Will take roughly 2 hours for Nilambur->Guruvayur sector. I usually do Bangalore->Nilambur in about 6 hours + 1 hour of food break at Kamat Madhuvan just after exiting Mysore city.

But @arin as Ajit says that's the better option with good roads.
Not difficult to find directions as there are enough signboards for Manjeri and Calicut(you may follow directions for Calicut or Airport upto Manjeri, the same route being part of what is tagged as CNG, Calicut->Nilambur->Gudalur, highway which is the more popular route for buses). The best guides on the road are the usual autorikshaw drivers, cab drivers or petrol pump guys if you need to ask for directions.

The best part of this route is that it touches Malappuram which is the district HQ as well as the virtual capital of the party who has a bigger say on the roads in the state. And since heavy lorries from Karnataka, Andhra and other northern states usually take NH-212 to enter Kerala directly rather than entering Tamilnadu (touch Gudalur), this road does not have much of road-damaging heavy traffic too compared to NH-47 and NH-212.

There are other members too who had taken this route and found to be very comfortable than the Perinthalmanna route.

re: Bangalore - Guruvayur : Route Queries

Can someone update me on the updated road conditions Bengaluru- Guruvayoor on these two routes which I have short listed for my next weekend trip.
Route 1:Bengaluru-Mysore-Gudalur-Nilambur-Perinthalmanna-Pattambi-Perumbilavu-Kunnamkulam-Guruvayoor.
Route 2:Bengaluru>Mysore>Gudalur>Nilambur->Manjeri->Malappuram->Kottakkal(join NH-17)->Kuttippuram->Edappal->Kunnamkulam->Guruvayur.
Also the total distance ( expecting petrol price hike any moment ).
If the approx travel time is also available then superb. (consider 2 hrs stoppage for lunch, tea breaks & fuelling)

Choose route 2 for better road conditions and faster drive. For timings, please refer to the first post in http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/travel...guruvayur.html

re: Bangalore - Guruvayur : Route Queries

Guys,

Am planning a trip to Guruvayur via Coimbatore in the next 2 weeks from Bangalore. Would appreciate your inputs on the best route for the Coimbatore - Guruvayur leg and rough driving time.. For Blr - CBE, I will use the usual Hosur - Salem - Avinashi - CBE National Highway.

Best route from Coimbatore to GVR is the following

CBE-Walayar-Palakkad-Parli-Ottapalam-Kulappully-Pattambi-Guruvayur

CBE Palakkad 1hr 30mins
Palakkad GVR. 2hr to 2hr 30mins

once you reach palakkad follow directions for ottapalam road, well marked and straight forward while entering from Chandra Nagar/NH47.

Road conditions are good throughput except for some bad patches at walayar.

Ranjit, why don't you please mention the now-super Palakkad bye-pass and detail out the Chandranagar->Olavakkode->Mundur->Parli route? Easy to follow with good signages now and also totally avoided the crowded roads of Palakkad town, esp. the market road. Don't you think so?

Aroon, this is the option to bypass Palakkad town and directly join the Ottapalam road at Parli

https://maps.google.co.in/maps?saddr...via=2&t=m&z=14

Directions:

-Coming from CBE,at the NH47-Chandranagar junction,go straight.Left will take you to Thrissur
-After going straight towards Palakkad, you would cross the Indian Oil petrol pump on your left.Following that, take the right 4laned road. This is the bypass road connecting you straight to Olavakode
-Follow the Bypass till Olavakode and further onwards it continues as the Kozhikode highway.Follow the highway till Mundur Junction
-At Mundur junction, take a slight left towards the Cherplassery-Mundur road. The highway continues to your right
-Continue till Mundur School(to your right)and opposite the school is a road going left.Take the road, there is a milestone which reads Parli.
-Continue on the road and the road joins the Ottapalam highway near Parli railway station.
-Join the highway and take a right towards Ottapalam-Kulappully-Pattambi-Guruvayur.

This is the easiest way from Coimbatore to Guruvayur and completely bypasses the palakkad market roads.

Thanks Ranjit. I requested you to do the honours as I could detail out the route only upto Mundur junction in NH-213

BTW, regarding the 3rd step "Follow the Bypass till Olavakode", you know you have done this when the 2 landmarks are reached - first is a major junction and on the RHS, you have Palakkad main railway station just about 200 meters from the junction and IIRC, it is a building with a blend of Kerala-style architecture; and even if you miss this first one, the second one that can't be missed is the railway overbridge where if you look down to your right, you will see the Palakkad main railway station.

This is a rather circuitous route - though the bypass is now good. The better option is to

- go straight on the coimbatore - palakkad highway itself, instead of taking the Palakkad by-pass
-at Kalmandapam fork, take the left fork (straight road or rather the right fork actually will be the Palakkad-Kulappully road through the market)
-go straight past the Fort junction, SBI junction, ksrtc stand till you reach the mercy college junction
-go straight across this traffic island and then take the first right (a wide two-lane road with median) to reach the palakkad-kulappully road, without touching the market

NH 544 to Unknown road - Google Maps

There will be a slight traffic jam near KSRTC stand, but will not delay you for more than 5 minutes or so even during peak hours

re: Bangalore - Guruvayur : Route Queries

I have regularly been taking the Palakkad - Shornur - Wadakkanchery - Kecheri route. Wouldn't this be shorter for that leg of the journey?

The only hitch in terms of time that I have faced is at Kecheri junction where due to the narrow road there is always a nice traffic jam.

Both are same in distance, wadakanchery route used to take longer thanks to the railway gate. But now with the overbridge opening at Wadakancheri,it has eased things a lot.The only disadvantage with the WKI route is that one needs to know precisely well where to take the diversions and turns, whereas with the Pattambi route,it is pretty straight forward.

+1 to what Ranjit said. Its very clear in Pattambi for the route to Kunnamkulam.
One need not ask any questions. Its much simpler there compared to Wadakancheri.

re: Bangalore - Guruvayur : Route Queries

Came to guruvayur today from Bangalore. The traffic and road conditions were fine from Bangalore till kollegal via kanakpura, malavalli. We had left Bangalore at 6 am.

The number of turn left n right etc is on the higher side from this point on till our destination. And most of these turns are poorly marked unlike our GQ roads and other prominent highways.

The traffic was mildly bad from kollegal till nilambur. Saw some wild elephants at bandipur/mudumalai forest.

The roads from nilambur are quite good but the traffic was hell. If you have done the walayar palakkad highway, then you have done this road... Minus the potholes though cos the road, as I said, is quite good.

Congested road with the truck drivers, milk vans, intr city buses etc trying to bull doze you or throw of off the road... Very similar to walayar route.

The roads got wider from kottakal till just shy of guruvayur.

All in all, I am not sure if this is better than the regular Salem, cbe, walayar route. If it is, then it's only marginally better.

I reached by 4 pm due to many stoppages. We travelled by Scorpio
