What ravib is saying is the maximum driving time. In ideal condition, Trichy - Tanjore will take 1 hr and Tanjore - Kumbakonam another 1 hr. Tanjore - Kumbakonam stretch is very curvy and traffic may also be high. Lot of people find it difficult and very tiring. And which town/village are you planning to go near kumbakonam?

Another thing to ensure is to cross Namakkal Thuraiyur Trichy stretch before dark. Else you can easily lose way in this sector unless you have a GPS.

Twisties on Tanjore Kumbakonam route have already been discussed enough.

also I witnessed lot of unmarked speed-breakers between TJR - KBKM last year, any updates if they are still there.

Most of the speed breakers in TN are unmarked and TJR - KBKM is no exception but it's hard to miss it in these roads as you will not be going too fast because of the twists and also be constantly on the lookout for potholes.

re: Bangalore to Kumbakonam : Route Queries

Sorry I hadn't seen this post in ages. I have two hatchbacks and from what you described, I thought it'd be best to leave my Beat D and Swift D at home and go in a hired Innova. After the trip, I realized that it was one of the best decisions I had made in a long time.
Thanks for your sound advice nevertheless!

re: Bangalore to Kumbakonam : Route Queries

I got a marriage to attend in Kumbakonam next week(Oppiliappan Temple, Thirunageswaram).

I am starting from Pollachi, and google gives me this: http://goo.gl/maps/53Hch

My queries:

1) How is the Kulithalai- Lalgudi - Thiruvaiyaru- Kumbakonam road?

2) If the above is bad, then i have to take NH209(Trichy-Tanjore), which gives me this:
http://goo.gl/maps/rKOv9

Which is the best advised route, given that the car is a Ford Ikon.

Thanks.

I would say :

Pollachi-Dharapuram-Odanchatram-Dindigul-Trichy-Tanjore-Kumbakonam

(This avoids Palani and Udumalpettai)

My take would be Pollachi-Dharapuram-Karur-Trichy-Tanjore-Kumbakonam. Route Link

Pollachi-Dharapuram-Karur will be a breeze to drive.

Amp, Pollachi-Dharapuram-Karur is totally traffic free and has very decent road surface.
As i mentioned in the other thread, Palani has a good bypass.

My return would be during the daytime, hence exploring alternative routes

Yes, the road is good with trees on either side, until we reach Karur, from where the sand mafia trucks rule the roost!

Very true. Even I like the Dharapuram Karur stretch. But my only concern was Karur-Trichy. Dont know when they would finish 4-laning of this stretch.

From what I heard last (couple of months back), Karur-Trichy stretch is very much improved and there may not be any difficulty. Also, I remember the person who updated this told that the stretch is a 2 laned highway and not 4 laned. I am searching for that update.

Thanks for inquiring Amp.
I was away from my country and my car for a while and was busy with my schedules.

It is a 2 lane. But I thought they were digging it up to convert it to a 4-lane?
When I look at Wikipedia, it only mentions that the section is question is being widened as yo mentioned.

Amp, as i said in the thread in the above link, the road is a 'wide 2 lane'.

The pain in Kulithalai-Trichy section is the broken tarmac between Jeeyapuram and Trichy. This is confirmed by another source too: http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/route-...ml#post2979610
---------------------------------------
Bhpian J.ravi mentioned about this route in one of his posts, hence my original query.

Thanks. Even I remembered vaguely about that post. Now that you mention, it comes back !

But then do you want to try it? Or drive till Kulithalai from Karur and switch banks ! Take the Musiri road to the hit GST and continue to Tanjore.
One instant advantage I can see here is, you don't need go into the city. It would almost get you to the Tanjore exit circle on GST.

The other option once you hit GST (NH45) is you can also take SH22 to Kallanai.
