Straightforward option: Bangalore Nelemangala Kunigal Bellur Cross Channarayapatna Hassan Belur Chikmagalur Mallandur Road Coffee Terrain.
To add to what Parag says, once you are on Mallandur road, you have to take a left at a fork after Jakkanahalli village. There are directions to Avathi village here and I vaguely remember the Coffee Terrain board as well.

Did Mlore - Blore via Madikeri - Mysore yesterday. Started at 4 AM and reached Blore at 11:30 AM with a short 10 min break at Sullia and 40 min breakfast break at Mysore.

Madikeri - Mysore stretch has started developing those occasional potholes. Night driving can get tricky.

There are some sections between Puttur - Sullia where the mud from those hills have spilled over to the road. This should be due to the heavy rains in the region for past few days. There are a couple of rumblers (potential suspension breakers) as well in this section that one has to be careful about.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Drove to Shirva this weekend via the Hassan-Belur-Kottigehara-Charmadi-Belthangady-Bajagoli-Karkala-Belman-Shirva route on both onwards and return journeys.

Onward journey took 9 hours and 18 mins with two 10 min breaks due to heavy rains and fog on the Charmadi ghat region. The fog and rain was so intense that vehicles were reduced to a 15 kmph crawl for almost an hour. The return trip was way faster and took 6 hours 30 mins (10 min break at Hassan) with some fast driving on the Hassan-Bangalore stretch. Roads throughout this route are good with a few bad sections on the Charmadi ghats and Belur town. Thanks to all of your for your help and input. The Brio also crossed the 20,000 kms mark during this trip.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Though not officially opened , they are letting cars and two-wheelers through on Shiradi . Yesterday , we had family members take Shiradi on their way to Puttur . Some of these stretches are manageable but narrow as there is some work going on . They reached puttur in under 6 hours including a 45 mins break in between . Having said this , they arent taking this route back

Yesterday I drove through shiradi. Although road work is complete, shoulders are not yet filled. Hence there exists a gap of almost 1 feet in the sides. Care must be taken while allowing vehicles to pass or when overtaking.

Just 1ft? The photo shows 10ft or so unfilled, is that a older photo?

From the pic in the Indian express newspaper link I shared above, does look like a 2-3 feet shoulder that is being filled by workers but the picture in @fast_elegance's post it does seem like 10 feet or so, probably an older picture

That looks like an old photo. I did not notice any shoulders that deep. I did see a lot of fill ups in upper side of the ghats. But its not advisable to get down on to it as soil is lose and slippery.

Thanks. In general, how is the state of Shiradi. Were you impressed considering the 7 months they took for it?

Yes, I am impressed by the work, except that it was not widened. One of my cousin, a civil engineer, who went for concrete work inspection on local MPs invite explained me the whole process and he said they have done a good job.
