The top of my rear wheels were leaning into the wheelwell, correct? And that is negative camber?

Ideally for Heralds I believe the top of the wheels should be leaning out of the wheelwell - i.e. positive camber?
Karl,

Excatly - it should be a Positive Camber - as shown in the diagram you had posted.

In the one below its a Negative camber but the plumb line shown there will clarify what will be positive (top end coming/centered to the left of the plumb line)

Next visit to Mumbai, need to sit with you and look at the photos of SRT

Bulldogji is right (no surprises there). The top leaning towards the car is negative camber and apparently Heralds are supposed to be set up this way (info from the net)

A slight negative camber, as the illustration shows keeps the centre of gravity lower.

With positive camber (top pointing outwards) the wheels buckle under cornering forces.

The illustrations are specific to Triumph Heralds.

Plenty to ponder about, eh Karl?

Dear Karl - Top inside = negative camber. Top outside = positive camber. For Herald in unladen condition, camber is positive. The exact values are given in the workshop manual. Please PM me the rear shock absorber part number from the catalogue, I have asked for the drawing to find out the full jounce and rebound dimensions, let's see if I get something, although chances are less.

Best regards,

Behram Dhabhar

Dr. Behram would have already seen it, but a closer examination of the broken surface can reveal the type of fracture and can lead to some conclusion and then possible solutions.

This is what I remember. Every Herald I ever saw had positive camber unless it was fully loaded, in which case camber was near neutral (still very slightly positive).

Had shot this video many Sundays back, just as a quick test. Ended up stringing it together in laid-back video with the lovely little Herald cruising down Bombay streets...

Awesome video! And song too!

Everything about this video is, in fact! Even the roads! Man, you guys sure are lucky! How I wish I had roads like that to drive my Herald on!

Re: 1966 Standard Herald Mark II - Restoration

Tips to reduce axle breakage in Herald:

1. Fix an additional bearing near the wheel side - this was the remedy used by many and found very effective.

2. Drive slowly into potholes and on speedbreakers even if you have an excellent suspension and even after fixing the abovementioned second bearing.

3. The Herald has a positive camber at the rear which changes according to the wear in the leaf spring / shock absorber. This positive camber and changes according to wear DO NOT contribute to axle breakage.

This one is just plain EPIC!

Just look at the beautiful surroundings of South Bombay! And the manner in which the Herald is bouncing over the roads- Ah! Just EPIC!

Now- I'd better get 5775 up and running, and fetch her to my Bombay residence, and quick. She is in hibernation as we speak.

Shame, no?

South Bombay can be rather sleepy on a Sunday afternoon! This was right after one of the rather regular vintage car meets that take place outside Starbucks at Horniman Circle on Sundays.

Re: 1966 Standard Herald Mark II - Restoration

some one was asking me once if there are samples of lights of Herald.
Attached are some of the old stock of lights of our herald lying safe from decades.
There might be clutch plate pressure plate and fly wheel some where.

Nice stash! Only the orange ones seem to be of the Herald (mk2 only) though- the larger conical white one seems of Standard Pennant/10 while the flatter one seems to be for the Gazel.

I live in Bangalore for more than a decade but the stuff which I posted before in the forum is in Gujarat.
I also have another thread where I restored our Maruti 800 (SB 308) in Gujarat
