Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

If we leave Bangalore at 1.30/2pm and drive towards Mangalore, what are some good stops for Dinner at around 7pm that are kids and ladies friendly (vegetarian-only options preferred)

A few weeks ago, we did a Manipal-Bangalore drive (left Manipal at 4pm on a Monday, reached Bangalore at 11.30pm) via karkala-belathangady-belur-hassan, the only dinner spot we could find at 730pm was Growers Coffee House https://maps.app.goo.gl/4mfKHGPX3AD82BeZA

Thanks

Looks like you are taking Charmadi route. I don't find many decent restaurant options on this route beyond Hassan from Bangalore. Ibbani cafe which is around 25 km further away from Growers Cafe towards Mudigere is a decent one. Fresh Bean cafe at Banakal seems to have been closed now.

Then I guess you will pass through Shiradi. Or will you take Bisele ghat? If you leave Bangalore by 2pm (Assuming you living 15-30 min away from Tumkur road), you should reach Hassan by 5pm, Sakleshpur by 6 pm. So, 7 pm means you will be in the Ghats, which do not have any hotels, Gundya and Shirady do not have any hotels which have clean washrooms. Kalladka has Laksmi Nivas, you may reach by 8.30-9 pm or so. So your best bet is to have an early dinner in Sakleshpur. I prefer Oosur (https://maps.app.goo.gl/P4HdgzhXA1N4KSaa8). You can also try Surabhi (https://maps.app.goo.gl/izqBeWk3oJt3gVTGA).

Since many are avoiding Shiradi route nowadays, have no idea how the restaurant food will be since the items may be slow moving. Look at the crowd and stick to safer food in case of less footfall.

Happy driving!

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Drove from Bangalore to Mangalore via Mysore Madikeri and returned via Uppinangadi - Sakaleshpura - Bangalore

Nothing much to write about Mysore Madikeri highway. Roads have received fresh coat of tar from Madikeri to Sampaje.

Mani onwards the road widening is in progress and passing Kalladka is still a mess.

Mani to Gundya road work is in progress and it is a mess with diversions and dust. Though any car can traverse through this section without getting the underbody hit, the dust makes it very difficult to drive.

On 3rd March left Mangalore at 11:00 pm and was accompanied by sea of busses heading towards Bangalore. Until Gundya it was dusty and post that smooth drive.

The Sakaleshpura bypass is not officially open but I did take it and it was breeze to pass through and join the highway near hotel Ossur.

Post that road work is almost complete barring two three diversions which doesn't affect much.

Particularly this time I was driving a 2014 Thar and enjoyed the bad sections to the fullest.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hello members,
I did Bangalore-Ujire-Mangalore yesterday. Initially had planned to come using MYS-Madikeri route, while leaving my parents wanted to visit a temple in Ujire & had to take this route. The roads from Bangalore-Hassan-Belur-Mudigere is amazing. Up till Ujire it was manageable & there are few road works going on in Charmadi Ghat. From Ujire-Mangalore it was nothing short of ladakh roads. It is definitely difficult for cars with skinny tyre profiles. Suggest members to use this roads with caution.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Hello All,

Drove yesterday via Hassana>Sakhlesh Pur> Ghat Road>Mangalore. Most of the stretch after ghat road till before you catch up good road for Mangalore is essentially a mud road with all the construction activities going on.

Nay suggestion while returning back should I take via Mysore would that be better, please let me know if anyone has recently drove that way from Udupi.

P.S. Govt ought to think to have at least one drive able road ready first even if there is major repairs or construction going on. Can't make it all such a mess till everything is ready.

Thanks

Ujire via Dharmastala is a good option. I did it last month and found it motorable in my sedan.

I have not seen many discuss the Shiradi Tunnel road project. Seems like its govt has approved and DPR seems ready. Am just thinking is this some thing in a good direction especially given it rains so much in this region?

Based on my experience, I would suggest you to take Charmadi route as both Shiradi and Madikeri routes were tough compared to this route.

If you are leaving from Udupi, take Agumbe. My cousins from Udupi take that way when they come to Bangalore. If I am not mistaken, entry to Agumbe is allowed only during day. After sunset till sunrise vehicles are not allowed. Not sure if they have changed it now.

That’s a 2+ year old news article.
The Shiradi and tunnel project and 4 laning has been mentioned in forum posts (probably this thread even) few times, but there hasn’t been much progress on the ground, I think though there is some recent work in progress on the road widening around Sakleshpura that I’ve read about in some posts.

Somehow infrastructure projects in Karnataka seem to get stuck forever regardless of which party governs, due to complete lack of will and determination.

My only hope is the that the centre will take up these initiatives on a war footing and see it to completion quickly maybe as part of Bharatmala project etc so that funding doesn’t hamper them, just like how the STRR was taken to fruition in few years.

I second this!

I just went to Kundapura over the weekend and returned y'day. Took Hassan - Belur - Chikmagalur - Aldur - Agumbe - Halady route and same for return!

started from Kundapura by 8:30 & stopped by Hassan Ringroad exactly at 1:00 pm (with 1 stop to buy some fresh veggies, 1 stop to lock in a rogue water bottle that was dancing in the boot) & 1 stop at Bhadra Cafe).

Could've been earlier if I had not missed a turn.

Such a pleasant/peaceful drive!

If I have to do Mangalore next, I guess I shall take this route and do the extra kundapura Mangalore stretch than struggle with the road construction etc on both Shiradi & Charmadi routes.

No, Agumbe is open 24/7.

Bangalore - Hassan - Chikmagalur - Balehonnur - Hariharpura - Agumbe - Kota is my usual route to my native since a decade now. I leave Bangalore by 4PM - 5PM and usually end up at Agumbe around midnight. Never did I find it closed.

If anyone wants to avoid this curvy route may take Bangalore - Tumkur - Hiriyur - Tharikere - Theerthahalli - Agumbe route which has less curves. (Better option if aged passengers are at back seat).
