And sorry for the back to back post. In case you miss it, dont panic. Continue further, take the next exit (Alnavar road) towards Dharwad. Get into the town and ask for Haliyal or Dandeli road.

mallumowgli : You come straight on the Hubli-Dharwar bypass, continue and cross over the Dandeli road going underneath the highway and then you find this on your right

It is a mud path, but I've seen vehicles like swift taking this stretch without any problem.

ampere : - No I think the blue is to be used for both. (Getting in and getting out)

- The bypass is not a 4-lane. Its a normal road.
I think @Ampere is correct.

It's a mud-path, and Dharwad has been seeing a lot of rains. So careful if you want to get off the highway - we dont drive tractors :)
Even otherwise, be prepared to see it blocked.
For either reason, if you find it blocked, then you would have to go to the next exit (which is probably a right exit only), & go to Alnavar - Haliyal - Dandeli.

So i managed to find the right exit as guided by ampere and mallumowgli. There was some sort of exit as shown by Google maps as in my first screenshot, but it looked achievable only using a proper 4x4. Thanks a billion again!

I'm planning to take a driving holiday from B'lore-hassan-udupi-karwar-dandeli return route would be via NH4, could anyone tell me the road conditions along the coastal highway? And is it doable is a hatchback? Also which would be the right place for a stop over? any pointers are appreciated
thx

How are the route conditions on the Bangalore-Dharwad stretch of NH-4? Is it doable in 6 hours?

Also, is Tadas-Kalghatgi-Haliyal route a viable option to avoid going all the way up to Dharwad?

- Possible (6 to 6.5 hours) with a BF break.
- Don't take Kalghatgi route. I would say Haliyal/Dandeli via the Dharwad bypass is a better option
- In case you miss that mud road exit on the bypass, its a max of 10km detour. Route Link

Hey Amp - can you please share the coordinates of the mud-road exit on Hubli-Dharwad bypass?

Here are the co-ordinates: 15.438706,74.968182

See in Google maps and turn on Satellite view. Normal view won't show it up.

^^ I remember seeing the turn off towards Dandeli marked with proper signage's on my trip to Goa on Hubli bye-pass. Also, there is a small junction ahead of the turn off, you can ask for directions in case you are doubtful.

Yes. Thats the route I meant. I think there is barricade in place such that only small vehicles can go through. Though I am not sure about it.

Suhaas, where is the Dandeli board that you saw? I dont think there is any exit for Dandeli.

Oops! Any idea if a Safari can get through?

Also, I see few other probable options to get on to Dandeli road from NH-4, as given below. Anyone tried these?

Sorry I should have clarified. By small vehicles I meant no trucks. Safari should go through I think. One more think you may want to do is when you reach the entrance of the bypass, you can check with the toll booth guy too.

No idea on that. You will need to check it out once there. That "kuchha" road is quite obvious. But you will need to slow down in that location to spot it.

@CoolDube, the first option in post #115 here would be the best bet - if it works. There is a barricade there.

The option in the upper part of the pic in #117 was used long long back - possibly when the by-pass itself was being constructed, but I dont remember it being used at all after that. Not even by bullock-carts

If you want to look for options like in #117 & #118, then you can try this point if there is a turn-off:

15.413078,74.977244

but do make sure that you can also get back on to the highway, in case the path further down the road is not passable.
