You know what, I actually did some calculations on the fly, and the difference between the NRRs of the teams is so miniscule that Pak could still be out

If WI can get their NRR 'significantly' higher than Pak, then Pak has no choice of losing and getting through.

Example, WI chase down a total of 180 in 35 overs (most likely), Pak would need to win to qualify. If WI win after 37 overs, Pak can still lose and qualify.

If someone else can do more detailed check - the number of overs might change, but there will be a cut off point - I recon it would be around 30-35 overs for WI (which they should get).

But my point is most likely Pak would beat Ireland and go through and WI would beat UAE comprehensively and go through.

Re: Cricket: The World Cup 2015 Thread

Pakistan - Ireland being the last group stage match, both the teams will know what they have to do exactly in order to qualify.

Ireland's NRR being low, they will need a victory and nothing less.

Pakistan has a chance to qualify even if they lose but maintain better run rate than West Indies

West Indies if wins with bigger margin against UAE (so as to get their NRR above Pakistan), will be safe and will not be bothered about Pak - Ireland match. Otherwise they will have to hope for Pakistan victory.

India must pray that in pool B, Bangladesh doesn't surprise New Zealand in their last match. India will have to play against Sri Lanka in QF in that case.

You guys are missing an important factor. As of right now, there's 40% chance of rain on WI vs UAE match day.

If that game is washed out, Pakistan and Ireland both go through to QFs.

Both matches are on the same day, though WI Vs UAE will start before and end before. Ideally all 3 - WI, Pak & Ireland would like to chase, so they exactly know what to do.

As I said, if WI win in about 35 overs (which they should), Pak would need to beat Ireland.

I would not worry too much about that, neither will the team. You should be able to beat anyone to be a World Champion, though it won't hurt to have Bangladesh playing against us

If if it rains, there would still be enough time for a 20 over game - but it would hurt WI NRRs.

My most likely result is still Pak beating Ireland, finishing up 3rd and WI beating UAE finishing 4th.

Re: Cricket: The World Cup 2015 Thread

Was catching the Srilanka-Scotland highlights yesterday.

- Sangakkara has already broken a record with most centuries in a world cup tournament (4) beating Mark Waugh, Hayden and Ganguly (3). He is currently at 496 runs. If SL manages to reach the finals, Sachin's record of 673 runs might be beaten if he hits 178 runs which is possible. Sangakkara also holds the record for most consecutive centuries in one tournament. If he manages to hit 3 more 50s, he will equal Sachin's record of 96 in ODI career! Damn.

- Yesterday, Sangakkara called for a review of a ball which most hoped was a bouncer/wide that the batsman tried hitting and Sangakkara caught it. And guess what! The snickometer recorded a sound, the umpire apologised and gave it an out. The batsman got a shock of his life and walked out.

- Looks like the audience is still trying to catch the six one-handed! NZ is giving away some rewards for it apparently.

- Has a six ever hit that Sonata parked in the stadium? Just wondering.

Sangakkara is actually the only player to score 4 consecutive hundreds in ODIs.

A beer company is giving out $1m to people who catch the ball "cleanly one-handed" if NZ win the WC. The money will be divided among all the catchers

Seems like another tight match is underway between Bangladesh and New Zealand! An India Sri-Lanka encounter in the QF could potentially be disastrous for India. But on the other hand, Bangladesh also seems to be a tough opponent! Having luck played on their side with their abandoned match against Australia!

Oh my! If Bangladesh wins this match, won't we stand to face Australia in the QF?

Agreed that B'desh would be preferable opponent, but if India has to win the cup, they will have to beat Australia at some stage. If not Australia, then beat someone who beats Australia, which is again as good as beating Australia.

We will have to give it to them. They are playing like a deserving Q.finalist. NZ is 5 down now and in some trouble. B'desh has already made India pack its bag home in 2007 WC. Wish it is 'mauka' for Indian team to return the favor!

Re: Cricket: The World Cup 2015 Thread

Really finding funny the last few posts.
This (BAN-NZ) match is inconsequential but if someone finds it an excuse for India's exit (if it happens) from the WC then I am sorry to say Team India or any team (for that matter) deserves to lose the WC.
This match will again help NZ in good way, whatever be the outcome.

I agree, India (since it is the case of point) has to beat Australia and/or NZ in their native conditions at the business end of the tournament to lift the cup.
--
While all this while Baz and Kane had been regarded as the backbone of Kiwi batting. Its good to see Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor (who I thought were the weak links in the batting lineup) step up to the occasion.
--
Its funny to see excuses for Poms debacle in CWC15 Am looking forward to see some series on Sky UK just to enjoy some whining.

Re: Cricket: The World Cup 2015 Thread

Sorry to say but you are getting it all wrong.
India was not knocked out by BAN in WC2007 but it was SL who really knocked us out in the last league match which we had to win.
As far as revenge goes, we took it in the opening match of the WC2011 against BAN on their home ground.
WRT to actual revenge against SL for the debacle in WC2007, what better result you want than defeating them in 2011WC Final.
So beware, now its their (BAN and SL and incl PAK too) turn to seek revenge against India. It is theoretically possible fo India to meet BAN in QF, PAK in SF and SL in Finals.
I guess I have scared everyone enough.
