i went to a store near by and they didnt have my size for KYT TT or the NFR . Ended up buying MT Thunder 4 . a proper snug fit for now. I cant say much about the windnoise coz i have ridden by bike in city conditions where i havent been able to go beyond 50kmph. |
Hey, how is the wind noise if you might have tested it by now?
I replaced my AGV K3 SV helmet recently as it was more than 7 year old and recommended life span of the helmet is 5 year. I couldn't find any AGV, HJC or SHOEI helmets in the market so had to settle down with MT Revenge 2 helmet. The wind noise hit me hard and I started using the 3M ear plugs. Things were going good, then one good day I bought Cardo Spirit HD thinking I can listen to music on the long rides. But I was wrong, even at the full volume music was getting suppressed by the wind noise at 3 digit speed (with or without earplug). As I was out of option, I decided to make my helmet quiet.
1st step was to find the culprit. Though every single extruded part on the Helmet was contributing to the noise, the biggest culprit were the 2 air intake vents on the top of the helmet. Air intakes are designed like RAM air intake to increase the power of the engine instead of cooling my head.
2nd step was to find a suitable solution. I searched online and found that for cooling, NACA duct can do the job without creating much drag(noise).
3rd step was implementing the proposed change. I removed the RAM like vent from the helmet, took measurements and designed a matching NACA duct using FreeCad. Took just 2 iterations and I 3D printed it using the TPU filament (Rubber type material).
Did it made the Helmet quiet? Not completely, but wind noise decreased a lot and now I am able to hear the song at my cruising speed
Couple of pictures, when hack was in progress:
Front View: Left one is the RAM type inlet that comes with the helmet. Right one is the NACA duct inlet.
Side View: Showing NACA duct in detail.
[P.S. The balloon pump visible in the second picture eliminated the need of a wind tunnel for my R&D rl:]

Couldn't you simply close the vents? Or do you mean its loud even when the vents are closed. Are AGVs quieter than MTs?

There is a design flaw in the MT Revenge 2 Helmets. If you see the first photo I shared earlier, valve to close to vent is midway in the intake duct(and not at the start of the vent as in AGV). Due to this even when the valve is closed, wind still is directed towards the closed valve, causing turbulence and noise.
I don't think I can say AGVs are quieter than MTs as it all depends on the design of the Helmet .But based on my first hand experience I confirm that AGV K3 SV is far quieter than MT Revenge 2,
Bought MT Hummer yesterday, gloss black colour, was not getting black anywhere , finally found one ,medium size at power sports Kalyan Nagar. Called and asked them to hold it for me. Costed 4900. I tried multiple brands but not comfortable with the weight and balance . Both Blade 2 and Hummer were fitting me well. Went for Hummer due to colour choice and budget .
My HD X440 finally arrived last week after waiting for 7 months (yeh!!) and now it is time for helmet shopping. I am currently using RE half helmet for city duties but need a proper full face helmet for highway rides.
Which store in Bangalore has all good brand under one roof, like MT,LS2 etc so that i can compare all? Also, does it make sense to go for Carbon fiber one now or something Ls2 storm or MT Thunder 4 would suffice? Of course, will try both at the store, but other than light weight, what other advantage does a carbon fiber lid offer vs its non-carbon fiber counterparts? The cost is nearly 3x, so want to know.
Also, i would be visiting Singapore sometime in march or april. Would it make sense to pick up an Arai, Shoei,HJC or AGV there or LS2 would be good enough? What will be the ISI requirement if i do pick up one from Singapore? Also, any good place to visit in Singapore to get a good deal on helmets?

