Kindly let me know the colour of choice indicated in the below pic - brown/purple/black (time = between 10am and 12noon)
I have used the brown route once as google promotes this. I did not like it, lot of city traffic and many speed breakers.

I am used to the black route and still use it. For a low GC car, there are two nasty/weird speed breakers to watch out for around the railway crossing (small stretch once you exit highway). Rest of the route should be okay.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Road update : For someone travelling via Charmadi, please note that road widening has started from Kakkinje onwards and traffic is allowed only on one side leading to massive traffic jams.

My cousin left to Mangalore yesterday from Bangalore via Charmadi and he was stuck for good 1 hour from Kakkinje to Ujire.

Guess the only quicker option to reach Mangalore is via Mysore - Madikeri as Shiradi is also work in progress.

Experts, below pic is from a short while ago, 7:20pm on a Tuesday. What clue does this provide, in terms of getting stuck on the eve of Republic day long-weekend ?

Be rest assured that there will be massive jams from Ujire onwards as you will encounter Dharmasthala pilgrims as well.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Planning to travel to Udupi from Chennai on 26th January, 2024. Any update on the following routes:

1. Hassan-Belur-Mudigere-Charmadi-Karkala
2. Hassan-Sakleshpura-Shiradi

Which route is suggested by our group members based on the recent developments?

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

I took Shiradi-Dharmastala-Bajagoli-Belman route to Udupi yesterday. There are repairs going on in the damaged section in the non-concrete section of Shiradi. Otherwise, nothing new to report.

Slight detour planned in the route now. I need to go to Surathkal to visit a relative before reaching Udupi and hence, I think I would be taking the route via Shiradi-Uppinangady. Any suggestions?

No, the construction beyond the Dharmastala turn is very bad. I suggest you take Bajagoli-Karkala-Padubidri route to reach Suratkal.

Having taken Bangalore-Mysore-Madikeri and Mangalore-Madikeri separately, I think the combined route could also be considered for Bangalore-Suratkal. Google Maps says this route is about 50 km longer but takes only ~30 minutes more.

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

I am planning to go to Udupi from Bangalore and will take the Mysore route based on recommendations made above.

Are there are any good lunch places (seafood preferably) at the outskirts of Mangalore without getting into the city bustle?

Hotel Sadanand or Suraj International, bang on the Highway, near Suratkal.

NICE Road is a complete chock-a-block now till Mysore Road exit. Please plan accordingly.

Just to be clear, the Mysore suggestion was (a) for Mangalore/Suratkal and not for Udupi, and (b) it was a suggestion not a recommendation.

For Udupi I take Nelamangala > Hassan > Sakleshpura > Gundya > Dharmasthala > Ujire > Belthangadi > Bajagoli > Nitte > Padubidri (Bajagoli > Karkala > Hiriyadka for Manipal).

What is the reason to prefer this over Haasan > Belur > Mudigere > Charmadi > Ujre ?
(I've not explored this, but Mudigere route is what google suggests, hence the query.)

Re: The art of travelling between Bangalore - Mangalore/Udupi

Did BLR-MLR through Mysore - Madikeri yesterday (Saturday). The road conditions are excellent all the way until Mani. Mani - B.C road is broken but manageable. I started at 10AM from Bannerghatta road (near Meenakshi mall) and reached Mangalore (Pumpwell) at 6PM. This is with 2 breaks i.e. Lunch near Madikeri and Coffee near Sullia.

Bangalore to Mysore is a breeze now. Kushalnagar to Madikeri had heavy traffic mostly due to long weekend visitors. Planning to stick to this route going forward until the other routes get better.
