OT question:
In one of the pics, there is a satellite TV dish. How does it work? Does it work only when stationary or is there some sort of a satellite tracking rotating thingamabob to keep it pointed at the correct position when the ship moves?

When we are coasting (up to 25-30 nautical miles from land), it receives good signal. Although, sometimes picture quality may not be as clear as in our homes.

There is a device called 'Direction finder'. Size of a router. It can be connected to Dish TV. Then, even when the ship changes its course (makes a turn), the device automatically makes the dish align in the direction of signal and thus we get continuous signal, irrespective of whichever way the ship turns.

Similarly, there is 'Signal finder', purpose of which is obvious. Better the signal, better is the picture quality.

But these days rarely one watches Dish tv onboard. Most of the people are already too busy with their work to sit in lounge and watch tv. Secondly, with internet onboard and limited free time, dish tv takes a backseat.

Exception is IPL season

Hello fellow sailors! I'm Capt.Arun and I've just joined aboard team bhp as a cadet and hoping to get to know the ropes.
Sailing as a master on parcel chemical tankers and now presently at sea.
Tough times with the pandemic affecting normal crew changes and commercial operations has made life onboard more stressful than it already is.
Nice to know that a healthy chunk of like minded petrolhead seafarers exist in this forum

A small hyperlapse video of my Panama canal transit in 2019.

I was on the navigational bridge for most of the time, so shot it with my cell phone.

Look at the video carefully and see how the ships move up and down, as water is pumped into the locks.

There are also small motors called locomotives which assist the ships to move ahead and stop in time.

Enjoy the video.

Thanks, unbelievable precision. Simply mind boggling to manoeuver a 250 metre, 200,000 tonne behemoth to a tolerance in centimetres.

Q. When the ship is at sea do you walk the huge deck for work or is that whole space unmanned. In case you are interested for avians like me - no we don't walk the fuselage or the wings when the machine is in the air.

Thanks.

At sea, the deck crew is always at maintenance on deck and the engine crew inside the engine room.
As a Captain, my job is more of administrative type and of course, rounds have to be taken everywhere, to ensure everything is in order.

Master, I notice barbed wire on your port side - piracy protection?

That's true. Besides the Gulf of Aden, certain parts of the Indonesian coast are considered as High Risk Areas and is therefore a pre-requisite to have barbed wire rigged on either side while transiting such regions.

This picture was taken at Lahad Datu, a port in Malaysia prior loading various organic palm oil grades for Europe.

Lahad Datu in itself is a quaint little town with pristine waters and pleasant climate all year round. POIC(Palm oil industrial cluster) of Malaysia has huge palm refineries setup in and around Lahad Datu making it a primary palm oil exporting port facility.

I hope Capt Arun doesn't mind me answering this one.

Yes the barbed wire is an anti piracy measure.

It's however done on the entire periphery of the vessel. Looks like the picture was taken during the process of installing or removing the barb wire.

Here's one from a year ago at Nantong, China during the retrofitting of the exhaust gas scrubber system.

This picture was taken while the vessel was in the dry dock, sitting on the blocks post hull painting and just a day before refloating.
