while taking off in first gear on a steep incline. This comes a second or two after releasing the clutch fully. This sound also seems to be widely reported. Posting a link of this sound also. Would like to hear if others face these sounds as well.
