Re: Our Lost & Found Classic - 1954 Dodge Convertible

Hello KPS sir,

Just read the entire thread. Beautiful restoration. I'm not sure if I missed the picture, but if at all you do have a picture of the car along with everybody involved in the beautiful restoration, I request you to please share it.

Thanks and congrats.

Re: Our Lost & Found Classic - 1954 Dodge Convertible

What a beautiful story, so well told and illustrated. Congratulations to you KPS and all those skilled technicians involved. The BBC video turing up was truly amazing and heart warming-clearly demonstrating the power of the internet. To paraphrase Paul Coelho "when you want something with all your heart, the entire universe conspires to make it happen". Well done and great going.

Happy Motoring,
I had dropped a thank you mail to Mr. Simon Stokes and he as replied as below

Quote:
Dear Subbaiah,

Thank you for your email. I am so pleased it was interesting for you and your parents.

I wont bore you too much but essentially I am interested in tea planters and particularly British ‘stay behind planters’ who remained in India after 1947. I had been aware there was a BBC film made about Ooty in 1973 for some years. I’d even contacted the BBC asking for a copy but without success. Then a few weeks ago I discovered that someone had recently uploaded it to you tube. Having watched the programme I was interested to try and find out more about the some of the people, including Jack Lawrence. When I googled his name along with various tags such as Ooty, India, tea etc, the BHP site came up and I made the link with the car I had just seen Jack driving. Clearly the restored car looks incredible and there appeared to be some affection for Jack Lawrence, so thought worth checking just in case you had not seen the film. As I say I am very pleased indeed you enjoyed it. I was sorry however to learn that he did not survive for many more years after the film was made.

I have travelled to India numerous times over the years but always for work and regretfully I have not yet been to Bangalore. If I ever do it would be a pleasure to meet you.

In the meantime enjoy your wonderful car!

Best wishes

Simon Stokes
The thoughtfulness of Mr. Simon Stokes made this happen. I am glad that he was able to link the video to Team-BHP and the rest is all recorded here.

We are ever grateful Mr. Simon Stokes, Bless You

Many cheers

KPS

Re: Our Lost & Found Classic - 1954 Dodge Convertible

My steering wheel was a sore point for me. Finding a good replacement at an acceptable price, was always a challenge.

Being persistent always helps and I was able to locate one, which my dear friend was able to bring in for me.

The original steer wheel in car had been ravaged by the Weather Gods

We restored the same locally, till we could find a original one

The new steering wheel looks good.

Though used, it was in very good condition and has changed the look and feel of the car

Re: Our Lost & Found Classic - 1954 Dodge Convertible

At home, we have parking space for two vintage cars only. For the last 25 years, we have consistently followed a policy of upgrading our cars. So, when we find a better car (Marque, Body Style, Production Numbers, history, closeness to originality, etc) one of the existing cars have to go.

Well, it was the Dodge's turn this time. I am happy that the car will remain in Bangalore, with a KVCCC Member, who is very closely associated with the Nilgiris and last but not the least, knew Jack Lawrence.

The parking is taken. More on the other car later

The engine is in great condition. This morning we fired her up, and the water from the exhaust indicates good compression

The Plymouth is unwilling to give up her parking

We say bye to her.

We enjoyed the ownership. Finding the car, after a hunt over many years and restoring was a wonderful experience. My parents relived some of the the old moments associated with the car and we were happy to able to share these nostalgic moments. This special car and Jack Lawrence will live on in our memories.

Cheers

Yes, Ram will hope to do justice to the car and its previous owners. There is a lot history and nostalgia to capture and pen.

The new car had to be a worthy replacement for the Dodge. As you did correctly guess from the customized car cover, it is a Daimler. 1947 Daimler DB18, Ex-Mysore to be precise. Was with one family for 59 years and I have been fortunate to get this car.

Yes KPS I am sure you will.

You know I was a bit sorry to learn that the "Blue Beauty" was going away. I was always feeling proud of the small small contribution/suggestion I could make (and which you and your dad were gracious enough to accept) for her restoration

Best Regards & Drive Safe
