So planned route is Pune - Bhor - Varandha - Sawantwadi - Panji

Need to know road condition in Varandha ghaat and also options recommended by the team.
Want to avoid Tamhini as that has been done a lot of times.

Is amboli shutdown?

Thanks.
Amboli is open from 6am to 6pm as per updates on another thread.

Re: Pune to Goa on NH17 (Avoid Tamhini).

Any specific reason for NH17? NH4 is 4 laned and much better with multiple points where one could cross the ghats.

I came back from Dapoli recently via NH17 and Tamhini and the road was ok. This was late May.

A better (and probably faster) choice would be E-way to Khopoli and onwards to NH17 via Pen.

Re: Pune to Goa on NH17 (Avoid Tamhini).

Alternatives:

1. Pune -> Umbraj/Karad->Chiplun -> Goa

2. Pune -> Kolhapur -> Gagan Bawda -> Talere(NH17) -> Goa

Re: Pune to Goa on NH17 (Avoid Tamhini).

If not Amboli, the next best is Radhanagari option instead of Gagan Bawda.
I remember @Chevy_Lover saying the Gagan Bawda route is pretty lonely.

Re: Pune to Goa on NH17 (Avoid Tamhini).

If you want to maximise NH17, better go via Khopoli/ Pen. If you want to reduce travel time go via Karad/ Chiplun

IMHO, the title is a bit misleading; when I first saw it I thought you are recommending others to avoid Tamhini ghat due to your experience. Perhaps you may want to modify it to say something like "(except Tamhini)"

Re: Pune to Goa - advice on planned route would be appreciated

Planning to drive from Pune to Goa tomorrow (Friday) afternoon. Should I try Belguam > Anmod considering safety? I am going to Mapusa, so Sawantwadi route is better than Ponda, but dont mind taking the Belgaum one if it is safer.

Is Amboli ghat open for sure? I plan to reach Nipani around 5:30 or so. If I get late I will take Belgaum and perhaps stay overnight and drive in the morning. JFYI, I am traveling with a child.

Please advice.
Many thanks!!

As Ranjit said the info in the other thread is that Amboli Ghat is open from 6am to 6pm, so should you leave in the afternoon and even reach Nipani at 5:30 pm there's no way you can cross amboli ghat before 6 pm. Either you would have to leave earlier in the day or you will have to go via the other routes or stay at Belgaum for the night.

Why not via Radhanaari in that case? Need to note in this case one needs to get into Kolhapur and take SH to Radhanagari. Crossing Kolhapur may take some time.

If you are going to Mapusa, take the Kolhapur-Radhanagari-Phonda ghat-Phonda-Kankavli-NH17-Sawantwadi-Mapusa route. No point driving all the way to Anmod and then coming back to Mapusa.Roads are in good condition nothing to worry in terms of safety issues.

The roads are all the way very good except the spot in amboli ghat where landslide occurred in the past few days.
Check the status of amboli route on 14th aug as you are travelling on 15th on this section.

Do not take belgaum-anmod route as it is in bad condition.

The NH4A has again gone bad?

It was reported to be very good 2 weeks back, looks like the monsoons have begun to play their part yet again?

My friend [one of rajababues] visited goa travelling by belgaum-anmod route.
He reported it as bad road cursing himself travelling on this road against my advise.

Belgaum-anmod is never safe bet in terms of good road.

Re: Pune to Goa - advice on planned route would be appreciated

Hi - I'm driving down from Karjat to Goa on 6th Oct , and am trying to decide between the best route for this period. Options being:
A. the NH4 route - from Karjat on to the expressway then Pune - Kolhapur - Sankeshwar- Gadhinglaj - Ajra - Amboli - Sawantwadi and on to Goa , or
B. the NH 17 route - from Karjat to PEN - Chiplun -.....- Goa
My decision would be based on road conditions and driving comfort primarily. Appreciate advise, and if anyone has done this recently, inputs would be highly appreciated
