INDIA'S NATIONAL CAR
I quote from the Autocar Sept '07 anniversary issue (60 years of Cars in India) Chapter 4, page 14,entitled "India's National Car"
" The tiger is the national animal of India. The national bird - peacock. And lotus, the national flower. But what is the national car of India? Most people would name the Ambassador."
" The unofficial national car of India is more than just a motoring icon. it is the car that has defined and dominated the indian landscape for the past 50 years. This all-purpose car has played many roles- from a taxi to a family car, from a VIP car to the Prime Minister's vehicle."
"In 1948, the company decided to transfer production to Uttarpara in West Bengal. this was the birthplace of the car that would become a cultural icon of its age."

Spotted this nice MK1 a few days back. The car is still in daily use! But thealloys look out of place though!

Nice image JayD but the alloys are not cool with the classic lines. Here's one that I sighted in Hyderabad near the Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences. Its an old Mark II.

Yup, the mk1 sure could be easily brought back to concours with the pig-ugly alloys replaced with the original rims- wonder why those were fitted in the first place! The old rims surely dont bend inwards on bumps, unlike those on M800s, Indicas!

Nice to see the hyderabadi mk2! Incidentally, I just remembered- I see a rather tired looking mk1 in a dirty white colour on the same road, just a little ahead of NIMS. It has one rear tail-light lens missing. 'never got to stop and take it's pics. even though I've passed by there often! stupid:

'will do so sometime.

This Ambassador belongs to my friend who lives in Surrey, UK.He is Spares Secretary of the Morris Cowley, Oxford and Issis Owners Club, Oxford , UK. I have just received his email with these two pictures of his just restored Ambassador, which he and his wife have named as Sachin after Sachin Tendulkar.Incidentally the couple is an avid cricket fan and were too impressed by Sachin's batting in the last India-England matches.
Note the Morris logos on the bonnet and on the hubcaps too. Also note the original taillights and the plasticky dashboard of the Ambassador. They had been restoring this car since the past few months and had recently got some taxi pictures from India mailed by me, to adapt a colour scheme. My friend has himself restored the car and was lately talking about the winter chill and how they had used the heater to warm up their workshop and spray paint the car.The car is ready for their annual Ministry of Transport (MOT) test that every five year plus old in the U.K. has to take every year.

Some pics of an Ambassador. I am not too sure which model it was. Had to take a snap eventhough I was driving fro I liked the side trims which were immaculate to say the least and I liked the rear Bumper guards too.

Suren this appears to be the same car that made an appearance at your recent Hyderabad rally, am I right?
