MYsore-Madikere-Bhagamandla-Panathur-Kanghagad-Payyanur
Can anyone let me know how the stretch between Bhagamandla and Kanghagad is?
i want to travel from mysore to payyanur.

Just give a comparison between this option and the option thru sullya-Jalsoor-Kasargod- payyanur
Tell me which one out of this is better.

PS: I have travelled till kasargod thru the sullya Jalsoor route.

Kannur/Kasargod via Virajpet.

Helo, What condition is the Kannur/Kasargod - Wayanad route in now? I'm looking for the best route from Kasargod to Mananthavady; is there are better route than Kasaragod -Cherkkala-Jalsoor-Sulya-Madikeri-Virajpet-Gonikoppal-Kutta-Tholpetty -Mananthavady? Do we really need to hit Coorg at all? How many kms is this route?
Thanks!

Kasaragod - Kannur - Thalassery - Kuthuparamba - Mananthavady is the best alternative

The best route from Kasaragod to Mananthavady is via Kannur - Kuthuparamba - Manathavady

Kasaragod - Kannur is 100 Km (NH 17) (Good Road)
Kannur - Kuthuparamba: 24 Km (Not bad - Expect some potholes)
Kuthuparamba - Periya: 42 Km (Forest - Ghat section)
Periya - Manathavady: 22 Km (Forest - Ghat section):
Total: 188 Kms

If one needs to avoid the Highways, there are enough connection from Kanhangad to Irrity(Nileswar - Cherupuzha - Naduvil - Irrity). I haven't taken this road yet, so no idea about the road condition. From Irritty, its via Peravur - Nedumpoyil - Perya - Manathawadi or Peravur - Kottiyur - Boy's Town - Perya - Manathawadi

Thanks
Rajesh

Latest road conditions b/w Bangalore & Kasargod

I'm planning a trip to Kasargod next weekend (9-12 Oct). Staying at Nalanda resorts, Nileshwar for 3 nights. Need some help from members who have driven on this route recently and have been at kasargod before.

1. What is the best route from B'lore to Kasargod and back?
I would be going in my Honda city (legendary low GC), hence need to know the current road conditions and plan a best available route. I had researched and found 2 routes (as below), if anyone has a better route suggestion or minor detours in the below routes, pls go ahead and let me know.

Route 1-
Bangalore (SH17) – Ramanagram – Channapatna – Maddur – Mandya (SH17) – Srirangapatna (take deviation onto Hunsur Rd without entering Mysore) - Hunsur (SH88) – Piriyapatna (SH88) – Kushalnagar (SH88) – Madikeri (SH88) – Sulya (SH88) – Mularia (left turn into SH56) – Bovikanam (straight into NH17) – Cherakala – Kasargod – Kanhangad – Nileshwar.

Route 2-
Bangalore (SH17) – Ramanagram – Channapatna – Maddur – Mandya (SH17) – Srirangapatna (take deviation onto Hunsur Rd without entering Mysore) - Hunsur (SH88) – Continue left on SH88A upto Kannur (NH17) – Taliparamba – Payyannur – Nileshwar.

(Above routes are courtesy- Mapmyindia.com).

2. What are the important sight-seeing places in and around Kasargod?
I have listed down some; mainly the Forts (Bekal, Chandragiri, Hosdurg forts) and beaches. Any other suggestions places and restuarants in this place which is a must-visit?

Please let in your suggestions in this regard.

Thanks
Nandi.

I had taken the Sulya route, 1 year back. That time stretch between Madikeri and Kerala border were not good. Later it got repaired, but again onset of heavy rains might have had impact.

Good choice, I have fond memories of the resort. You can see my travelogue.

Don't go by online maps, sometimes they mislead. This thread and the Kannur thread are the most insightful.

Some other places are backwaters (Chandragiri and Valiyaparamba), Chithari beach, forest temple in Adoor, Ananthapura temple famous for the crocodile etc.

Madikeri - Bhagamandala - Panathur - Kanhangad - Nileswar would be the shortest. But no idea about the reccent road condition. Monsoon was heavy in these hilly areas.

No need to go to Kannur, that will be much longer. Hunsur - Gonikkuppa - Makkutta - Iritty - Thalipparamba - Payyanur - Nileswaram (~360km). This will be best considering the recent rains. Roads are better and I have travelled in this route 2wks back. PM me if you need any specific information about this route. You can read the latest update at -> http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/route-...needed-38.html

Don't miss a back water boat ride. Bekal Boat Stay or Nalanda resort will able to give a good deal on this. The sea food at Nalanda is used to be very good.

Thanks
Rajesh

In fact, I also thought of doing the Iritty route (Hunsur - Iritty - Taliparamba - Payyanur - Nileshwar), but heard from a friend who traveled to Bekal in Jan 2010 that Iritty section of the road was quite broken. So, you are saying that 2 weeks back, this route was good? RajeshK, can you please confirm once more about this.

In all probability, the final route would be:
Bangalore – Srirangapatna - Hunsur (SH88) - Gonikkuppa - Makkutta - Iritty - Taliparamba - Payyanur - Nileswaram.

And RajeshK, I would surely PM you before I start so that you can give some more suggestions and fine-tune the trip. Also, back-water boat ride is definitely planned, seems like there is a "Sunset Cruise" which Nalanda resorts offer, I plan to take that too.

Thanks everyone, keep the suggestions flowing.

Gonikuppa - Makkutta road was not opened during Jan'10. It was opened on May'10 only. At present, there are bad stretches in Hunsur - Gonikuppa - Perumpadi and Makkutta Checkpost - Koottupuzha - Irritty. But still it is drivable. I have travelled in my NHC only. If you are the first timer, best to avoid Makutta stretch in nights.

I will be glad to help you in case of any issues.

Thanks
Rajesh

Thanks RajeshK, if you drove this stretch in a (2G) Honda city, then I am relieved. I also have a old generation H.City. No, not my first time, have done some before (& posted a few of them in travelogue section). I try to get as much details on route/road conditions as possible as I hate to get my car scratched from the bottom!

One more question- though the madikeri-sullya route is longer, is it better than Hunsur to Iritty road stretch? If yes, then I don't mind taking a longer route, if that prevents car "sudden-pothole-damage" per se!

thanks.

Yes, mine is 2G H City only. There are a few underbody scraping humps in KA, but not in KL. Though some of the road stretches are ruined due to heavy monsoon, but still drivable with care.

Since your destination is Nalanda resort, better is Makkutta - Iritty road. I have no recent update on Sullya road.

Thanks
Rajesh
