(EDIT: by the time I posted this, hrag has already done it !!)

Ok, let's start. I guess you know Silk Board and Hosur Road. Just keep driving straight ahead and follow the four lane.

So it's Silk Board->Electronic City junction->Attibele->Hosur (climb up the bridge)->Krishnagiri Bypass (you will get to the first toll gate before Krishnagiri. Rs.25)

On the Krishnagiri bypass you will go up one bridge, when you approach the second bridge do not climb up, take the road on the side and you will approach a junction. Take a left here.

From there just keep going straight.

** Look out for a lot of wrong side traffic** Especially early mornings and late evenings when visibility is poor. You can get anything from cycles, two wheelers to tractors and lorries. And they come on the Inner Lane !!!

You will cross 3 big bridges if I'm right before you hit the next toll gate. Rs. 35/- one way. This toll gate is before Vaniyambadi.

Vaniyambadi bypass (more bridges)->Ambur ( you will drive through the town, lot of wrong side traffic)->Pachakuppam(bypass bridge)->Pallikonda. You get to a toll gate again. Rs.40/-.

Then its Vellore. 7 or 8 bridges in the bypass. Vellore->Arcot bypass->Palar Bridge->Ranipet bypass->Wallajah bypass->Toll gate(Rs.25/-).

Kancheepuram bridge->Saint Gobain->Sriperambadur bypass->Poonamallee.

They were constructing a 5th toll gate somewhere on this stretch.. Might be open now.

So its Hosur->Krishnagiri bypass->Vaniyambadi bypass->Ambur->Vellore Bypass->Ranipet bypass->Sriperambadur bypass->Poonamalle bypass

From Poonamalle you can go straight towards Koyambedu or take a right towards Porur->Guindy. Let me know if you want more details.

Just stick to the four lane.

Absolute lack of hotels on route. Especially from Bangalore to chennai.

Hotel Renaissance - after Hosur. Rs.100/- buffet. You get continental, indian.

The only other hotel I know is between Vaniyambadi and Ambur. Read earlier post. All reliance outlets with hotels are on the other side of the road. You need to take a U turn which would appear only after 2 kms in most cases.

Just read the instructions back to front dude !!!

where are you put up in Chennai. You can take three roads or more roads out of chennai.

Take the Poonamallee Road. Chetpet->Amejikarai->Arumbakkam->Koyambedu junction->Maduravoyil->Poonamalle bypass to get to GQ.

Or Take the Vadapalani NSK Road->Valsarvakam->Porur junction (take right here)->Poonamalle and then to GQ.

Or take Mount Road->Guindy Kathipaara Junction->Porur road(its next to the airport road on the right)->MIOT Hospital->Porur junction->Ramachandra Hospital->Poonamallee.

From Poonamallee. Its the same GQ. follow the four lane. Sriperambadur byepass->Kanchipuram bypass flyover->Wallajah Toll gate->Arcot bypass->Vellore flyovers (6 or 7 of them)->Pallikonda toll gate->Ambur->Vaniyambadi bypass (with 2 bridges)->Vaniyambadi Toll gate->Natrampalli byepass->Bargur bypass->Krishnagiri junction (take right here)->Krishnagiri toll gate->Hosur flyover->Atibele->Electronic City->Silk Board.

You have Hotel highway just after you cross Poonamallee. There are a couple more of new hotels there.

You'll find a Reliance A1 plaza between Sriperambadur and Wallajah Toll gate.

Past Krishnagiri there is a decent hotel on the left side, around 6 to 10kms from toll gate.

Enjoy your drive.

There is also a Hotel Krishna Palace (?) on the LHS just as you enter Vellore. Looked like a decent place to stop when I drove by.

Its called the Old-Madras Road.Nice sweeping curves .
Best done in daytime.

From Bangalore , U go towards that Ulsoor lake and after exiting U're driving towards a town called Hoskote and from there U just keep going towards Palmaner, Chitoor and join the GQ at Ranipet(?).

Well, do you want to take this route. The roads are a little bit bad from Chittoor to Ranipet. Not upto its standards as it has rained pretty badly in that sector for sometime. Its not like its full of potholes, but its a bit rough with the top layer tar washed off in small parts

Anyways here goes.

I hope you know how to reach Old Madras Road.

Indiranagar BDA is a good reference point. That is Old Madras Road. Continue straight past Big Bazar and then up K.R.Puram bridge and down. Road takes a left in K.R.Puram.

Then its Hoskote->Kolar (bypass)-> Mulbagal(bypass)-> Palmaner-> Chittoor(bypass)-> Ranipet (take the GQ from here till Chennai.

Hoskote signal is irritating. Try to leave early and avoid the traffic there. You will have more traffic till Kolar as a lot of vehicles come towards Bangalore in the morning.

Kolar to Mulbagal is a great drive. Watch out for the curve with two speed breakers before Mulbagal. Once you cross Palmaner there is a small ghat section. Banking is bad so take care.

Once you cross Ranipet (you have to wade through the town there) there is a right which goes towards vellore. Take that right and you will hit the GQ. Take the left in the GQ towards Kancipuram & Chennai. If you miss the right you will have to go through Wallajah and finally the road will end up in GQ. Just to avoid Wallajah you should take the right.

Non stop drive from KR Puram to Ranipet will be around 3 hrs. Lot of Reliance bunks, small hotels, dhabas, trees on the road sides to park and eat if you have take food with you.

Entirely different compared to GQ.

Its a two lane so watch out. The cat's eyes are an irritation from tamil nadu border till ranipet.

Old Madras Road is in good shape. I just took this route back the day before. Prefer it to the Krishnagiri Road anyday.

I took the GQ from Chennai to Bangalore last week and took the OMR for the return trip. The OMR condition is quite bad in number of places with big pot holes.

I decided to come this way as the route is more scenic but definitely not worth it. Once I hit the GQ after Ranipet, I realized what a pleasure it was in comparison!

There is a very nice Cafe just before entering Sriperumbudur towards the Left.
Good food, nice bakery, well maintained and very clean toilets.
Makes sense to stop for breakfast while leaving Chennai.
Cant recall the name though.

Thanks for that detailed directions to Chennai. Have taken a print out of the same.
My query is: I plan to leave Saturday post lunch from Bangalore. Hit CHennai for dinner. Then leave CHennai for Bangalore after breakfast and intend to hit Blore just after lunch.

In that case can I opt for a two way ticket at the toll booth?

Is it valid for 24 hrs or validity ends at 12 midnight the same day?

Your inputs would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I am not very much sure about this road. But in most of the roads i had traveled, toll is valid for 24 hours and ends at 12 midnight on the same day.