I had the scorpio exo 490 before this and surprisingly lesser wind noise. if you keep the visor open there is an irritating whistling noise which the scorpion didnt have.
I am still breaking in the helmet. There are times when the helmet slides down the cheeks a little bit and my head comes in contact with the padding creating a pressure point.
I got myself a HJC RPHA 11 Carbon. The Gray and Red color scheme looks great and it matches my motorcycle! Since sizing was not an issue as I had a RPHA 70 ST previously, I could buy this online from Europe and got it shipped at a great price (~ INR 27500 / ~USD$330 landed). Since I also got a dual pack Sena 50S, shipping was free. ("free" shipping always makes us happy!)
I haven't bothered weighing it, but the sticker on the helmet (size Large) claims it to be 1250gm, and it does feel pretty light. I am yet to ride in hot weather or at very high speeds to comment on its behavior. In the few 100 miles I have ridden with it, it seems to do a great job. It came with 2 visors and I have the smoked visor on permanently as I rarely ride the dark.
My wife got a HJC RPHA 11 Pro Miles Morales locally, which was almost 2x the $$ I paid for mine, but it look so fabulous I am very tempted to get one for myself!
Guys, need advice. I haven't been on this thread since a long time. I am looking to buy a full faced ISI marked helmet (Got to follow Govt regulations) that goes well with my new Silver Yamaha Aerox ( Yet to take delivery). Previously I have owned an AGV, HJC CL-17, Steelbird Air & a few more.
My requirements are as follows.
1. Small size as my head is a bit small & oval relative to standard size.
2. Wind buffeting. I need a helmet that does shut down the wind noise pretty well. This is important to me.
3. A wider windshield, max height and width. I got the Steelbird Air for that very reason and for local commutes only. But wind noise is unbearable).
4. Pinlock ready visor
5. D Ring strap
6. Light weight
I am not choosy about the colour & graphics. I haven't yet zeroed in on any brand / model. Budget is mid range
Please advise. Thanks
I've been looking to my tailor my small size LS2 Thunder Carbon to be a little smaller. Shops tell me that despite the XS and S sizes sharing the same shell, the XS padding won't fit in a S lid, because the buckles will be slightly off. At the very least I want some tighter cheeks to fix slapping on highways. However, I can't find any official cheek fillers in India but a shop suggested I get some custom tailored cheek filling done at some other local shop. Anyone have any experiences with this?

That's a beautiful helmet.
If you don't mind can you please tell me which website did you buy it from?
And assuming you got it delivered at Mumbai, how much customs duty and taxes did you have to pay in addition to the purchase price?

Hi Pratik I got it shipped to Boston. If you calculate and consider the import duty, it may still end up being a good price if you happen to get a discounted price online.
I bought mine from
https://www.motostorm.it/en/ and I also bought another helmet just yesterday from
https://www.championhelmets.com/
If you know your size, you could keep an eye on the above websites and a few others like
https://www.fc-moto.de/ and
https://www.motocard.com/, although I have not personally used these two websites
I recently ordered parts for my motorcycle from
https://www.tradeinn.com/en for a decent price and prompt delivery.
Recently I purchased a SMK Typhoon Helmet.

Costed around 5K.
It looked good at the time of buy and felt VFM at the time. But after wearing it for about a month now, i am not feeling so comfortable in it.
Following are my pain points:
1. There is a certain amount of ear pain after using it for more than 45 minutes of ride, the weight (it says 1600 gms +/- 50gms) feels heavy after wearing it even on office commutes of around 20 mins.
2. Another issue i face is the fit after wearing spectacles. First of all, it is a struggle to get those in, above the ears, then adjust the helmet to feel that they are sitting comfortably.
3. Wind noise at speeds greater than 80 Kmph. Its just bad. the noise comes from both sides, above the ear zone and get noisier as the speed increases.
I do wear a head cap which covers my ears before donning the helmet, that helps in preventing the top of the ears from folding.
From the forum i do understand that noise is something you cannot do with at high speeds and the only solution is ear plugs. but a less noisier helmet would help.
Any suggestions on helmets which are lighter, weight distribution is better and have less noise at higher speeds?
I am willing to extend the budget to around 15K if that helps.

Guys, my Singapore trip is almost finalised for first week of April. Have short listed few shops to try and hopefully buy a good helmet (Arai, Shoei or HJC). What is the deal with ISI mark/sticker? Can i add it after getting it here? Will there be any issues with customs?
Please help me with this.
