Hi Guys,

I am planning to go on a road trip in May

Bangalore->Dandeli->Karwar->Murdeshwara->Mangalore->Bangalore

The stretch i am most concerned is Bangalore->Dandeli->Karwar, i have never traveled around that stretch.

Can anyone please suggest which would be the best route to take and how is the road condition.

Bangalore->Dandeli, can it be made in 1 day (i don't like night driving)

There are two ways to get to Dandeli.

1. NH4. Bangalore Tumkur - Davengere- Hubli - Dahrwad - Haliyal - Dandeli
2. NH206 & SH. Bangalore - Tumkur - Shimoga - Sagar - Talguppa - Sirsi - Yellapur - Haliyal - Dandeli.

Second route is highly scenic. Road conditions decent. First route is dry but good road in most cases very good as its 4L NH4.

Dharwad-Haliyal-Dandeli is very bad. But its hardly an hours drive.

Overall if you start early morning, you should be able to make it by evening which ever route you take.

Dandeli to Karwar route goes via Anshi national park, where roads are pathetic in the ghat sections. The route is: Dandeli - Joida - Kadra - Karwar. It should be about 2-3 hour drive at most. Its one of the most scenic routes and highly enjoyable but for the road conditions.

Dharwad - Haliyal - Dandeli road is pretty good with a few twisties .Road is not very wide but traffic is low. As said by ampere the its hardly an hours drive.

My knowledge of the road status is quite-quite old.

@ Ampere, I used to ride to Dandeli very often on weekends when I was in Hubli , the road is very scenic and winding.Most of the vehicles there now are tourists heading towards Dandeli. I miss riding it :(

I used to take regular KSRTC bus to Bangalore from Kawar which used go via Kadra/Joida/Dandeli/Dharwad/Hubi/Bangalore.

Bare bone bus, no recliners over long distance! Used to be really painful. But I had no choice then. I have seen the emergence of Seabird and Sugama over the years!

Ouchh! The roads were very bad then and have been relaid recently and are now maintained.
My friends were mentioning Kadra, is it a good place ? I was told it has nice views.

Ask me ! I was there 10 years ! Terrific views. Mountains, Valleys, Bridges, Forests, Rains, Winding roads and Swirling Mists. It looked straight out of a Tolkien novel! PLUS the broken roads :D (during my times off-course).

I had to travel once in a while from Kadra to Londa to catch the Goa express ! Many a times I would not get a bus while coming back (from Londa to Kadra) and hence used to take rides in newspaper vans and through alternative routes overnight to reach home !

Let me see if I can post some snaps of the dam.
Probably will do it by the end of the day, as I need to get them from home computer.

But to visit, you need to stay in Karwar and drive here.

I need to travel to Karwar? I thought that Kadra comes before Karwar.
What route do I need to take ? Hubli - Yellapur - Kadra or Dandeli -Joida - Kadra ?

I missed riding to Kadra ,Now I am in Bangalore , don't know when I'll be able to ride the route
. Just asked a friend of mine , He had visited Kadra , said the roads are good.

From Yellapore you should go to Ankola - Karwar - Kadra. It does not make sense to go to Dandeli, if you want to just visit Kadra.

While you're in Dandeli, do check out the "Tree House" at Dandeli Jungle camp. Awesome thing for a romantic stay, if you like it that way.

Should we have a thread detailing the tourist spots in and around Dandeli?

There are many there, my fav is Sathodi falls near yellapur.

These are snaps around the Kadra dam and the Kaiga Power Station colony.

We are lanning a trip to Dandeli in first week of Nov. Which is the best route to take?

Following seems to be three options

a) Bangalore - Shiggaon - Tadas - Kalghatgi - Haliyal - Dandeli

b) Bangalore - Bankapur - Mundgod - Kalghatgi - Haliyal - Dandeli

c) Bangalore - Dharwad - Haliyal - Dandeli

I don't mind drving extra KMs if the road is good. Pls give your recommendations.

On the way back we plan to come via Sirsi - Sagara - Tirthahalli - Shimoga - Bangalore.

Any update on the road between Dandeli - Sirsi - Sagara will be helpful.
