re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Reminds me of an old malayalam movie where this actor becomes a home minister for the state the first time he contests...he issues an order that ministers need not have cops for escorts/pilots.

Nice movie that. Wishful thinking i know

Sorry for the on topic but off topic comment

We also should remember Prado led convoys never oversped or drove like maniacs. There was an inherent fear around Her, no matter her subordinates or government officials or anyone else. She was a strong leader.

Doesn't seem so. I think the bus driver would have missed the turn for the hotel and may have made it in the last moment at a high speed, causing the accident.

It also looks like it was raining, which might've compounded the result. High time ESP becomes mandatory, at least for heavy vehicles.

Caught an accident 2 weeks ago, the same day of the crates video I posted earlier. It looks like the Maroon Alto on the left lane tried to move to the right because the white WagonR in front of it was slowing down and moving to the left. The bike tried to overtake the Alto and got hit. He was lucky that the auto swerved in time.

The only good thing in this video, both were wearing helmets. When you drive/ride, anticipation is always the key, should be on top of things and calculate all possible failure modes. The biker was trying to move from the extreme left to right-most lane without proper precaution like there is no tomorrow ; car driver forgot that there is something called OVRM. That Biker should be thankful that things weren't serious.

Ah the swerve immediately type of people (they be increasing in number with each passing day)

Whatever happened to slow down, stop, put indicator, look for safe gap and then go?

When did our first instinct become "twist the steering wheel" instead of "brakes!"

Thank god nothing serious happened.

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

I had a scary experience today in a town in Gujarat. The traffic light turned red and I stopped just a bit ahead of the white line before the Zebra. I was reversing when I saw a bike coming at a good speed behind me. The guy got down after coming to a screeching halt and gave me some abusive words. I was perplexed because I stopped at a signal, and there were so many cameras on the signal pole.

Apparently he was angry because I stopped. He said that people don't stop at the signal and there was another guy on a bike beside him who concurred.

Many cities in Gujarat have this popular and weird driving habit. No one stops at the signal. If you follow the law you will get abuses and possibly be rear ended. On the other hand the traffic police issue chalaans freely and these are quite expensive.

I will continue to stop at signals at off peak hours, but otherwise I will move with the flow from now on. The government here is setting up a road safety center costing crores while the people are reluctant to follow the basic rules like wearing helmets and stopping at a red light. Strange times.

At risk of going off topic, the above statement is not a good reason to break the rules! If you are not at fault, you are not!

I have had to hear to a lot of such abuses and on a couple of instances it even turned to almost a violent from the other party. Luckily on both those instances there was traffic police who jumped out of nowhere and saved the day.

Here's what I usually do, if I see that I won't be able to make it through the signal on time, I start slowing down and gradually come to a halt. This way, the people behind me know that I am going to stop and they find thier way around me.

re: Accidents in India | Pics & Videos

Accident caused by careless parking of Autorickshaw.
Although it looks nasty, due to quick thinking and act from the lorry driver, there are no major harm done. The lady rider is safe.

Details (And better video - Starting 0:35 sec) can be seen here

This is not just in Gujarat. I've had expletives shouted at me from numerous people for stopping at signals that appear free. I however take my own sweet time, and 90% of the time do not budge until it's green. Only times I do skip are in the early mornings, when the road is empty.

Indian drivers have this perception that they should waste as little time driving as possible. The amount of haste they exhibit can put seasoned emergency services drivers to shame.

Good braking by the truck driver! But how did the auto go forward again?

Thanks for sharing it. That lorry driver has exceptional reflexes . Even if he saw the auto rolling back onto the road that was still amazing.

I guess the inclination of the road made it go forward again. Not able to make it out for sure even at 720p.
