In a tragic accident, 17 construction workers, including nine women, were killed, and five others seriously injured, when a speeding private bus collided with a mini-goods vehicle on the Madurai-Tirumangalam ring road near here on Friday.
The police said that the mofussil bus was bound for Kovilpatti from Madurai. The workers, all belonging to a hamlet near Palavanatham in neighbouring Virudhunagar district, were travelling in the goods vehicle to their work spot.
Though eyewitness accounts blamed the accident on the bus driver’s “rash and negligent driving,” preliminary enquiries suggested that a tyre burst might have been the cause, the police said.
Superintendent of Police (Madurai district) V.Balakrishnan said that the impact of the collision was so huge that it took over an hour to separate the vehicles and remove the bodies from the goods vehicle, which was damaged beyond recognition.

It is a tragedy which could have been avoided.I beleive in consumer protection law,the driver of the truck carrying passengers in the truck meant to carry goods is wrong.,passengers should be travelling in a proper bus not like cargo and goods.If we as consumers don't demand proper service and if we don't write laws to protect us we are to be blammed.India is a very diversified country with different ethnic groups but I beleive in laws which protects us(the public).Again is it a very tragic incident.May god rests their souls in peace

The posts do not carry complete info. The girdirs did not fall on their own, but because of a crane. A case has been registered against the crane driver.

I was there when the girders had just fallen .Apparently the crane guy was at the wrong place and the wrong time .Also there is very less logic of the girder being caught in the hook of a crane as a crane hook is always in such a position for both front type and reverse type that when driving nothing will get stuck in it .And if it would have just collided then the girdirs would just have bent and not ripped apart. Also irony is those girders are supposed to maintain the strength of side walls (as what i know ) , and maintain rigidity so it is questionable what the delhi police is saying !

There was a series of bad accidents on (NH-7) the Toppur Ghats section towards Krishnigiri last night. The jam followed the wreckage began at 1:45 AM and traffic was inching till 4 AM.
In the first accident it seems like a Maruthi 800 from my pic. and had got mangled inside a truck. A crane extracted it out and the traffic was completely closed for another 2 KM down the road for there was another accident involving a KPN Volvo and 2 trucks. (Sorry No Pics) since we were driving on the wrong side and poor lighting conditions with rain.
The bus was badly damaged from the front and the rear. I don’t have the total tally of the injured or hopefully no one dead.

oh terrible sight and i think one wheel the LH front one is in the air,driver side roof doesnt give a good feeling at all.cant be more worse.

I was also driving from Bangalore to Chennai this morning starting by around 5AM. Saw the M800 laid on the side of the road. It was looking in real bad condition and totally crumbled. I heard from a truck driver that the driver rear ended the parked truck. Heavy rain and poor visibility probably caused this accident!

I couldnt get any information on the survivors!

OMG very horrific accident man , cant make out if its and 800 or some other car. Hopefully the passengers are safe.

It is a swift as per me.Looking at the C Pillar and also the rear door frame towards the rear is like swift (sharp slant), 800 is straight / vertical .

I saw the vehicle in clear daylight. It was a M800 crumbled beyond recognition!
