Although Michael Schumacher’s manager Sabine Kehm issued a statement on Friday saying simply that “Michael is still in the wake-up phrase. The situation has not changed,” the Gazzetta dello Sport’s Pino Allievi has written that the German is now breathing by himself without a respirator and doctors believe that he is hearing the voices of his friends, among them FIA president Jean Todt and Ross Brawn.

Michael Schumacher’s condition is improving by the day; a new report suggests he is breathing without the help of a respirator. It has been a whole of nine weeks since the Formula One legend met with an accident and since then has been in a critical state.

There sometimes are small, encouraging signs, but we also know that this is the time to be very patient.”

On Friday, the popular German magazine, Bunte, which specialises in celebrity news, reported that Schumacher had been moved from the intensive care unit at the Grenoble hospital to a rehabilitation ward.

The magazine said the driver was "out of danger" but said his chances of making a full recovery appeared to have diminished. It also reported that preparations for Schumacher's transfer to a specialised rehabilitation clinic were under way at the Grenoble hospital.
