Hey Guys....the last update on this thread was almost a year ago so wanted to understand the current conditions of the road.

Am planning a road trip from Mumbai to the North-east sometime soon. Google maps shows the route as follows Mumbai - Nagpur - Sambalpur - Cuttack - Kharagpur- Kolkata and then onwards.

Can anyone please shed some light on route conditions and alternate route options?

very very URGENT

I need to travel to West Bengal preferably tonight. I know the road via Odisha is closed. What other viable options do I have?

I will have 2 ladies with me along with my 3+ years old daughter.

Please help, please.

I think Odissa routes should be open by tomm evening. Suggest you to cross Odissa and Bengal on Sunday.

Hope all is well. What are you driving?

If you want to avoid the coastal route to WB then the other option is to go via central India. Again there are many micro options to choose from to touch Varanasi => Kolkata National highway.

Pune Dhule Indore Bhopal Varanasi
Or
Pune Nagpur Varanasi

It's 2100 kms in total Pune to Kolkata. Would suggest to break it down to 700kms a day

With summers in full swing hope the Fani cyclone gives some cooling effects.

Never thought of taking the road to WB.

I have reached WB and came via MP. Just one word best describes the road condition. AVOID. From Sagar till Ranchi, its all in condition best suited for dumpers and likely bodies. Now while I am typing all this, I am at a service center doing a complete check up. Shall post elaborate observations post I return back to Pune.

My returning will be like last time, tested route. (WB - Orissa - Visakhapatnam - Hyderabad - Pune).

Got some updates that highway through Orissa is in good condition, but gathering more inputs still.

Did Bhilai to Jamshedpur. Bhilai to Sambalpur - 4 lanes good road.
Sambalpur to Deogarah - 4 lane road construction going on. Road not great.
Deogarh to Koenjhar - Valley road fine, but side by side construction going on.
Koenjhar to Jamshedpur - Butter smooth.

Hello everyone,

I am planning a ride with my family from Kolkata to Pune in the first week of April 2020. Before this I have done a couple of small rides, Mumbai - Shirdi (200 kms ), Mumbai - Mahabaleshwar ( 240 kms) , Kolkata - Chandipur (260 Kms ) and this trip seems to be in a different league. I could not get through any recent travelogues on this and hence reach out to the Bhpians for any advise / guidance on the following:

1. Route to be taken
Option a - to drive down the east coast till cuttack and turn to raipur, nagpur and onwards to Pune through Amravati and Aurangabad.
Option b - to drive down the east coast through Vizag onto Rajamundry, Vijaywada, Hyderabad, Solapur into Pune.
Option c - any other route that can be considered.

2. Other considerations that should be taken before such a long journey.

I will be driving a VW Polo and plan to dive around 10 hours a day - happy to close the trip in three or four days.

Any inputs even for the smaller sectors, especially on road conditions are welcome. Thanks in advance.

I have heard a few horror stories about people transiting via Odisha, entering West Bengal.

Great to know you already got the info, still am adding my bit.

I crossed Jamshola on 15th March 2020. It's all the way a 4 lane highway with sparse traffic. Earlier it used to be a nightmare, but this time I didn't even realize when I crossed the border!

What I heard from a friend is, there is a strict checking for MH and DL no vehicle's while entering WB.
Do keep all your documents and all the essential papers handy. A current date Covid19 negative report will be helpful.

Between 11th May to 15th May, one of my friend drove from Kolkata to Chennai and back in his Ecosport. He had the E-pass. During his trip he went through Odisha and while returning he came back via Odisha too.
So till 15th May, Bengal/Odisha border was operational. I do not have any updated info after 15th May.
What I feel is, if one is not going to stay in Odisha they are allowing the transit pass.
Still if you can collect any info after 15th May do try to get it.
