The option via Nilambur is only good, if one really wants a good drive through twisty roads, look at wild life and estates. Else, it actually is tiring.
The route via CBE/Palakkad is quick and straight, which much mores options for break and more importantly at regular intervals.

I agree on the breaks part because we took quite a few! However walayar checkpost remains a gamble.

We left guruvayoor at 3pm on sunday and came via shornur, palakkad, cbe. The road till palakkad was very good and there was less traffic till walayar check post. As soon as we crossed Walayar, there was bumper to bumper for about 5-7 kms on either sides.

Rest of the drive was uneventful till just after the krishnagiri A2B where there was a huuuuge jam at about 12.15 am. I waited in that for 15 minutes and then ran out of patience.

Went over the median and took a u turn and went back to the a2b. Then proceeded towards krishnagiri and just before that took a left turn onto a narrow but well laid village road (berikai) into bagalur and took the nh207 from there to itpl. It was a long route but really dint have the patience to sit it out in the jam.

we reached home at about 2.15 am.

I sincerely think if we know how to by-pass Pollachi

Wadakancherry/Pazhyanur/Alathur/Pollachi/Palldam/Kangeyam/Perundurai/Salem/Bangalore is a very very good option. Timings will be very deterministic and also ample options for break, coupled with good roads.

hi Ampere,

Yes am aware of this route and is the preferred option bit yesterday we reached palakkad well after 5 pm and don't want to spend a long time on dividerless roads hence continued straight.
I have done pollachi route few times, as recent as 4 weeks ago. Its very quite compared to walayar.

re: Bangalore - Guruvayur : Route Queries

Any one recently done Bangalore - CBE - Palakkad - Pattambi - Guruvayur? I am planning to visit Guruvayur on 6th Sep'12. It will good if any of our friends can throw some light on the road conditions, specially after the recent spell of heavy rains. I am planning to start by 4am in the morning.

Thanks
Rajesh

Yes Sanjay. But with some difference, instead of directly to Guruvayoor, I went to Thrissur and stayed at my friend's house. From there, same day evening went to Guruvayoor and came back. The next day, I went to Vadagara via calicut for attending a marriage. The 3rd Day I reached my native at Payyanur.

Started from Bangalore by 4:45am and reached Thrissur by 2:30pm. I took The regular route via CBE up to Palakkad then to Alathur. From Alathur, I took Pazhayannur - Chelakkara route to reach Thrissur. From Avinasi till Alathur turn, the road was rough and there were big potholes at places specially after Walayar. From Thrissur to Calicut, I byepassed Kunnakulam by taking right turn and imm. left turn at Kechery to join after Perumpilavu.

I clocked my highest FE in this trip. Filled up tank at Hosur, driven for 460km and filled again at Thrissur with 23ltr petrol. FE = 20km/ltr with Full AC.

Thanks
Rajesh

re: Bangalore - Guruvayur : Route Queries

I am planning a trip to Guruvayur this month and thinking of Palakkad-Shoranur-Pattambi-Perumpilavu route. (there is a stop over at Palakkad town). I did a Kochi trip last month via Palakkad-Shoranur and the roads are excellent all the way. How about the roads beyond Pattambi towards Perumpilavu?

Rajesh, I had taken this route earlier once to Kochi (due to a road block at Kuthiran). I know it might be shorter than the above, but how are the road conditions compared to the Shoranur road?

To my knowledge it will be good.

Alternately, you can also think about Shoranur-Vadakkaancherry-Kecheri-Choondal-GVR. I did this route in May this year and it was good.

Both Pazhayannur and Ottapalam routes are in good shape-no problems.Beyond Pattambi is also ok.You should be able to do the distance in about 9-10hrs depending on your stoppage time at Palakkad.CBE Walayar is in bad shape after L&t bypass.

re: Bangalore - Guruvayur : Route Queries

All:

Planning a trip next week (20th) from Bangalore to Guruvayur.
Intend to take the major highway (thru Salem-CBE-Palakkad). Would need a stop over for a night ....
I was looking at maps.. CBE or Palakkad seems a good option, as it would be a brreak after 5 hrs from BLR. I have a Sr. Citizen who cannot sit for too long...

Any suggestions... ?

Regards,S

Palakkad - KPM regency would be a good option, if you plan to stay at Palakkad

Plenty of choices at Coimbatore - Hotel Sri Lakshmi at cross cut road will be a VFM option. For staying in CBE you may need to enter into the city

Planning to drive via Pollachi . Called up and reserved at Nivethas.
Any feedback on Walayar motels in Palakkad. If I am able to go fast, I might think of stopping over at Palakkad instead...

If I remember correctly Walayar Motels is at Walayar, not Palakkad. This would be almost 20-25 Km before Palakkad.
I would suggest you stay at Sri Chakra which is at the junction where the NH47 curves to the left to go towards Alathur/Trichur (going straight will take you inside Palakkad town).
